underlying concept of globalization explained in the article.

The New Globalization

By: Cielito F. Habito (Inquirer.net)

The article describes globalization as a process since it addresses the former and current
technological advances made in transportation dating back to 19th century until now. This process made
it easier for everyone to move from one place to another and to transport goods using steamships and
railways to and from different regions leading to a rise in cross-border trade. After the World War II in
1945, innovations for transportation have been made again that further broadened trades across the
world using land, sea, and air transport thus improving trading goods. As people from different countries
continued to work together, they witnessed an increase in world trade leading to the establishment of
World Trade Organization, a coordinated global financial system that marked globalization. As the
globalization goes on, governments from certain countries started to be alarmed by how fast information
spreads out. Their efforts in blocking citizens to information have become inevitable because of the widely
available access to internet and social media platforms. Aside from the benefits of easier transport and
access to information, I am pleased to be informed that after such a long process driven by international
trade, investment and aiding by information technology, lives of the people greatly improved due to a
myriad job opening coming from various businesses. This opinion editorial recounted how the lives of
Filipinos have greatly improved due to the opportunities that they were presented with, that come from
globalization. As for that reason, Filipinos now can obtain a variety of inexpensive products that they need
for their basic needs. This article corroborates the definition of globalization as a process by describing
the growing technological improvements that have been made throughout history and how it affected
the multitude.

Political globalization refers to the amount of political co-operation that exists between different
countries. This ties in with the belief that “umbrella” global organizations are better placed than individual
states to prevent conflict. The League of Nations established after WW1 was certainly one of the pioneers
in this. Since then, global organizations such as the World Trade Organization (WTO), United Nations (UN),
and more regional organizations such as the EU have helped to increase the degree of political
globalization.

Social globalization refers to the sharing of ideas and information between and through different
countries. In today’s world, the Internet and social media is at the heart of this. Good examples of social
globalization could include internationally popular films, books and TV series. The Harry Potter/ Twilight
films and books have been successful all over the world, making the characters featured globally
recognizable. However, this cultural flow tends to flow from the center (i.e. from developed countries
such as the USA to less developed countries). Social globalization is often criticized for eroding cultural
differences.

Economic globalization refers to the interconnectedness of economies through trade and the exchange
of resources. Effectively, therefore, no national economy really operates in isolation, which means
national economies influence each other. This is clearly evidenced by global recession from 2007 onwards.
Economic globalization also means that there is a two-way structure for technologies and resources. For
example countries like the USA will sell their technologies to countries, which lack these, and natural
resources from developing countries are sold to the developed countries that need them.
