LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
Goals and objectives provide the foundation for measurement. Goals are outcome statements that
define what an organization is trying to accomplish, both programmatically and organizationally.
Goals are usually a collection of related programs, a reflection of major actions of the organization,
and provide rallying points for manager.
Relational work skills are the term used to describe the ways in which professionals interact with
each other. Relational skills go beyond knowledge of organization models and professional
experience to include personal traits. As with professional skills, relational skills differ from person
to person. The skills possess make uniquely qualified for work- related tasks and responsibilities
Patience
- Is a work skill that is valuable when it comes to dealing with picky or difficult clients, complex
long term projects or colleagues who are slow and hard to keep on task.
Trustworthiness
- Trustworthy workers not only feel comfortable with the individual’s honesty and ethical values,
but believe they will do what they say when they say they will do it.
Empathy
- Being able to consistently look at and understand the perspective of others is a relational skill
that’s highly valued in service arena. This type of worker is able to put him in another position
and perform professional responsibilities wit what mind- set in place
Reliability
- When people know they can count on anyone, they become known as an important team
player.
Influence
- Having the ability to effectively persuade and influence others is a valuable realational
workplace skill, particularly as it pertains to sales and marketing positions. This type of skilled
negotiator is also good at crafting deals and developing solid contract agreement terms.
Interpersonal refers to relationships or actions that take place between two or more people while
“intrapersonal” refers to things that go on exclusively within one person. An interpersonal
relationship is a strong, deep, or close association or acquaintance between two or more people
that may range in duration from brief to enduring. This association may be based in inference, love,
solidarity, regular business interactions, or some other type of social commitment. Interpersonal
relationships are formed in the context of social , cultural and other influences. The context can vary
from family or kinship relations, friendship, and marriage, relations with associates, work, clubs,
neighborhoods, and places of worship.
In order to effectively manage the work of others, managers need to be recognized, focused and
skilled. Most managers serve as role models and have a significant influence on the work culture and
patterns of behavior.
Be positive role model in the workplace in your personal work planning and organization
Make sure that your personal work goals, plans and activities reflect the organization’s plans,
and your own responsibilities and accountabilities.
Take initiative to prioritize and facilitate competing demands to achieve personal, team and
organizational goals and objectives
Use technology efficiently and effectively to manage work priorities and commitments
Assess your personal knowledge and skills against competency standards to determine what
you need to develop in, what your priorities should be.
Training presents a prime opportunity to expand the knowledge base of all employees, but many
employers find the development opportunities expensive. Employees also miss out on work time
while attending training sessions, which may delay the completion of projects. Despite the potential
drawbacks, training and development provides both the company as a whole and the individual
employed with benefits that make the cost and time a worthwhile investment.
