Return to River Town

From 1996 to 1998, Peter Hessler was a Peace Corps volunteer. He was an English teacher in China. He
worked in a region near the Yangtze River. It is now part of the Three Gorges Dam*. Last year, he
returned to the region on a visit.

I am in the White Crane Ridge Underwater Museum. It’s a very strange museum – it’s under 40 metres of
water on the side of the Three Gorges Dam. The director of the museum is Huang Dejian. I knew him
before the museum existed and before the Three Gorges Dam existed. I taught English at the local college
in the town of Fuling. Fuling was quiet and isolated. There wasn’t a motorway or a railway line. The river
ferry to the city (Chongqing) took seven hours. Foreigners were very rare. When I ate my lunch in the
town centre, a crowd often came to watch me. The city had one escalator and one nightclub. There
weren’t any traffic lights. I didn’t know anybody with a car.

From 1996 to 1998, I worked at Fuling Teachers College. My students came from rural homes but they
wanted to be English teachers. I learned many things from my students. They helped me to understand
people’s experiences of moving from the countryside to big cities. My students didn’t have much money,
but they were optimistic and they had opportunities.

During my visit, I meet about 15 of my old students. They tell me about their old classmates. Many of
them have left Fuling. One is a Communist Party official in Tibet, another started a taxi company and
became a millionaire. One woman is a radio presenter. Another now teaches English to the children of
rich factory owners. My old students are interested in analysing their society. One student, Emily, tells me
about her rich cousin. She says that he is richer now but he isn’t happier.

My last meeting on this visit is with Huang Zongming and his brother Zongguo. When I lived here, they
were fishermen. When the first stage of the dam was completed, they left their home. I was sure that their
lives were changed forever. But now I discover that everything is almost the same for them. They are still
fishermen. The fishing on the river is still good. The dam has not changed some things in Fuling.

Cycling to India

When I was 11, during a junior school leavers' assembly in front of all the mums and dads, my
headmistress asked my class what they wanted to do when they left school. Footballer, doctor, film star,
politician, came the replies. My answer? "I want to cycle around the world and raise money for charity."
A big cheer resounded around the school hall. "So cool."

Little did they know that 20 years later, I would be setting off on a 9,000-mile journey to India, on my
own, carrying everything I needed on my steel-framed bicycle, affectionately known as "Shirley". I would
like to say it was planned in detail and that everything ran like clockwork. In reality, I was arrested
twice, chased by wild dogs, beaten and wined and dined by the mafia and attacked by bandits.

On my last day, I was cycling through the Bandipur wildlife park in southern India. My flowery bike
wasn't great camouflage and startled a number of elephants as I passed. They decided to charge. The
advice is "if an elephant charges you, stand your ground, and bow your head to show respect."

What tosh! With 30 tonnes of muscle and bone crashing towards me, destroying small trees and making
the ground vibrate under my feet, there was no way I was standing firm. I dropped my bike into third gear
and floored it.

Another time I ran out of food and water in the desert and was woken one morning to find maggots in my
hair and beard. Yet the greatest memories are of so many wonderful people I met in every country, who
invited me into their homes to celebrate local festivals, play music, dance, sing, eat, and share each other's
cultures, beliefs, history and ways of life.

After six months' cycling, I rolled into Chembakolli, a tiny village, my final destination. It was my 31st
birthday – 20 years since I had first dreamed up the idea. I was greeted by a carnival of people playing the
drums, singing, cheering, and waving banners saying "Happy birthday". All I could do was crouch down
and cry tears of joy. I'd cycled 9,000 miles from England to India. I'd lived my dream.

Sailing’s Young Hope
Ellen MacArthur is the inspirational woman sailor who on February 7, 2005 broke the world
record when she became the fastest person to sail around the world. Ellen became interested in sailing at
the age of eight when she was taken aboard her aunt’s sailing boat. This was an exciting experience for a
young girl living in land-locked Derbyshire so far from the coast.

Ellen faced many difficulties in becoming a professional sailor because she lacked sponsorship. Despite
this, she raised enough money to buy a boat and when she was twenty, she entered the Mini Transat race
in France and sailed her boat 3000 miles across the Atlantic in just 33 days. Impressed by this remarkable
achievement, a group called Kingfisher gave Ellen sponsorship. Ellen’s career as a sailor really took off
after this, particularly in France, where she was adored by the public and was given the official title
‘Sailing’s Young Hope’.
Next, Ellen entered the Vendee Globe competition with her new boat Kingfisher; she exceeded
all expectations and finished second. The greatest challenge for her was spending over 90 days alone
facing terrifying storms at sea. Ellen showed remarkable determination, courage and endurance.
Ellen went on to become the fastest solo sailor to sail around the world in 2005. In recognition of
her achievement, she was made a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire. Ellen is a woman
who has succeeded despite all odds being against her and she is an inspiration to us all.

