PRACTICE EXERCISES ON PASSIVE CONSTRUCTION

A Write passive sentences from the words in brackets. All sentences are present.

1. (all these computers / scan / every day). All these computers are scanned everyday
2. (All shipments / deliver / on Thursdays). All shipments are delivered on Thursdays
3. (this processor / make / of silicon). This processor is made of silicon
4. (this computer / not use / very often). This computer is not used very often
5. (how often / these printers / cleaned?). How often are these printers cleaned?

7. (all the resources / share / with the other PCs). All the resources are shared with the other PCs
8. (the transfer rate / check / automatically). The transfer rate is automatically checked

B Write passive sentences from the words in brackets. All sentences are past

1. (the office / clean / yesterday). The office was cleaned yesterday.


2. (how / those printers / break?). How were those printers broken?
3. (when / this building / build?). When was this building built?
4. (Mrs. Graham / invite / to the meeting last week). Mrs Graham was invited to the meeting last week.
5. (all our computers / repair / in PC Store). All our computers were repaired in PC store.
6. They are making these cables using copper. These cables are being made of copper.
7 The technician is wiring the new building. The new building is being wired by the technician.
8. They had cut all the communication lines. All the communication lines had been cut.
9. The modem converts the signals before sending them. The signals are converted by the modem before being
sent by it.
10. They send current through the electrolyte during electrolysis. Current is sent through the electrolyte during
electrolysis.

C Transform the following active sentences into passive.

1. In case of doubts you must contact the Internet Service Provider. In case of doubts, the Internet Service must
be contacted.
2. You can download new updates from the Internet. New updates can be downloaded from the Internet.
3. In order to install this plug-in you must disable the antivirus. The antivirus must be disabled in order to
install that plug-in.
4. Before installation you should unplug the power cord. Before installation, the power chord should be
unplugged.
5. You must enable the ‘Automatic Detection’ option. The “Automatic Detection” option must be enables.
6 We use different Internet browsers. Internet Browsers used by us are different.
7 My boss wrote an e-mail of confirmation. An e-mail of confirmation was written by my boss.
8. Someone uses my computer. My computer is used.
9. In this computer store they don’t accept credit cards. Credit cards are not accepted in this computer store.
10. People wash CDs with soap and water. CDs are washed with soap and water.
