SECRETARIAT
OF
THE TECHNICAL STANDARDISATION COMMITTEE (FOOD STUFFS)
(DIRECTORATE GENERAL OF SUPPLIES AND TRANSPORT)
DEFENCE FOOD SPECIFICATION 2020

REVISED SPECIFICATION NO 531 :IODIZED SALT

1. The salt iodised shall be of good quality, with its characteristic taste, free flowing,
white, clean and free from substances injurious to health.

2. Refined Iodized salt is solar/rock salt from which soluble and insoluble impurities are
reduced by employing mechanical washing, centrifuging and iodizing, drying sieving,
coating with permitted anticaking agents as prescribed under the FSSAI Rules. It shall be
free from visible contamination with clay, grit or other extraneous adulterants or impurities.

OR

Vacuum evaporated iodized salt is made by evaporating brine employing forced

evaporators operating under vacuum, centrifuging iodizing, drying and coating with
permitted anticaking agents as permitted under the FSSAI Rules,. It shall be free from
visible contamination with clay, grit or other extraneous adulterants or impurities.

3. The material may contain anticaking agents as permitted under the FSSAI Rules,
subject to a maximum 02 percent by mass, either singly or in combination. Further, when
calcium, potassium or sodium ferrocyanide are used as crystal modifiers and anticaking
agents, their quantity should not exceed 10 mg/kg, on dry basis, either singly or in
combination expressed as ferrocyanide when tested by the method prescribed in Indian
Standard IS 7224 : 2006(or revisions there to).

4. When dissolved in water, it shall produce a clear solution containing not more than a
trace of sediment.

Packing

5. The salt shall be packed in 01 Kg / 02 Kg / 05 Kg LLDPE bags made from 350 gauge
Biaxially oriented polypropylene (BOPP/LLDPE) film of food grade quality.

on one side of each food grade poly bag:-
(a) Product(Salt iodized)in characters of suitable size.
(b) Brand name.
(c) Name of the Manufacturer.
(d) Nett weight.
(e) Date of Manufacture.
(f) Lot No/Batch No.

Inspection

7. An inspection shall be carried out by the Director of Supplies and Transport (or an officer
acting on his behalf) on all supplies tendered for acceptance. The decision of this officer shall be
final.
8. Particle Size. For refined iodized salt,minimum95 percent of the material shall pass
through 01 mm IS sieve and not more than 10 percent by mass shall pass through 150
micron IS sieve.
9. The salt iodised shall conform to the following analytical parameters, when dried in
accordance with the method prescribed in annex A:-
(a) Moisture, percent by mass, Max - 0.5
(b) Water insoluble matter, percent by mass, on - 1.0
dry basis,max
(c) Chloride content (as NaCI), percent by mass, - 98.5 on dry
basis, Min
(d) Matter soluble in water other than sodium chloride, - 1.0 percent by
mass, on dry basis, Max
(e) Calcium (as Ca), percent by mass, on dry - 0.15
basis, Max
(f) Magnesium (as mg), percent by mass, on dry - 0.10

Annexure ‘A’
(Ref Para 9)

DETERMINATION OF MOISTURE CONTENT

1. Procedure

(a) Grind rapidly the sample material as received (say 100 gm), if required, in an
agate mortar approximately to a size of 2.8 mm IS Sieve, but do not actually sieve.
The material which shall be in the form of powder shall be kept in an air- tight
container.

(b) Weigh accurately about 20 g of the material in a weighing bottle (about 30 ml

capacity), preferably wide mouth squat type, previously dried and weighed. Dry in an
oven at 140 to 150˚C for at least 4 h. Cool ina desiccators and weigh. Repeat
drying, cooling and weighing until constant mass is obtained.

2. Calculation

Moisture, percent by mass = M1 – M2 x 100

M1

Where

M1 = mass in g of the material taken for the test, and

M2 = mass in g of the material after drying in the oven.
