Syllabus

This 3 sentence summary provides the essential information about the Algebra 1 course syllabus: The Algebra 1 course will cover operations with integers and rational numbers, solving equations and inequalities, polynomials, factoring, functions and graphs, systems of equations, quadratics, radicals and rational expressions. Students will be evaluated based on quizzes, tests, homework, and classwork, and grades will be determined by calculating points earned divided by total points possible. The syllabus outlines expectations for class conduct, calculator and textbook use, homework policies, grading scale, and requires signatures from students and parents acknowledging the course requirements.

Text: Algebra 1 With CalcChat and CalCview: Student Edition, Big Deals Learning

Course Description and Objectives:

The main topics to be covered during the year include a review of operations with
integers and rational numbers, solving first and second degree equations and inequalities, word
problem applications, polynomials, factoring, functions and graphs, systems of equations,
quadratics, radicals and rational expressions.
The goals of the course include: 1) developing an understanding of “why” certain math
strategies are used and not just “when” and “how” they are used, and 2) to develop the
student’s ability to organize their thoughts and problem solving process in written form. A
variety of teaching strategies will be used including cooperative learning groups, discovery
activities, and interdisciplinary activities.

Materials:
Supplies needed for this course include:

1. School-issued laptop (charged each period)

2. 5 section Spiral notebook 5
3. Pencils for notes and assignments.
4. Graph paper booklet

Calculator Use:
Students will be using calculators at appropriate times during the year. The teacher will
explain their appropriate use as topics are presented. Any scientific calculator will be adequate
for this year’s course.

Absences and Make-ups:

When a student is absent, they are expected to obtain the assignment(s) by checking
myCOMPASS. Please refer to the Student Handbook for additional information pertinent to
making up missed work.

Extra Help:
Students are encouraged to seek extra help when they feel it is needed. The extra help
schedule will be posted on the myCOMPASS class bulletin board.

Classroom Rules and Behavior:
Students are expected to conduct themselves in accordance with the ideals set forth in
Paul Ransom’s letter and the Everglades Creed, and to abide by the Honor Code and all rules set
forth in the Student Handbook. Specific expectations for classroom and online conduct will be
posted on the class myCOMPASS bulletin board.

Homework:
Homework will be assigned each class, with few exceptions, and should be considered
necessary practice of the concepts presented in class. It should be done neatly, in pencil or
with the stylus on the school-issued laptop, with all work shown. Students may seek outside
help on their assignments (though simply copying another’s work is NOT permitted and is a
violation of the Honor Code). Students are encouraged to check their answers to odd-
numbered problems with those in the back of the text. Incomplete or missing assignments will
lower the student’s homework grade and may be reflected in the student’s effort grade.

Evaluation and Grading:

Students will be evaluated based on their performance on quizzes, tests, cumulative
assessments, homework, and classwork/participation. There may also be projects during the
year.
There will typically be one quiz or test per week. Quizzes and tests may contain
questions pertaining to anything already studied.
Toward the end of each semester, students may take a cumulative test or culminating
assessment on the topics covered that semester.
The student’s grade will be determined by dividing the total number of points earned by
the total number of points possible. Each test will be worth approximately 50-100 points, each
quiz approximately 20-35 points, homework approximately 10 points per week, and
classwork/participation approximately 5 points per week.

Grading scale: 97-100 = A+ 93-96 = A 90-92 = A-

87- 89 = B+ 83-86 = B 80-82 = B-
77-79 = C+ 73-76 = C 70-72 = C-
67-69 = D+ 63-66 = D 60-62 = D-
59 and below = F
