With over 23,500 staff working across 5 of the UK’s best known hospitals as well as
providing services in the community, we have a long tradition of clinical and scientific
achievement, bringing together world class clinical services, teaching and research.
We also have one of the National Institute for Health Research’s biomedical
research centres.
Our values drive everything that we do, developed in close collaboration with staff to
provide our patients with exceptional care every day.
Put patients first
Take pride in what we do
Respect others
Strive to be the best
Act with Integrity
Our strategy is central to achieving our vision which is to advance health and
wellbeing as a local, national and international leader in clinical care, education and
research. Our three strategic priorities are:
Patients
People
Partnerships
Established in 2015, our Management Training Scheme offers the chance to develop
professional and leadership skills through a combination of practical experience and
a post graduate qualification.
What will you experience?
You will undertake two distinct placements over two years – one will be an
operational role ensuring services are managed and delivered in the best possible
way for our patients, and the other will be a placement focusing on quality and
service improvements, or longer-term plans and projects. This means you will gain
exposure across the Trust, from Theatres and Anaesthetics through to our Major
Projects Office.
As well as stretch and senior exposure, you will be exposed to a wide range of work,
touching on all elements of general management. This will encompass practical
experience in:
Organisational strategy
Service improvement
Change management
Project management
Financial management
HR management
Healthcare policy
Each placement will provide different challenges and varied stakeholders. Everything
you do will have a focus on delivering the best, high quality care for our patients. If
you wish to make a significant contribution and, at the same time, develop a range of
management and leadership skills then we want to hear from you.
This is a two year programme which includes studying towards a Level 7 Senior
Leader Apprenticeship. With hard work and commitment, you will complete the
scheme and be in a position to apply for roles at a more senior level with greater
complexity, where you could earn an annual salary of around £47,000. As well as
Service Manager positions, recent Alumni roles include Strategy Analyst, Project
Manager and Programme Manager.
Who is the scheme for?
Put simply, we are seeking NHS Leaders of the future. For this, you’ll be expected to
be ambitious, motivated and have a drive to succeed. We welcome trainees from a
broad range of backgrounds. We are delighted to welcome internal applicants from
the Guy’s & St Thomas’ family, candidates from the wider NHS, and those whom
have never previously worked in health and social care.
In addition to the requirements set out in the person specification below, we are
looking for candidates with a hunger to improve services and a commitment to the
NHS. In contrast to other fast-track programmes, trainees do not require a degree,
but they require a Level 2 English and Maths in order to complete the educational
component.
How will I be supported?
Frequent contact with your line manager to ensure you’re both challenged and
supported in your role.
Study Skills support through our Education provider.
Mentoring from a Trust senior leader.
Buddying from a Trainee from the previous Management Training Scheme
cohort.

Equality, Diversity & Inclusion (ED&I) at Guy’s & St Thomas’
Guy's and St Thomas' is firmly committed to meeting the aim of the NHS constitution
and providing an equally welcoming to people of all backgrounds, cultures,
nationalities and religions. ED&I is front and centre of the Management Training
Scheme, and we were particularly pleased to welcome a cohort in 2022 where over
60% of individuals identified as being from a Black, Asian or Ethnic Minority
background.
We are dedicated to creating a working environment where all staff have equality of
opportunity, are treated with professionalism, dignity and respect and are able to
deliver and develop to the best of their ability without having to face discrimination or
harassment in the workplace. This work is represented in a number of programmes
and initiatives, including:
Reverse mentoring
Diverse interview panels
Equality, Diversity and Inclusion workshops
Women’s leadership network
Multicultural staff network

Sustainability at Guy’s & St Thomas’
Our mission is to be at the forefront of delivering sustainable healthcare, not just for
today’s patients but tomorrow’s too, by actively protecting the environment we
depend on.
The overall aims of our sustainability strategy are to:
Be recognised as a leading NHS acute Trust for sustainability locally, regionally
and nationally
Make sustainability an explicit aim in our Trust’s core objectives, embed
sustainability into service planning, contractual agreements and business
processes
Empower all staff to embed sustainability into their day to day work through the
provision of training, facilities and resource
Work with our partners, suppliers and other key stakeholders to drive shared
sustainability objectives
Measure, manage and report on the progress we make against our targets
We will focus our environmental sustainability work in areas where we believe we
can make the biggest difference:
Carbon zero
Connecting with nature
Cycle of resources
What is General Management?
Our scheme gives you practical experience of general management and other
leadership roles in the NHS. General management roles vary across organisations,
however the majority will include people management, resource and budget
management, working closely with clinical colleagues and consulting patients and
the public on improving services.
We aim to equip you with the skills and the confidence to be able to make a real
difference to our healthcare services – with the fundamental aim of improving patient
care. The scheme is designed to give you a range of experience so that you can
learn, develop and move into more senior posts following completion.

What Learning is in place?
During your time with us you will be provided with a range of support and learning
opportunities. These are designed to complement practical skills developed while on
placement, and augment your natural desire to improve patient services and become
a great leader.
You’ll be studying towards a two-year blended learning Postgraduate Diploma in
Leadership & Management with Hult Ashridge – recognised by the Financial Times
as a top 100 Business School. This allows you to combine the knowledge, skills and
behaviours from your placements with theory and cross-sector case studies as part
of a formal qualification, enhancing your performance both on the scheme and in the
future.
Trainees will be required to travel to the Hult Ashridge Estate campus in
Hertfordshire approximately every 8 weeks. Reasonable expenses that you incur in
travelling to the site will be covered by GSTT.
This is an apprenticeship programme fully funded by the apprenticeship levy. That
means there is no financial contribution from you as a trainee. While there is an
option to level up to an MSc in Leadership & Management, please note that this will
need to be funded by individual trainees at a cost of c. £4,000.
Completing the education and training scheme require a two year commitment. The
Diploma is structured in a way that brings learning into the workplace, giving
Trainees the chance to put theory into practice.
