available i.e. for Cathodic Protection Systems))

 Digital outputs: Dry contact, solid state relay.

Additional analogue and digital IOs can be achieved with add on IO modules.

Modbus RTU on RS-485

Modbus RTU is an open, serial (RS-232 or RS-485) protocol based on master/slave or client/server
architecture. The protocol interconnects field equipment such as sensors, actuators, and controllers
and is widely used in both process and manufacturing automation. The fieldbus environment is the
base level group of digital networks in the hierarchy of plant networks.

Hawkeye has a built in Modbus slave stack implementation. Any standard Modbus master device
can connect Hawkeye Modbus using RS-485 port.

Mono-Transmitters
The Zencus Mono-Transmitter design integrates a precision sensor, 434MHz radio transmitter and
battery in a single compact unit. The design is light but robust and can screw directly into existing
connections with no support structure, cables or conduit required.

The Mono-Transmitter can transmit up to 200m or up to 3km with Repeaters and with typical
transmission frequencies between 10 and 60 seconds the Mono-Transmitter has a battery life of
between 2 and 10 years, respectively.

The Zencus Mono-Transmitter forms part of the Zencus Wireless Network, with up to 200 Mono-
Transmitters feeding into a single Hawkeye, Field Transceiver or Gateway for onward data
transmission. Data delivery is via the Zencus Data Visualization Suite or directly into the clients
existing SCADA system.

Zencus Mono Transmitters can be supplied with a variety of sensor options and ranges, e.g.
pressure, temperature, differential pressure, pulse-count, etc.

Refer to the Mono-Transmitter User Manual for further details regarding installing, removing and
powering the Mono Transmitter on or off.

onto a mounting pole.

Universal Channel Clamps are

supplied for securing Hawkeye unit
with or without mounting structure
to a 2”-3” pole.

For most installations the Hawkeye will require a GPS antenna in addition if wireless instruments are
present a receiving antenna will be supplied.

Connecting the AC power

 AC mains connects to the bottom terminals of the double-pole MCB.
 Live is intended to be on the left and Neutral on the right.
 Connect also a protective earth; this goes to the green/yellow dinrail terminal. The terminal
connects directly to the dinrail and in addition there is a factory-fitted cable to the main
mounting plate.

Cable conductor Function Termination

Incoming mains live (phase) Live 90 – 264V AC Left side of MCB
Incoming mains neutral Neutral Right side of MCB
Incoming earth Protective Earth / Ground Green/yellow dinrail terminal

The TDK SMPSU has a wide range of acceptable AC supply voltages, from 90 up to 264 V, 47 – 63 Hz.

DC fuse
There is a dinrail-mounted fuse holder to the left of the SMPSU. This prevents overcurrent in the DC
drawn from the SMPSU, and the fuse fitted is normally 3.15 or 4.0A. The fuse needs to be present
and good. If it is not, the system will run down its battery.

There is no visual indication of good DC to the board or of correct battery charging – if you suspect a
problem you may check that the (glass) fuse looks good or test voltages to show that DC power is
going in at the green PCB terminals, or test that the battery voltage is gradually climbing after first
application of mains power.

Connecting the internal battery

A pair of single wires with prepared crimped ends has been provided for this.

The cable is factory-fitted but normally left unconnected at the battery for shipping.

Cable conductor Function Battery termination

Black 0 V ground Negative
Red +12 V Positive (red surround in
battery top)

Connecting the 434MHz antenna

The antenna has an N-type connector at its base. If it is a small (20cm) flexible antenna, and its
connector is the right gender, it may be connected directly onto the bulkhead connector on the top
of the Hawkeye box.

Optionally an extension RF cable is used to extend the N-type connection to a different location
(usually further up a mounting pole) at which the antenna is mounted.

Connecting the GPS antenna

The GPS antenna has an SMA connector that must be screwed onto the SMA bulkhead jack on the
top of the Hawkeye box. Arrangements should be made to mount the antenna where it has a good
view of most of the sky.

Connecting RS-485
 Terminals for RS-485 are located at the top of the main Hawkeye PCB.
 Take care not to apply too much force to the terminals with the screwdriver.

Connecting analogue input 4-20mA signals

 The four 4-20mA input channels are connected in the field by means of the double-deck,
dinrail-mounted terminals.
 The channels each include (nominal 24 V) loop power.
 The internal arrangement of each individual channel is as follows:

Figure 2: PCB Terminals

Wiring up Pulse Transmitter

Instruments are supplied with an external wiring cable and M20 threaded adaptor with M20 lock nut
to mount and secure the Mono-transmitter.
There are 3 external cables (Red, Blue and Green) used to connect the Mono Transmitter directly to
a pulse generating flow meter, or junction box connected to the pulse generating flow meter.

Example: Connecting to Cameron flow meter

1. Red - common to both types of Cameron flow meter

2. Blue - used in conjunction with red (1. above) to connect to a Cameron MCII flow meter
3. Green - used in conjunction with red (1. above) to connect to a Cameron MCIII flow meter

For more details, please refer to Mono-Transmitter User Manual.

