GED 101 - Understanding the Self

1. Among the following perspective of self (physical, sexual, material, political, digital and spiritual)
which do you think plays a major role in your identity as an individual?
According to William James, the material self pertains to the objects, places, or even people
which have the label “mine” and I think this perspective of self plays a major role in my identity as an
individual. We tend to see our identity through our position in society, our friends and family, the needs
and desires of our body, and the emotional and intellectual expressions of our mind. Being confident
enough to make changes comes from having clarity about who you are and what you desire.

2. Among the following perspective of self (physical, sexual, material, political, digital and spiritual)
which do you think plays the least role in your identity as an individual?
Sexual self focuses on our sexual health, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression and
values around sexuality. For me, this perspective of self plays the least role in my identity as an individual
because I think I am not yet at the right age and time to experience these things. I am more focused on my
study now, and I am afraid of getting sexually transmitted diseases like those infections with the human
immunodeficiency virus (HIV), sexually transmitted infections (STIs), and reproductive tract infections
(RTIs) and their adverse outcomes (such as cancer and infertility).

3. How does your understanding of self change after knowing the different perspective of self?
After knowing the different perspective of self, it helps me to know more about myself and
distinguish my abilities and skills. It helps me to become a better person and improve my personality in
some perspectives. Also, it allows me to understand different situations and use many parts of my
personality to create positive and effective relationships from multiple perspectives.

4. Which is your most significant learning so far with regards to the different perspective of self and why?
Digital Self is the most significant learning with regards to the different perspective of self
because I feel more freer and confident on social media, but sometimes being more exposed to it has a
negative impact on me. Having such a different persona doesn’t mean that you are being a two-faced
person, it only means that you can be more than what you think you are. The digital world is a place
where you can learn things, explore and improve yourself and you can apply this in real life.
