Using pattern blocks is a simple way to compare fractions visually. The yellow hexagon represents 1 whole unit, so the green triangle represents 1/6 of the yellow hexagon. Students are asked to use different colored pattern blocks - green, red, blue - to represent fractions and compare which fraction is greater, such as whether 1/6 (green) or 1/4 (blue) is a larger portion of the whole (yellow hexagon).

Comparing Fractions Using Pattern Blocks

Using pattern blocks is a simple way of comparing fractions. We are going to
let the yellow hexagon pattern block represent 1 whole. That means that the green pattern block is 1/6 of the yellow block. 1. Use the yellow, red, blue and green pattern blocks to compare each fraction. 2. If the yellow block is 1 unit then what fraction is represented by the blue block? 3. If the yellow block is 1 unit, then what fraction is represented by the red block? 4. Underline the fraction in each pair that is greater.
