II. Concept Map/Mind Map

Topic : Weather
III. Define the following terms

1. Weather : The state of the atmosphere at a particular place for a day or a short period
of time.
Example : Windy, Rainy, cloudy, Sunny, Humid etc.

2. Climate : Climate is the long-term pattern of weather in a particular area.

Example : Summer, Winter, Monsoon, Autumn & Spring

3. Heat Zone : Heat zones are the different zones of the earth, where the sun rays fall
differently, thus causing different climate patterns.

IV. Answer the following:

4. Elucidate the important factors that determine the climate of a place.
There are many different factors that affect climate around the world. It is the varying
influence of these factors that lead to different parts of the Earth experiencing differing
climates. The most important natural factors are:
A. Distance from the Equator
B. Height above the Sea level (Altitude)
C. Distance from the Sea
D. Direction of the Winds
E. Humidity
Distance from the Equator
The distance from the equator affects the climate of a place. At the poles, energy from the sun
reaches the Earth's surface at lower angles and passes through a thicker layer of atmosphere
than at the equator. This means the climate is cooler further from the Equator.

Height above the sea level

Temperature decreases as you move to higher altitudes. So, the mountains are cooler than the
plains.
Distance from the sea
Coastal areas are cooler and wetter than inland areas. Clouds form when warm air from
inland areas meets cool air from the sea.
Direction of Winds
The winds move air masses, which causes weather. The direction of prevailing winds
determines which type of air mass (hot / cold)usually moves over an area.

Humidity
The amount of moisture in the air is known as humidity. Hot places tend to be more humid
than cool places because heat causes water to evaporate faster.
5. Why do areas near the Equator receive more heat from the Sun, than those near the
poles?

★ The areas near the Equator are closer and in front of the Sun. The sunrays fall
directly and vertically in these areas. So the areas near the Equator receive more
heat.

★ The areas near the poles are a little far and not directly in front of the sun. The
sunrays fall slanting in the areas. So these areas receive less heat as compared to
the Tropical region.

6. Construct a diagram for heat zones and characterize the following zones.

1. Torrid Zone
2. Temperate Zone
3. Frigid Zone
Climatic Zones / Heat Zones

Torrid Zone
★ Torrid zone lies on both sides of the equator.
★ The Torrid Zone receives the maximum amount of heat from the Sun.
★ The climate is generally very hot.
Temperate Zone
★ The Temperate Zone lies between the torrid zone and frigid zones in
the hemisphere.
★ The sun never shines overhead in this zone.
★ This area is neither very hot nor very cold.
Frigid Zone
★ Frigid zone lies between the Arctic Circle and the North Pole in the
Northern Hemisphere & the Antarctic circle and South pole in the
Southern Hemisphere.
★ Sun rays are slanting and give very little heat.
★ This zone has an extremely cold climate.
