Inspection & Test Check List

1) The document is an inspection checklist for testing fiber optic cables using an OTDR machine as part of an EPC revitalization project of an RCC plant. 2) It lists 15 items to check during the OTDR test, including validating the OTDR calibration, cleaning connectors, using the correct settings, and testing in both cable directions. 3) The contractor and Pertamina reps must sign off to confirm the inspection and that fiber loss, splice loss, and connector loss meet the specified limits.

Item(s) to be Inspected:
OTDR Test on Fiber Optic cables
Comments
Item
ITEM FOR INSPECTION SUBCON. CSO PERTAMINA Remarks
No.

1 Check the validity of the calibration certificate of the OTDR machine.

Check that a long launch lead cable is used. This will allow the OTDR to settle Note. 1
2 down after the initial pulse and provides a reference cable for testing the first
connector on the cable.
Check that the each end face of connector of the test cables is clean and free
3
from dirt prior to plug- in.

Ensure that a launch lead cable is used to enable full

4
evaluation of the path

5 Ensure to use correct mating adapter and fiber connector (where applicable).

Ensure that the Fiber optic cable has no active or

6
power light source connected on either end, before connecting the OTDR.

Ensure that the set-up of OTDR is not set to auto- configuration options enabled;
7
else OTDR will struggle with the configuration of the FFT sensor.

Ensure that all testing on the Micro strain systems is performed at 1550 nm with
8
fiber refractive index of 1.4682.

Ensure the distance setting at the OTDR is set to a distance longer than the total
9
expected length of the cable.

Ensure to set the pulse width setting as necessary to slightly increase the pulse
10
width to allow for the excess losses from the start and end sensors.

Ensure to test the Fiber Optic cable in both directions, first from the lead-in, then
11
from the lead- out.

Check that the fiber loss result meets the recommended typical reading of
12
0.25dB/km and an increase margin of 0.02dB/Km is acceptable.

13 Check that the fusion splices losses must be less than 0.05dB at a maximum.

14 Check that the connector loss must be less than 0.5dB at maximum.

15 Ensure to make record and or document in every test conducted.

NOTE:
1. Always start with the OTDR set for the shortest pulse width for best resolution and a range at least twice (2) times the length of the cable you are testing.
