Write-up form
Write down the energy content in kilo-calories (kcal) from one gram of fat, one gram of
carbohydrate and one gram of protein obtained by complete combustion in calorimeter (obtained in
your experiment) and by completely broken down in human body in the following table. Please
give references.
Energy Content (in kcal)
Complete combustion in * Completely broken down in
calorimeter body
1 g of Fat
1 g of Protein
1 g of Carbohydrate
1 g of Mixed Food -
Questions:
1. Explain the differences between the energy content of one gram of fat, one gram of
carbohydrate as well as one gram of protein obtained by complete combustion in
calorimeter and by completely broken down in human body.

2. What is calorimeter constant and what effect on the calorimeter constant would be
observed if the calorimeter cup were made of a plastic foam rather than metal?
If the calorimeter cup were made of metal then calorimeter constant would be significantly larger
than the calorimeter constant of the Styrofoam cup. This occurs because metals absorb heat
better than plastic foam. If the reaction occurred in a metal calorimeter the temperature change
would be lower because the metal absorbs some of the heat from the reaction. Since the
temperature is directly related to the calorimeter constant, the calorimeter constant increases
