IMPACT OF USING SOCIAL MEDIA TO THE ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE

OF GRADE 12 STUDENTS OF VITO NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL

Chapter 1

Introduction

Students are most essential asset for any educational instinct. The students
performance (academic achievement) plays and important role in producing the best
quality graduates who will become great leaders and man power. The use of social
media sites have exploded and involved into an online platform where people create
content, share it, bookmark it and network at a prodigious rate. Social networking has
become a common international trend which has spread across almost every corner of
the world, the internet today is world wide. The internet also known as a global system
of computer networking and information. Social media is started when people start to
communicate. Social means human society, as interference of people and the groups
and word media is the medium of expressions. Most of the forms of social media are not
digital. It generations a large number of innovations and social is one of the biggest
inventions of technology, which is now most popular and widely used. We define social
media as technologies that made social communication easy and enable discussions
among it participants. While in our study, the word social media means a web-best
mobile application that allows people or companies to make, interact with, and share
new user-generated or current materialman digital environment. Students are
consumers and producers of media.

Background of the study

Mobile applications are a significant part of our lives, especially the applications that
help solve particular problems at certain stages of our lives or those that are the very
object of our work. In the field of education, mobile applications have been integrated in
the teaching of lessons or in the transmission of information. Various applications on the
market have been largely adopted for the information transmission from the educational
environment. Social Media is one of these applications, and in this article we aim to
analyze the advantages and disadvantages of using this application in the educational
environment. At the same time, the effects of the heavy use of this application by
students are analyzed and also inadequate situations to be avoided in the use of the
application are highlighted.
Currently, social media are some of the first means of communication and interaction in
the world, blossoming enormously in the recent years, in addition getting diversified
both in number and in terms of the functions they possess. Each social network has a
special character and exhibits common and yet unique functions. The use of social
networks in the field of education implies one of the measures accessible to pupils,
students, teachers, that have been adopted as a fragment within the life of each of us.
From an educational point of view, these can be seen as a simple educational tool,
designed to transmit different types of media content among the users, offering within
them various functions, in order to facilitate communication, such as text messaging,
multimedia messaging, user account creation, possibility to create groups. Thus, the
information transmission is simplified by a few clicks, but also by the speed with which
the information is conveyed to the users. Since the occurrence of the social media, they
have been surrounded by various pros and cons about their existence and the benefits
and risks they present.

Statement of the Problem

CHAPTER 2.Review of Related Literature

2.1 Related Literature

According to Junco al et (2010), social media are a collection of internet websites,
services, and practices that
support collaboration, community building, participation, and sharing”. The growing
dimension of the use of
social media among the youth of today cannot be over emphasized. Over the years,
social networking among
second cycle students has become more and more popular. It is a way to make
connection not only on campus,
but with friends outside of school. Social networking is a way that helps many people
feels as though they
belong to a community. Due to the increased popularity of it, economists and professors
are questioning whether
grades of students are not being affected by how much time is spend on these sites
(Chaney, 2010).
According to Lennart et al., (2010), about 57% of social network users are 18-29 years
old and have a
personal profile on multiple social media websites. In a study by Pempek, Yermolayeva,
and Calvert (2009), the
amount of time spent daily on social network sites varied greatly. However, an analysis
of the data indicated
most participants spent approximately thirty minutes a day socializing, mostly during the
evening hours between
9p.m to 12a.m students spent an average of forty seven minutes a day on Facebook.
More than 50% of college
students go on a social networking sites several times a day (Sheldon, 2008). Quan-
Haase and Young (2010),
found that 82% of college students reported logging into Facebook several times a day.
Younger students tended
to use Facebook more frequently than older students to keep in touch with friends from
high school or from their
hometown (Pempek et al., 2009)
Many researchers such as Choney (2010), San Miguel (2009) and Enriquez (2010)
studies on students’
use of the social media sites revealed a negative effect of the use of social media sites
on students’ academic
performance. Nielsen Media Research study conducted in June 2010 stated that almost
25% of students’ time on
the internet is spent on social networking sites (Jacobsen & Forste 2011).The American
Educational Research
Association conducted a research and declared at its annual conference in San Diego
California (2009), that
social media users study less and generate lower grade (Abaleta et al, 2014).
San Miguel (2009), focused on the relationship between time spent on Facebook and
the academic
performance of students. The overall findings indicated “more time on Facebook equals
slightly lower grades”.
In his study, the average facebook user had a GPA of 3.0 to 3.5, while the non facebook
user had a GPA of 3.5 -
4.0. Also, the average facebook user study for 1 – 5 hours per week, while the non
facebook user would study 11
– 15 hours per week Enriquez (2010), revealed that students who multi-task between
social networking sites and
home work are likely to have 20% lower grades than a student who does not have a
social networking site. He
believes that even running a social networking site on the background on a student’s
PC while studying or doing
homework could lower a student’s grade. He believes that “the problem is that most
people have Facebook or
other social networking sites, their e-mails and may be instant messaging constantly
running in the background
while they are carrying out their tasks” Choney (2010), in looking at the time spend on
facebook and its effect on
academic performance said a user of Facebook has an average “GPA of 3.06, while
non users have an average
GPA of 3.82”.
Furthermore, a study conducted by Karpinski and Duberstein (2009), of Ohio Dominican
university
on college students who use social network have significantly lower grade point
averages (GPAs) than those
who do not. They also mentioned that among various unique distractions of every single
generation, Facebook
remains a major distraction of current generation. According to Khan (2009), facebook
users often time
experience poor performance academically. Similarly, Englander et al., (2010), posit
that social media is
negatively associated with academic performance of student and is a lot more
momentous than its advantages.
Internet addiction consequently gave rise to internet usage within the last couple
decades. Nalwa and Anand
(2008), recommended that addicted users prefer using internet setting back their
personal and responsibilities
which ultimately leads to poor academic performance.
According to Kubey et al., (2010), impairment of educational performance and internet
dependency
are correlated by utilizing synchronous communication programme including internet
sites and forums. Jocabsen
and Forste (2011), found a negative relationship between the use of various media,
including mobile phones, and
self-reported GPA among first year university students in the United States. In Taiwan,
Yen at el. (2009),
identified an association between mobile phone use and respondents and report that
respondents have allowed
phone use to interfere with their academic activities. Similarly, Hong et al. (2012),
reported that daily use of
mobile phones is correlated with self-reported measure of academic difficulty among a
sample of Taiwanese
university students. In a survey of Spanish high school students Sanchez-Martinz and
Otero (2009), found a
correlation between “intensive” mobile phone use and school failure.
However, other studies like Ahmed and Qazi (2011), Hanqittai and Hsich (2010), Pasek
and Hanqittai
(2009), conducted on the same topic revealed no correlation between social media and
students’ academic
performance. A study conducted at Whittemore school of Business and Economic on
one thousand, one hundred
and twenty seven students revealed that there is no correlation between how much time
is spent on social
networking sites and grades (Martin, 2009). Again, University of New Hampshire (2010)
study also revealed
that students’ use of social media sites do not affect grades.
A recent survey showed that approximately ninety percent of teens in the United States
have Internet
access, and about seventy-five percent of these teens use the Internet more than once
per day (Kist, 2008). This
study also showed that approximately half of all teens who have Internet access are
also members of social
networking sites, and use the Internet to make plans and socialize with friends (Kist,
2008). In September 2005,
out of the total adult internet users (18-29 years) 16% were using social networking si