Life on a Pirate Ship

Many pirate ships were small and fast so they could chase and catch other ships. Many merchant ships
were larger and slower than pirate ships. Life as a pirate wasn’t easy. The work was dangerous and the
conditions on board a pirate ship were tough. Pirates were often cold and wet and didn’t sleep in
comfortable conditions. Pirates often got sick. One of the reasons for this was because of the food they
ate. Pirates didn’t have much fresh food on board. The meats they ate were salted so they could last a long
time at sea. Pirates also ate hard biscuits, bone soups and anything else they could steal from other ships.

Rules
Pirates had rules they had to follow. These rules were to make sure everything ran as smoothly as
possible. The crew were expected to keep their cutlass and pistol clean and ready to use. It was forbidden
for pirates to play dice or card games for money. Pirates were not allowed to steal from one another, nor
could they fight each other whilst on board to solve disagreements. Attempting to escape the ship was
strictly forbidden. They complained about the rules, but in vain.

Punishments
There was a long list of punishments at the ready to make sure the crew obeyed the rules. Mast heading
was a punishment for more minor crimes. The pirate was tied to the top of the mast and had to endure the
cold, uncomfortable conditions. Flogging was a very common form of punishment. Some pirates who
refused to follow the rules were sold as slaves. For the most serious crimes, a pirate might have been
marooned. This means they were left to die on a deserted island with little or no, food or water.

Every year for many years the people of Milpa Alta, Mexico, have prepared a feast in the week
before Christmas. Sixty thousand tamales and 15,000 litres of hot chocolate are made in less than a week,
not too much and not too little for the thousands of people who show up for the feast. The feast is called
La Rejunta and is made for pilgrims preparing for the long walk to the holy cave of El Señor de Chalma
on January 3rd. The people responsible for organising La Rejunta are called the majordomos. It’s an
honour to be chosen and so many people want to do it that the waiting list is full until 2046.
The stages in the organisation of La Rejunta are the same every year. Tradition is important to the
Milpa Alta people. Corn has been grown here for hundreds of years and the name of the region means
‘high cornfield’. Local farmers grow most of the corn, meat, and vegetables needed as ingredients for the
meal. And a year before the event, the men go to the forest and collect wood that they pile up high near

the home of the majordomo so that it will be properly dried before it’s used for open-air cooking. This
year’s majordomos are Virginia Meza Torres and her husband Fermín Lara Jiménez. ‘There is an infinity
of things to do,’ Virginia Meza Torres says firmly, as if to indicate there is no time to talk. Virginia is
heading to the local offices to get the necessary permits and Fermín sets off into the countryside in search
of more ingredients. They leave their daughter Montserrat Lara Meza in charge. She is a 24-year-old
graduate student who’s come home to help her parents for the week. Volunteers are starting to arrive and
Montserrat wanders down the hill to a shed to see how the toasting of the corn is going. Everything is
made from the basics – no instant mixes or other culinary shortcuts are allowed.
Such traditional approaches are part of everyday life here. Eating together is perhaps the most
important example. ‘In my experience, there is a glue, a bonding, that comes from the time together at the
table,’ says Josefina García Jiménez. She often cooks for her nieces and nephews and says, ‘It feels like I
am passing down a tradition, and when it comes to their turn to be adults, they will remember what I have
done. Here we have time to cook, time to think just what ingredients are needed, time to show our kids
through cooking that we love them.’
When the day of La Rejunta arrives, the volunteers have been up all night, though no one admits to
feeling tired. Fermin has made sure there are enough tamales for everyone, and the head cook has been
stirring the atole (chocolate drink) all night. After a 14-year wait, and a full year of preparation, it’s
almost time for Fermin and Virginia to hand over responsibility to the next majordomos. But first, there

