DISCUSSION
History of Badminton
Badminton began in India as a game called poona.
Poona evolved from a children’s play called battledore and shuttlecock
The shuttle was then called a bird because it was made from goose feathers.
In the 5th century in China, a sport known as ti jian zi was played by kicking a
shuttlecock up in the air.
In Europe, a sport known as jeu de volant was played with the use of
secondhand rackets rather than bare feet to kick the shuttle upward.

Court – Badminton court may be set outdoors or indoors. But competitive badminton is
usually played indoors so the wind will not affect the flight of the shuttlecock. The
standard badminton court is 6 m wide to hold a doubles game. The singles court is at
least 5 m wide. The length should at least 13.4 m (44ft).
Posts and net – the posts should stand on the doubles sidelines and are 1.55 m in the
height. The net should be strained tightly with a height of 1.54 m from the floor in the
center and a width of 0.76 m.
Basic Skills
Grip – this is how the player hold the racket.
Kinds of Grip
a. Forehand – it is a handshake grip. This grip can be likened to handshaking
somebody’s hand when holding the racket
b. Backhand – its use depends on the type of shot to be executed. This grip type is
the most common grip.
Stroke – this means to propel with a controlled swinging blow.
a. Forehand stroke – this executed on either side of your body. If you are right
handed, you perform it in a right side. The same goes with your left side.
b. Backhand stroke – this is executed on the opposite side of your body. You use
your left side if you are right handed. The same goes for the right side.
Service – this is executed to start the game. The serve is considered in when the
shuttle is inside the receiving area. It is out when it is outside the receiving area. The
receiving area is the box diagonally opposite and across the server.
