I.Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of the module, you are expected to be able to:
1. Discuss the culture in a simple context.
2. Enumerate and analyze the types and elements of culture.
Material Culture
o This are material and physical objects, products of human efforts to control his
environment and me his life comfortable and safe
Non – Material Culture
o This are religions, arts, ideas, customs, values system, attitudes, knowledge,
basically objects that does not hold any physical form or shape.
Real Culture
o Is culture that which can be observed in our social life. What you see and observe
that is real culture.
Ideal Culture
o It is the culture which a society strive to become but never achieved like a
framework or something that we try to achieve and ideal look.

Characteristics of Culture
Culture is learned
o Culture can be acquired through education, training and experience
Culture is shared
o All the traits, attitudes, ideas, knowledge and material objects like radio, T.V.,
and cars etc… is actually shared by member of society.
Culture is Transmitted
o Meaning it can be transmitted from one generation to another through the
medium of language, verbal or non-verbal through the gestures or signs, and
orally or in writing.
Culture is changing
o Culture is always changing in different societies in different speeds, it constantly
adapts itself to the environment.
Components of culture
Norms
These are guideline that people suppose to follow
Social Norms:
a. Folkways
b. Mores
Laws
These are formalized laws enacted by people vested with legitimate authority.
Ideas, Beliefs, Values
Ideas are non-material aspects of culture and embody man’s conception of
his physical, social and cultural workd
Beliefs refer to a person’s conviction about a certain idea.
Values are abstract concepts of what is important and worthwhile, they are
general ideas that individuals share about is good or bad.
Material culture
o Refers to concrete and tangible objects produced and used by man to
satisfy his varied needs and wants.
Symbols
o Refers to an object, gesture sound, color or design that represents
something other that itself.
Different Viewpoints/Perspective on culture
Culture relativism
The concept of cultural relativism states that cultures differ so that a cultural
trait, act or idea has no meaning but its meaning only within its culture.
Culture Shock
It refers to to the feelingof disbelief, disorganization and frustration one
experiences when he encounters cultural patterns or practices which are different from his.

Ethnocentrism
It refers to the tendency to see the behaviors, beliefs, values, and norms of
one’s own group as the right way of living and to judge others by those standards
Xenocentrism
It refers to the idea what is foreign is best and that one’s lifestyle, products
ideas are inferior to those others.
Subculture
This refers to smaller group which develop norms, values, beliefs, and special
languages which make the distinct from the broader society.