What went wrong in Detroit?
The city is now 69th in population density (people per square mile) among US cities. Detroit’s
population fell for several reasons. Partly it was because people moved to the suburbs in the 1950s. Then
there were devastating race riots in 1967, which scared even more people away from the city. Then there
was the dramatic decline in car manufacture as companies like General Motors and Chrysler struggled to
survive. And finally, in 2008, came the global financial crisis. The problem of Detroit was basic but hard
to solve. Many of Detroit’s people are poor: half of the city’s households live on less than 25,000 dollars
a year. They are spread across different neighbourhoods of this huge city (it’s big enough to fit in
Manhattan, Boston and San Francisco).
In 2013, the city did something unusual: it declared itself bankrupt. It was the largest city
bankruptcy in US history, estimated at 18-20 billion dollars. Now that the city is free of debt, it has
money to do some of what needs to be done. It has replaced about 40,000 streetlights so that places feel
safer. Police response time has shrunk from almost an hour to less than 20 minutes. And roughly a
hundred empty houses are demolished each week to make space for new buildings. With the nation’s
biggest urban bankruptcy behind it, Detroit is also attracting investors, innovators and young adventurers.
New businesses have been encouraged with the New Economy Initiative. This gave grants of 10,000
dollars to each of 30 winners with ideas for small businesses. It seems that every week a new business
opens in Detroit – grocery stores, juice bars, coffee shops, even bicycle makers. Finally, the city is
working again.

Skiing down Everest


Mr Yuichiro Miura, the Japanese skier, told reporters in Katmandu today how he narrowly escaped
death in his attempt to ski down Mount Everest this month.
His descent began at 25,918 ft above sea level and ended when he fell 100 yards short of a crevasse,
he said. In the final seconds, as he hurtled down the mountainside at about 50 miles an hour, dodging
boulders in his path, he was convinced that he was about to be killed. The fall saved his life.

descent. Miura first climbed 820 ft above the starting point for an easy 30-second run down to the South

He said that he had begun the downhill run as soon as winds had decreased and within five seconds
he was rushing headlong at 100 miles an hour. The 40-degree slope soon narrowed abruptly, with
exposed rocks on either side, and the winds buffeted him from both sides.
He found that at times his brake parachute was failing to slow his descent, and he tried to check his
speed by pressing the edges of his skis harder into the snow.
A minute later he found that he was skiing over undulating rock-strewn ice. He hit one of the boulders
at an altitude of about 23,600 ft, went out of control, slithered, lost his right ski and crashed into a
boulder. Almost unconscious, he finally came to a halt close to the crevasse. But he was unhurt.

Reality television is a genre of television programming which, it is claimed, presents unscripted

Cape Cod House


Beginning about 1670, on the stormy, windswept peninsula of Cape Cod, a local dwelling type

Africa Check, a fledgling fact checking website, is attempting to pin down unfounded claims made
by the country's leaders, media outlets along with widely held beliefs.It is a website that challenges
media, politicians and the occasional social media celebrity when they manipulate the truth, or ignore it
completely, said Julian Rademeyer, southern Africa editor for the site.
"I think the fundamental element of our work is that we are trying to get people to question what
they're told, what they read, what politicians say to them, and to look at what the information that is there
and ask essentially what the fundamental question is 'Where is the evidence?' If someone makes a claim,
where is the evidence to support that claim, and to actually interrogate those claims and not to accept
things purely for what they are," Rademeyer said.
Following in the footsteps of popular American websites like PolitiFact and Factcheck.org, Africa
Check is the first media outlet in South Africa to solely work in fact checking.
South Africa has a strong legacy of investigative journalism and photography that dates back to
the apartheid era. But like many countries, Rademeyer says its news industry has been hampered by
shrinking budgets and newsrooms."Because of the fact that newspapers don't have the resources they

project it could play a very important role," he said. "We've done some very basic fact checking or fact
sheet-related reporting on elements of the elections in Zimbabwe recently. We'd obviously like to do
more of that in the next elections in Zimbabwe, for instance, and elections in neighboring countries. And
try to expand our reach." With presidential elections looming next year in South Africa, Botswana,
Mozambique and Namibia, the site will be busy.

