SCHOOL BASED ASSESSMENT

DESCRIPTION OF THE PROJECT

ANGELS BOUTIQUE is a prominent clothing business in Kingston, Jamaica. The business has been
using the manual methods of operations in all areas of their business.

This year the company’s management team has decided to computerize its operations for the efficient
running of the business. The computer system they purchased came with general purpose software that has
a Word-processor, Spreadsheet and Database Management components, etc.

As a test, the owner of the business would like to use the software to carry out the following tasks for the
month of

October:

1. Produce a brochure for ANGELS BOUTIQUE that informs the public about the business and
details of the upcoming Christmas sale.

2. Analysis of the salary details of the employees for the month.

3. Storage of personal information of employees and their sales details.

4. Preparation of letters for the outstanding employees, who achieved their sales target informing them
about their commission amounts.

5. Creation a website to promote their product and service.

You are in charge of setting up the necessary templates from the various applications that will
permit all employees of the business to efficiently carry out these activities.

SECTION A – SPREADSHEET

Introduction

The spreadsheet package will be used to create a model that will allow the owner of the boutique to
manipulate and monitor the monthly salary details of the employees.

Currently, there are 25 employees at ANGELS BOUTIQUE. There are FOUR (4) categories of employees
and EACH category attracts a different basic monthly salary. There are SIX (6) supervisors, seventeen (17)
Sales persons, ONE (1) Manager and ONE (1) Assistant Manager at the boutique.

The categories of employment with current rates are given in the table below. The table should be on a
separate worksheet.

There are Allowances and Deductions in the employee’s salaries. The allowances are Daily Allowance,
Travel Allowance and Entertainment Allowance. The deductions are Pay As You Earn (PAYE), Education
Tax(EDT) and National Insurance Scheme(NIS). These are calculated based on their basic salary. The
travel Allowance and Entertainment Allowance are available to the Manager and Assistant Manager
ONLY. The rate of payments of these allowances and deductions also need to be kept on the worksheet
with the salary rate.

You are required to:

Create one or more worksheets that will enable the owner of the business to easily analyze, modify and
monitor the salary details of his staff. The following is a sample section of the worksheet.

TASK A

a. Create the information for the 25 employees’ salary details for the month of October 2020.

i. Employees’ details should be sorted by Last Name then by First Name.

ii. Use appropriate functions to calculate the individual Allowances.

iii. Use simple formulas to calculate individual Deductions.

The allowances and deductions must be calculated using cell references

b. Add extra columns to include the Gross Income and Net Income.

i. Gross Income is calculated by adding the Basic Salary to the Allowances (Basic Salary +
Allowances).

ii. Net Income is calculated by subtracting the Deductions from Gross Income (Gross Income –
Deductions).

c. Include a row to calculate the totals of each of the numeric columns.

d. Insert an additional row to indicate the total of all the employee’s calculations.

e. Save your workbook as Task A.

TASK B

a. Make a copy of your workbook and name it TASK B.

b. The fifth employee on your list got a new job and he/she resigned from his post at ANGELS
BOUTIQUE. Remove this employee from your spreadsheet.

c. The management team decided to change the Daily Allowance (DA) rate to 12.5%. Adjust this
rate in your workbook.

d. Sort the worksheet of TASK B by employee Category, then by Last Name and finally by First Name.

e. Create complex criterion to select all information on all employees whose Last Name begins with the
letter

‘B’ and are in the Sales Staff or Assistant Manager category.

f. Create a chart to compare the Total Allowances (DA, TA and EA) and the Total Deductions
(PAYE, EDT and NIS) paid by the business for the month of October 2020.
g. Create a pivot table of all Sales Person identifying Basic Salary, Total Allowances, Total
Deduction along with Gross Pay and Net Pay.
h. Save the changes to TASK B

SECTION B – DATABASE MANAGEMENT

Introduction

The database management component of the software that ANGELS BOUTIQUE purchased will be used
to store personal details of the employees, their sales details (used to determine their promotions,
commissions and further employment) and their basic salary rates.

Currently, there are 25 employees in ANGELS BOUTIQUE. There are FOUR (4) categories of
employees and EACH category attracts a different basic monthly salary. There are SIX (6) Supervisors,
SEVENTEEN (17) Sales Persons, ONE Manager and ONE (1) Assistant Manager at the clothing store.
The categories of membership with current rates are given in the table below. This table must be stored in
a separate table called BASICSALARYRATES.

