OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH AND SAFETY (OHS)

- Planned system of working to prevent illness and injury by recognizing and identifying
hazards and risks.
OHS STANDARD
- Each student has a responsibility to their colleagues and their organization to report and
act upon any potential workplace hazard.
HAZARD
- Anything that can cause harm.
RISK
- Possibility of something bad might happen.

OHS Ideas on Policies (Procedure)

1. Identify the hazard
2. Clear the area close to the hazard
3. Partition the hazard offer clearly identifies the area to protect the other people from
harm.
4. If the hazard is easily and safely cleared, do so
5. Report the hazard to the appropriate person to obtain assistance
6. Fill out the correct documentation to assist in identifying improved practice to reduce
further incidence of hazards.

3 STEPS TO MANAGE HEALTH AND SAFETY AT WORK

1. Spot the hazard (hazard identification)
2. Assess the risk (risk assessment)
3. Risk control (make the changes)

Accident reports
Forms are used to give specific details with regards to the accidents that happened in
the laboratory during experiments or activities.
● Name of the person injured
● Date and Time of the accident
● Type of injury
● First aid given
● Action taken to prevent further accident

Physical Hazard
Hazard - cables running across the floor
Risk - trips, falls, and hurts himself
Who is Responsible? You, your employer, or your customer has a serious legal negligence
problem

Temporarily run a cable across the floor

-place Danger sign
-via Gaffer’s tape

Other Common Physical Hazards

● Leaving tools on top of ladder
● Placing electronic equipment in precarious positions or on support that is not
sturdy enough or not designed for holding electronic equipment

Mechanical Hazard
● You might stick your hand in printer
● You might move your hand past a computer chassis
● Razor sharp edges of a machine
● When working on electronic equipment tools(?) take the possibility of being hurt
by: moving parts, hot components, sharp edges

Chemical Hazard
Chemical used with the electronic equipment
● Display cleaning chemicals
● ehrm wala em notes dito

Chemicals can be harmful if accidentally:

● Swallowed
● Get on bare skin or eyes
Always read the warnings and instructions of the label.
Link and toner can stain skin.

jinsin
Electrical Hazard
Voltages inside computers and electronic equipment.

DCV - Direct Current Voltage

-range of voltages from 33 volts to 25 volts
-most of which are harmless
ACV - Alternating Current Voltage
-Power supply, you will find a line voltage of 220 volts.
ESD - Electrostatic Discharge
-wala em notes :)

Fire Safety Guidelines

● Know the location of fire extinguishers
● Find an escape route
● Know how to contact emergency services —
● Keep the workplace clean
● Keep most solvents in a separate area

CSS TOOLS
Proper Tool Selection
● A tool is a handheld device that aids in accomplishing a tool.
● Tools range from a traditional metal cutting part of a machine to elements of a
computer program that activates and controls a particular function.

1. Know and understand in detail the scope of work to be accomplished

2. Plan for the sequence of tasks
3. Selecting the best tool for each task
a. Requires training in the proper use of the tools
b. Field experience in their safe use, and
c. Following the manufacturers’ instructions for that specific tool.
4. When obtaining the tool
a. Include all the associated tooling and consumable parts, recommended
by the manufacturer.

jinsin
b. Consumable parts must also be selected and used according to their
manufacturers’ instructions.

Safe Use of Tools

● Use the tool for the purpose of which it was designed
● Know that Do’s and Don'ts for your safety
● If there are set up/use options, operator, judgment must always be based on
what is the safest way to use the tool.

Environmental Safety and Health Program

● All tools be kept in good condition with regular maintenance
● The right tool can be used for the right job.
● Each tool be examined before use and damage or defective tools NOT to be used
● Tools are operated according to manufacturers’ instructions.
● The right protective equipment for the tool and activity be used.

Classification of Tools
- ESD tool - antistatic wrist wrap, antistatic mat
- Hand tool - flat head screwdriver, pliers
- Cleaning tool - eraser, paint brush
- Diagnostic tool - loopback adaptor, PCI diagnostic card
- Networking tool - wire stripper, LAN tester

HARDWARE TOOLS

ELECTRO-STATIC DISCHARGE (ESD) TOOLS

Static electricity is easily generated by friction on carpets, tile flooring, clothing, hair,
fabric, and etc. Grounded antistatic work mats used with antistatic wrist straps provide the most
basic means for the controlled discharge of electrostatic electricity.

jinsin
ESD Wrist Strap - An antistatic wrist strap is used to prevent ESD damage to

computer equipment

Anti-Static Mat - Used to prevent on or place hardware on to prevent static electricity

from building up.

Hex Driver - Sometimes called a nut driver, is used to tighten nuts in the same way that

a screwdriver tightens screws.

Hex Allen Wrench - An L-shaped hexagonal metal bar either end of which fits the

socket of a screw or bolt.

Needle-Nose Pliers/ Long-Nose Pliers - are used to hold small parts

Slip Joint Pliers - Used for clamping down on objects.

Diagonal Side cutting Pliers - Used to strip and cut wires

Tweezers - used to manipulate small parts.

Soldering Iron - Is a hand tool used in soldering. It supplies heat to melt the solder so

that it can flow into the joint between two work pieces (Hand tools)

-Used to joined two or more metals with the use of solder

De-soldering Tool - Used to remove solder and components from the circuit board.

Lint-free cloth - Used to clean different computer components without scratching or

leaving debris.

Brush (Cleaning Tools) - Used to clean different computer components without

scratching.

Compressed air (Cleaning Tools|) - Used to blow away dust and debris from different

computer parts without touching the components.

Cable ties (Cleaning Tools) - Used to bundle cables neatly inside and outside of a

computer.

Parts organizer (Cleaning Tools) - Used to hold screws, jumpers, fasteners and other

small parts and prevents them from getting mixed together.

jinsin
Multi-meter (Diagnostic Tool) - Used to test the integrity of circuits and the quality of

electricity in computer components.

Power Supply Tester (Diagnostic Tool) - Checks whether the computer power supply is

working properly.

Loopback Adapter - Used to test the functionality of computer ports.

Punch Down Tool (Hand Tools) - Used to terminate wire into patch panel.

Wire Stripper (Hand Tools) - Used to remove wire insulation.

Punch Down Tool W/ Wire Stripper (Hand Tools) - Combination of punch down tool

and wire stripper.

Crimping Tool (Hand Tools) - Used to attach connectors to wires

LAN Tester - Used to check the integrity of wiring connections.

Tool Kit - A set of tools designed to be used together or for a particular purpose.

Phillips Screwdriver - Used to loosen or tighten crosshead screws.

Part Retriever - used to retrieve parts from location that are too small for your hand to

fit.

Torx Screwdriver - used to loosen or tighten screws that have a starlike depression

on the top, a feature that is mainly found on laptop.

Flat Head Screwdriver - used to loosen or tighten slotted screws.