Switching on and power initialisation

Switching on Mono-Transmitters
Instruments are normally supplied turned ‘Off’. Pairs of magnets have been supplied with the
equipment to activate the magnetic ‘On’ & ‘Off’ reed switch which is built into the radio transmitter.

Figure 3: Zencus Mono-Transmitter

1. Remove the grey blanking plug from the Mono Transmitter using a flat head Screw driver.
Removing the grey blanking plug is not always necessary, i.e. you can place the magnet/ pair of
magnets, against the grey blanking plug and in most cases this will turn the MT ‘On’ and ‘Off’.

Figure 4: Remove grey plug

2. If the grey blanking plug has been removed, insert the cylindrical shaped magnet into the hole in
the stainless steel mono transmitter enclosure and touch the magnet against the black casing of
the radio transmitter inside.

Figure 5: Switching on/off Mono-Transmitter

3. To turn the instrument ‘On’, hold the magnet in place for 5 to 6 seconds for instruments designed
to transmit every 30 seconds. Then remove the magnet(s). Temperature instruments can take a

Real Time Solutions

few seconds to transmit after turning them on. Pressure instruments usually transmit
immediately after they are turned on.
4. To turn the instrument ‘Off’, hold the magnet in place for approx. 20 to 25 seconds. Then remove
the magnet / magnets.
5. Very occasionally, instruments can be a little temperamental to turn on. Particularly if you are
turning them ‘On’ and ‘Off’ frequently over a short period of time.

If an instrument continues to prove difficult to turn on, repeat the turn off sequence with the
magnet for 20 to 25 seconds, even though the instrument appears not to be transmitting. Leave
the instrument for a few minutes and the attempt to turn it back on again holding the magnet in
place for 5 to 6 seconds if 30 second transmission rate.

6. Occasionally using the two magnets in line helps the process.

Switching on Hawkeye
The system will operate normally from a fully charged internal battery, for a period of time. The
built-in battery is not intended to be the primary source of power.

AC mains must be connected and switched on at the MCB to enable charging of the battery. An LED
on the SMPSU shows that an AC main is present and working.

There are two stages of DC power switching and both need to be turned on to make the Hawkeye
system power up.

The ‘hard’ DC power switch

There is a small sliding power switch on the main Hawkeye PCB. This needs to be slid into the ‘on’
position. (Towards the middle of the board) It is now possible for the system to power up, at the
command of the RTC power controller.

The ‘soft’ power switch

The RTC power controller board has three small push-buttons. After the 12 V DC supply from the
battery (and mains) has been established, the ‘on’ pushbutton must be pressed. This initialises the
RTC power controller into its active state. There is a small green LED on the RTC power controller
that lights up (dimly) when it is in its active state. There should also be visible activity (red LED, LCD
display) on the red microcontroller board of the Hawkeye system, providing its slide switch is already
turned on.

It doesn’t actually matter in which order you set these two power switches, but by first turning on
the Hawkeye’s mechanical slide switch, you will then get a good clear indication that the system is
active when you initialise the RTC power controller.

Operation
Hawkeye displays its progress or state of operation on the built-in LCD screen. Messages displayed
on the LCD are quite helpful in checking the status, checking the values of transmitters and for
diagnosing any problem.

Once Hawkeye is configured and switch on, it will perform series for steps for initialisation and
normal operation briefly explained below:

Starting up Hawkeye
When Hawkeye is powered up, it first loads the configuration files from
SD card. If there is no SD card present or SD card is empty, Hawkeye will
restart itself every 10 seconds until it’s able to read the configurations
successfully.

Figure 8: Start up Screen

Initialisation
Once the configurations are loaded, Hawkeye will check the battery
voltage first and compare it with BATTERY MIN DEADBAND (specified in
General.txt). If battery voltage is below deadband, Hawkeye will shut
down for POWER SAVE DURATION (specified in General.txt). This will
protect the battery from being damaged. LOW VOLTAGE DISCONNECT
must be set to ‘1’ in General.txt for this feature.
Figure 9: Initialisation
If battery voltage was greater than deadband, Hawkeye will synchronise
internal and external RTCs with GPS time (UTC). This should take few
seconds to maximum of 10 minutes.

Reading Instruments
Once the RTCs are synchronised, Hawkeye will switch on the analogue
instruments and wait for AI_STABILITY_PERIOD (specified in
General.txt) for the instruments to switch on and stabilise. After
stabilising the instruments, instruments specified in inst.txt will be read.
Hawkeye will receive Mono-transmitter values automatically every 30-
40 seconds. Values of all instruments will be displayed on LCD screen as
shown in the picture. Once the readings are displayed on the screen, Figure 10: Displaying Readings
they will be saved in a data log file on the SD card.

Please note
Instrument 01 is the battery voltage,
Instrument 02 is Aux Power (Solar) and
Instrument 03 is the internal temperature of the Hawkeye.