The table PERSONALDETAILS store the Employee ID (ID), First Name (FName), Last Name
(LName), Gender, DateJoined, Category Code (CatCode), Address, City and Contact Number
(ContNum). Employee ID is created by using the employee’s initials and three (3) digits, e.g. the
employee John Brown have the employee ID: JB100.

The table SALES stores the details of individual Sales Staff ONLY. It should contain the fields
EmpID, Week1Sales, Week2Sales, Week3Sales, Week4Sales and TotalSales.

Create a table called SALARYDETAILS. This should contain fields EmpID, Basic Salary,
Allowances, Deductions, Total Allowances, Total Deductions, Gross Pay and Net Pay.

You are required to:

1. Set up a database with FOUR (4) tables containing information on the employees’ details with
appropriate field names, data types and field sizes (where necessary).

2. Perform the following queries on your database:

a) List ID, first name, last name, address, city, contact number and date joined of all sales staff
that joined the business after December 31, 2015. The list should be sorted by last name and
then by first name. Save the query as Qry2010.

b) List ID, first name, last name, of all sales staff who created more than $50,000 in total sales.
Save the query as QrySales.

c) The business has decided to give a commission to all sales staff at a rate of 3% of their total
sales whose total sales was $50,000 and above. Create a calculated field called Commission to
calculate the total commission amount. The list should include ID, first name, last name, basic
salary and commission amount. Save the query as QryCommission.

d) Use the Summary features to calculate the following:

i. The highest (maximum) total sales amount achieved by an employee. Save the query

QryMaxTotalSales

ii. The total commission earned by all the Sales Staff. Save this query QryTotCommission.

iii. The number of employees who are entitled to commission. Save as


QryCountCommission.

e) Prepare a Report containing the employees grouped by category and sorted by last name in
ascending order and then by first name in descending order. The report should show the total
salary paid out for each category of employees as well as the overall total salary. The fields to
be displayed are ID, first name, last name, Gender, DateJoined, Full name of category, contact
number and basic salary. You are expected to give the report an appropriate title. Save the
report as RptEmployees.

f) Create a form with employees’ details highlighting their personal data and salary particulars.

SECTION C – WORD-PROCESSING

Introduction

The owner of ANGELS BOUTIQUE plans to create a brochure to notify the customers about the variety
of products that are sold at the business and also about the upcoming Christmas Sale.

The General Manager of the business also would like to get a report of the salary and sales details of the
activities of the business for the month of September 2020.

You are required to:

1. Create a brochure to inform the public about the variety of products at the boutique and also
about the upcoming Christmas Sale. The text in the brochure must be carefully justified with 1.5
line spacing, using columns to create a leaflet that can be folded. Use appropriate margins and
layout so that folding of the brochure can be easily done. Also include a table providing details
of any product that will be on sale with the respective prices for each.

2. Prepare a letterhead with the name, address, city and logo for the business. The logo can be a
suitable graphic.

3. Using mail merge facilities, prepare a letter for the staff members who will be provided with a
commission to commend the staff about their hard work and dedication.

4. Prepare a fillable application form with the letterhead for prospective employees. Form must
include ANY three of the following:
a.option boxes
b. check boxes
c.text boxes
d. date picker
e.drop-down lists
f. command buttons

SECTION D – WEBPAGE DESIGN

ANGELS BOUTIQUE has requested that you design a webpage to provide general information on the
boutique along with highlighting the Christmas sale. The webpage should include the following:
● The company’s’ logo
● Display information about the boutique (Address, products and services etc)
● Links to the company’s email address and a web page giving history on the company (this web page
may or may not exist).
● Links to a location within the page
● Links to a file you created
Data used in the web page should be sourced from the Database and word section of the project.
Note: You may use an online platform to assist you with this. Eg. Wix.com, weebly.com, Google sites etc.

SECTION E – PROBLEM SOLVING AND PROGRAM IMPLEMENTATION

TASK 1 - Problem Solving

You are required to:

1. Develop an Algorithm (pseudo code or flowchart) that will accept the names of all staff members
and their total sales for the month. The algorithm should calculate the commission at 3% of their
total sales amount of all employees who meet the commission criteria. The program should display
the total sales, the total commission amount, the number of persons entered, the highest
commission amount and the number of persons without a commission.

2. Design and execute a trace table to test the logics of the algorithm above. You are expected to come
up with the appropriate columns for your trace table.

TASK 2 - Program Implementation

You are required to:

Write a Pascal program to implement the algorithm created in TASK 1 of the Problem Solving Section.
