This module is especially designed for you so that you can earn proficiency in
understanding the square root of a number. This will surely serve as a tool for you to
develop deeper understanding on radical numbers and how it differs from whole
numbers, fractions, or decimals. This will also help you estimates the square root of a
whole number to the nearest hundredth and plots irrational numbers (up to square
roots) on a number line .

The module is divided into two lessons, namely:


● Lesson 1 – Estimating the square roots of a whole number to the nearest
hundredth
● Lesson 2 – Plotting Irrational numbers (up to the square roots) on a number line

After going through this module, you are expected to:

1. Estimate the square root of a whole number that is not a perfect square to
the nearest hundredths
2. Plot irrational numbers (up to the square roots) on a number line.
3. Practice tasks and perform well to attain better results.

As discussed in the previous module, there are numbers that has no exact
rational square roots and they are considered as irrational numbers. Now, you will be
able to estimate the square root of a whole number to the nearest hundredths.

What if you are asked to get the square root of 5? Can you think of a rational
number which is when multiplied to itself will be equal to 5? Can you give the
estimate of √5 to the nearest hundredth?

Here are the steps on how to get the estimate value of a square root of a
whole number .

Example 1: Estimate √𝟓 to the nearest hundredth.

Solution: √𝟓 is between √𝟒 and √𝟗

STEP 1. Find the square root of the highest radicand.

√𝟒 < √𝟓 < √𝟗

STEP 2. Divide the given radicand by the result of step 1.

STEP 1. Find the square root of the highest radicand.

Irrational numbers are those which cannot be expressed in fractional form. They are
neither terminate nor do they repeat. They are also known as non-terminating non-
repeating numbers.

Together, the rational and irrational numbers make up the set of real numbers. Plotting