In the new normal learning system, students learn and study by using a medium which they also use for
browsing social media platforms. The aim of this research is to know if the students use of social media
platform affects their academic performance in the new normal learning system. The answer to this
study might be helpful for development new learning methods that will be affective in the new normal
setting. To find the answer, researchers used a sample size of 53 students in a private school in the City
of Marilao,Bulacan during the school year 2020-2021.The primary data gathering tool used in the study
was a standardize questionnaire Social Media and Academic Performance Questionnaire adapted from
Peter Osharive (2015) on determining the effects of social media platform on students academic
performance. The data collected were analyzed and treated statistically. Results showed that the social
media platform helpful as it improved their reading and communication skills, while some students find
social media platform a distraction from their studies. The researchers, therefore conclude that the
result of this study only show that students handle their social media platforms in different ways. It is in
their hands if they will let their usage of social media platforms affect their academic way. This led the
researchers to recommend schools to teach students the importance of time management and
balancing school works and other things.

Multidisciplinary Research 1(1),2019
This research examines the relationship between social media and their effects on the
academic performance of the students. Social media is the most recent form of media
among students in this generation. It is also the cheapest fast access to the world of
communication and socialization. Many students are always logging in to their account
on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc. as a part of their everyday activities and routine.
The researchers utilized the quantitative interval method and descriptive research
design through the utilization of questionnaires, unstructured interviews and focused-
group discussions to 40 ICT senior high students at Bestlink College of the Philippines.
The questionnaires are related to the current issues, reasons, and effects of using
social media among the senior high students. The ICT senior high students who
participated in our survey have assessed the factors affecting their studies in terms of
psychological, mentally, physically, and socially problems. The things needed to be
done to reduce the effects is to lessen the usage of gadgets and social media, to
develop time management, to focus on extra-curricular activities, and to maintain proper
guidance from their teachers, guidance counselor, and, most of all, their parents. The
results demonstrated the usefulness and side-effects of using social media to the ICT
senior high students at Bestlink College of the Philippines. The school organization and
teachers must implement the rules regarding the reduced use of social media within the
school grounds and classrooms during discussions and activities. These may help
enhance the academic performance of the students.

2.3 Relationship of the Previous Studies to the Present study

The previous studies was related to this present study in a way that both studies aims to
explore and determine the impacts or influence of social media to the academic
performance of the students. However, in this present study, the focus was to determine
the impacts, specifically to the grade 12 students of Vito National High School. The
previous and present study focus on how engaging in social media may impact or
influence the performance of the students in school acad. We can’t deny that the social
media greatly affects the learning of the students. That’s why both of the study including
the previous and present study explore or understands the effect of social media to the
academic performance of the students.

Chapter 3.Research Methodology

Research design

The study was conducted as a qualitative research requires data analysis of data
gathered using information gathering methods such as interviews, document analysis,
and participation observation In this study, the influence of social media to the academic
performance of Senior high school learners we’re analyzed the type of qualitative
research designed that is utilized by the researchers is the case study. Case study was
used in order to know on why the younger generation are seemingly getting too
obsessed with the number of social media likes and followers. Case study is a
qualitative strategy in which the researcher identifies in depth program, event activities,
process or one or more individually.
The cases are bounced by time and activity and researchers collect detailed information
using a variety of data collection procedures over a sustained period (Creswell,2009).A
case study that allows them to do an in-depth analysis of people, relationships and
events, bounded by one factor. The researcher believe that this design is appropriate
for the research study because it will allow them to further understand the reason of the
respondent in this study. This researcher think that a case study is heavily appropriate
in this research study so that it'll be easier to gather important data and will be further
effective for the research study.

Data Collection Techniques

The method qualitative research study focused on in order to collect its data, was
questionnaires. Survey questionnaires was distributed to the selected respondents. In
order to gather relevant data. The researchers also obtained the information from the
interview answered by 7 females and 3 males of grade 12 students. The survey
questionnaires were retrieved after they were finished answering.