EXPLORING GEORGIA
Every year my wife and I go on a camping holiday in France. Although this is something we
both really enjoy, this year I wanted to go somewhere I’d never been before and do something
exciting. We did some research and came up with the idea of going to the US. We chose a kayaking
holiday in the southern state of Georgia. Neither of us had ever been kayaking before, but we
managed to find a package which included lessons for beginners.
Georgia is an amazing place; it’s a crossroad of different cultures and it has had a fascinating
and at times violent past. It is also a place of untouched natural beauty, with nature parks and an
unspoilt coastline. We went to Cathead Creek, an area rich in wildlife and scenery. Our kayaking
instructor was a friendly local called Frank. As my wife and I had never been kayaking before, we
found the first few lessons a bit challenging. In spite of this, Frank was always very patient and he
would constantly offer words of encouragement. After some practice, we became more confident
and realised it wasn’t that difficult. We also did a safety course and Frank made us aware of any
potential dangers, including the alligators in the swamp! After completing the course, we felt ready
for adventure and we decided to go further out along the Darien River. As we glided down the river,
I felt a delicious shiver of fear run up my spine as I recalled Frank’s words of advice before we left,
‘Watch out for the alligators.’
We quietly slipped past a huge alligator, its unblinking eyes staring at us with mild interest.
We paddled on and watched brightly coloured birds fly over the water. We stopped to have some
bread and cheese and admire the view. We saw fishing boats returning with their catch of Georgian
shrimp, which is the region’s culinary speciality and is definitely worth trying if you visit Georgia.
We also spent a few days on Cumberland Island, which is one of the many islands off
Georgia’s coast. Cumberland Island is a protected paradise, which makes it both secluded and
peaceful. We rented bicycles and followed a trail which led to a beautiful beach. On the following
day, we took a tour of the island and this gave us the opportunity to see all kinds of amazing wildlife.
It was a wonderful experience and, without a doubt, Cumberland Island is a place of unbelievable
beauty.
As my wife is interested in history, we also dedicated some time to visiting various museums. I
particularly enjoyed the Geechee Kunda Visitor’s Centre, which some locals had recommended -
here we learnt about the first Africans that had been brought to the region in slave ships. A huge
cotton and rice empire was built in Georgia using the Africans as workers.

Dirty Britain

Before the grass has thickened on the roadside verges and leaves have started growing on the trees is a
perfect time to look around and see just how dirty Britain has become. The pavements are stained with
chewing gum that has been spat out and the gutters are full of discarded fast food cartons. Years ago I
remember travelling abroad and being saddened by the plastic bags, discarded bottles and soiled nappies
at the edge of every road. Nowadays, Britain seems to look at least as bad. What has gone wrong?

The problem is that the rubbish created by our increasingly mobile lives lasts a lot longer than before. If it
is not cleared up and properly thrown away, it stays in the undergrowth for years; a semi-permanent
reminder of what a tatty little country we have now.

Firstly, it is estimated that 10 billion plastic bags have been given to shoppers. These will take anything
from 100 to 1,000 years to rot. However, it is not as if there is no solution to this. As soon as the Irish
government introduced a tax on non-recyclable carrier bags, their use was reduced by 90%. When he was
a minister, Michael Meacher endeavoured to introduce a similar arrangement in Britain. The plastics
industry protested, of course. However, they need not have bothered; the idea was killed before it could
draw breath, leaving supermarkets free to give away plastic bags.

What is clearly necessary right now is some sort of combined initiative, both individual and collective,
before it is too late. The alternative is to continue sliding downhill until we have a country that looks like
a vast municipal rubbish tip. We may well be at the tipping point. Yet we know that people respond to
their environment. If things around them are clean and tidy, people behave cleanly and tidily. If they are
surrounded by squalor, they behave squalidly. Instead of looking tidy, much of Britain actually looks
pretty squalid. What will it look like in five years? Britain will be cleaner provided the government takes
the necessary steps.

Five score years ago, a great American, in whose symbolic shadow we stand today, signed the
Emancipation Proclamation. This momentous decree came as a great beacon light of hope to millions of
Negro slaves who had been seared in the flames of withering injustice. It came as a joyous daybreak to
end the long night of their captivity.
But 100 years later, the Negro still is not free. One hundred years later, the life of the Negro is still

When the architects of our republic wrote the magnificent words of the Constitution and the
Declaration of Independence, they were signing a promissory note to which every American was to fall
heir. This note was a promise that all men — yes, Black men as well as white men — would be
guaranteed the unalienable rights of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
It is obvious today that America has defaulted on this promissory note insofar as her citizens of
color are concerned. Instead of honoring this sacred obligation, America has given the Negro people a
bad check, a check which has come back marked insufficient funds.But we refuse to believe that the bank
of justice is bankrupt.
We refuse to believe that there are insufficient funds in the great vaults of opportunity of this
nation. And so we've come to cash this check, a check that will give us upon demand the riches of
freedom and the security of justice.
We have also come to his hallowed spot to remind America of the fierce urgency of now. This is
no time to engage in the luxury of cooling off or to take the tranquilizing drug of gradualism.
