Tutorial ODE

(1) This document contains tutorial problems on solving first order differential equations. It includes problems on eliminating arbitrary constants, solving exact and separable differential equations, and finding integrating factors. (2) The problems cover a wide range of techniques for solving differential equations including eliminating arbitrary constants from parametric equations, solving exact and separable equations, finding integrating factors, and solving homogeneous and non-homogeneous equations. (3) Methods presented include eliminating arbitrary constants from parametric equations, determining if a differential equation is exact and finding the appropriate M(x,y) and N(x,y) functions, solving separable equations by integrating factors, and using substitution and separation of variables to solve homogeneous and non-

(1) Eliminate the arbitrary constants and obtain the differential equation satisfied by it:
(i) x2 + y 2 = a2 .
(ii) (x − p)2 + (y − q)2 = r2 , where r is a fixed constant.
(iii) x2 − y 2 = a(x2 + y 2 )2 .
(iv) y = ae2x + be−2x + c.
(v) y = ae−x + be−2x + ce−3x .

(2) Solve the following differential equations:

(i) [y(1 + 1/x) + cos y]dx + (x + log x − x sin y)dy = 0.
(ii) (y 4 + 2y)dx + (xy 3 + 2y 4 − 4x)dy = 0.
(iii) (2x2 y 2 + y)dx = (x3 y − 3x)dy.
(iv) [x tan(y/x) − y sec2 (y/x)]dx + x sec2 (y/x)dy = 0.

(3) Discuss how the functions M (x, y) and N (x, y) can be found so that each differential
equation is exact:
1
(i) M (x, y)dx + (xexy + 2xy + )dy = 0
  x
−1 −1 x
(ii) x 2 y 2 + 2 dx + N (x, y)dy = 0.
x +y
(4) Solve the following differential equations:
(i) (x2 + y 2 + 2x)dx + 2ydy = 0.
a2 (xdy − ydy)
(ii) xdx + ydy = .
x2 + y 2
(5) Solve the following differential equations:
(i) x2 ydx − (x3 + y 3 )dy = 0.
(ii) (y 3 − 2yx2 )dx + (2xy 2 − x3 )dy = 0.

(6) Solve the following differential equations:

(i) (x2 y 2 + xy + 1)ydx + (x2 y 2 − xy + 1)xdy = 0.
(ii) y(xy + 2x2 y 2 )dx + x(xy − x2 y 2 )dy = 0.

(7) Solve the following differential equations:

(i) (y 4 + 2y)dx − (xy 3 + 2y 4 − 2x)dy = 0.
(ii) (x4 ex − 2mxy 2 )dx + x(xy − x2 y 2 )dy = 0.

(8) Find an integrating factor and solve the differential equations:

(i) (2x2 y 2 + y)dx + (x3 y + 3x)dy = 0.
(ii) y(x3 ey + x) + x = cy.
