Concept of Engginering Mechanics

This chapter introduces the concepts of engineering mechanics, which studies the effects of forces on bodies at rest or in motion. It identifies four main branches: statics examines rigid bodies at rest; strength of materials analyzes deformation of materials under loads; dynamics investigates moving systems through kinematics and kinetics; and machine dynamics looks at dynamic forces and motion in machines. The topic aims to define mechanics, discuss the branches of engineering mechanics, and explain its importance to agricultural and biosystems engineering.

Engineering Mechanics

Topic: Introduction

This chapter introduces the basic concepts of engineering mechanics. It also discusses its
different branches.

Learning Objectives:
After this topic, students should be able to:
1. Define Mechanics and engineering mechanics.
2. Identify the different branches of Engineering mechanics.
3. Discuss the importance of Engineering mechanics to Agricultural and Biosystems
Engineering.

Mechanics – it is a branch of science dealing with the effect of forces on bodies.

Engineering Mechanics – It is a basic engineering discipline which describes the motions of
bodies and the forces associated with these motions.
- It also investigates the equilibrium of forces as well as the resulting
components’ stresses and deformations.
Statics is a branch of mechanics which studies the effects and distribution of forces of rigid bodies
which are and remain at rest.
- In this area of mechanics, the body in which forces are acting is assumed to be
rigid.

Topics in Statics:

- Resultant of Force System

- Equilibrium of Force System
- Analysis of Trusses
- Cables
- Friction
- Centroids and Centers of Mass
- Moments of Inertia

Strength of materials
Strength of materials deals with the deformation of elastic systems under loads such as pressure,
tension, bending, torsion, and shearing as well as calculating the resulting stress states.

Dynamics (kinematics and kinetics)

Dynamics investigates moving systems. Kinematics deals with motion sequences without enquiring
into the cause of motion. Kinetics looks at the motion of rigid bodies under the action of forces.

Machine dynamics
Building on the fundamentals of engineering mechanics, machine dynamics deals with the
interaction between dynamic forces and motion quantities in machines.
