Communication

Definition – The word communication is derived from the Latin word, ‘communicare’
which means ‘to share’. Communication is sharing, imparting or exchanging of information,
feelings, ideas etc. by speaking, writing, or using some other medium.

Types of Communication

Verbal Communication - Verbal communication is the most common type of


communication. It involves the use of spoken words or sign language to share information.
Verbal communication can either happen face to face or through other channels, such as
mobile phone, radio and video conferencing.

Non-Verbal Communication- Non-Verbal communication involves passive


communication through the use of gestures, tone of voice, body language and facial
expressions to share your thoughts and feelings. You can even communicate non-verbally by
the way you dress. Nonverbal communication often supports or adds to verbal
communication. For example, the tone of your voice and your posture can reveal your mood
or emotions.
Written Communication- Written communication is one of the best techniques of
communication, which is the act of writing, typing, and printing symbols to convey the
message to the audience. It is highly helpful because it records the information in written
form for reference. However, the information is generally shared through blogs, letters,
books, pamphlets, memos, emails, and more.

Visual Communication- Visual communication is one of the other forms of


communication that can be characterized as the preeminent helper of the organization. This
type of communication can be used to provide a heavy amount of information. It is highly
driven by social media platforms like YouTube, Instagram, and other digital platforms. In
simple terms, it uses drawings, photographs, charts, graphs, and sketches to convey
information.
Formal and Informal Communication
Formal communication is also known as official communication. The communication
follows a hierarchical chain of command which is established by the organisation itself. In
general, this type of communication is used exclusively in the workplace, and the employees
are bound to follow it while performing their duties. Examples of formal communication are -
business letters, reports, orders, memos, notices etc.

Types of Formal Communication


Vertical Communication: This kind of communication is held on various organizational
levels. In this, the message is passed from juniors to team members to the manager.
Horizontal Communication: This kind of communication takes place among the peers of
the same or different departments.
Diagonal Communication: This kind of communication takes place among the subordinates
working on different levels. For instance, a graphic designer communicating with the sales
manager.
Upward Communication: In this kind of communication, the information is transmitted
from lower to a higher level, i.e., from subordinates to superiors. This kind of communication
boosts the morale of the employees.
Downward Communication: In this kind of communication, the information is transferred
from higher to the lower level, i.e., from superiors to subordinates. Downward
communication is an effective way of communication.
Informal communication is also known as grapevine communication. This type of
communication moves freely in all directions, and thus, it is very quick and rapid. In any
organization, this type of communication is very natural as people interact with each other
about their professional life, personal life. Examples of informal communication are face-to-
face communication, telephonic conversations, gossip, text message, SMS, WhatsApp
etc.

Types of Informal Communication


Single Strand Chain: The communication in which one person tell something to another,
who again says something to some other person and the process goes on.

Cluster Chain: The communication in which one person tells something to some of its most
trusted people, and then they tell them to their trustworthy friends and the communication
continues.

Probability Chain: The communication happens when a person randomly chooses some
persons to pass on the information which is of little interest but not important.
Gossip Chain: The communication starts when a person tells something to a group of people,
and then they pass on the information to some more people and in this way the information is
passed on to everyone.
