INTRODUCTION

BACKGROUND OF THE PROJECT

Broiler chicken are raised for human consumption and bred for meat

production. Broiler chickens are bred to a uniform size specifically for meat product

(Maurer, 2003). It is harvested approximately 4-7 weeks for most broilers and are fed

with commercial feeds. Broiler chicken inventory is highest in Central Luzon with

34.97 million birds followed by Northern Mindanao with inventory of 25.49 million

birds as of March 2022 as reported by the Philippine Statistic Authority (PSA). There

is an increase in demand for food as well as protein source with the increasing

number of population in the country. To sustain nutritional needs, poultry raising is

done to supply the needs of the people for consumption. In the Municipality of

Alamada, the poultry meats are usually purchased from Davao City. Due to high

transportation cost and the unstoppable inflation of oil prices, it results to the higher

price of poultry meat in the market. Likewise, feeds are the most expensive input in

poultry production to reduce feed cost, supplementing banana meal and corn grits to

commercial feeds is introduce to birds. Banana and corn are locally produced crops,

it can contribute to lower price of feed cost in local farmer. Based on the study of

Duran and Oriol on 2021, corn with any variety has a significant effect observe in

weight gain of the broiler chicken. Furthermore, banana meal used as feeding

supplement has a positive effect on growth performance of the birds (Siyal, 2016).

This project is intended to meet the demand of customers in the market of

Kitacubong, Alamada, North Cotabato, and to contribute to the economy of the

Municipality.
This project aims to validate the growth performance of broiler chicken if it is

fed with banana meal and corn grits, produce chicken meat in the market and create

income in the locality.

LOCALE OF THE PROJECT

The project was conducted at Purok 5, Barangay Mirasol, Alamada, North

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

This project was conducted to test the efficacy on growth performance of

broiler chicken fed with commercial feeds as supplemented with banana meal and

corn grits.

LONG TERM PROJECT IMPACT

The achievement of this project will give knowledge and opportunity to small

backyard chicken raisers in the community. Furthermore, this project will help

improve production to sustain the needs of poultry meat and provide long term

employment for their own personal needs.

METHODOLOGY

Procurement of Birds

This project used 100 selected heads of live and healthy broiler chicks. The

source of birds were from Pilmico Midsayap.

Preparation of Poultry House

The poultry house was constructed using light materials such as bamboo,

round timber, fish net and tarpaulin as shown in Figure 1.a,b,c. The installation of

light bulbs was 25 watts/10 sq. ft., and the floor space was 6mx4m. The poultry

house has undergone a proper sanitation to ensure the safety of the birds by using

disinfectants one week prior to the arrival of the birds.

Preparation of Brooder and Broiler

The floor was covered with rice hull and cardboard box that served as poultry

litter material as shown in Figure 2.a,b. The day-old chicks was already be

vaccinated with B1-B1 vaccine prior to arrival. Upon the arrival of the birds, water

and electrolytes was provided to reduce stress.

Feeding Management
Integra 1000 equivalent to booster feeds was given to day-old birds up to fifth

teen (15) days of age. Integra 2000 was given as starter feeds within 16 to 25 days

of age, and Integra 3000 as finisher feeds supplemented with banana meal and corn

grits was given on the 26th day of age up to the 33rd day. Ad libitum feeding was

done to achieve desirable size and weight of the birds. The bird was fed with 75%

commercial feeds supplemented with 25% of banana meal and corn grits combined

as shown in Figure 3a.

banana meal
Care and Maintenance

To control the bird’s body temperature at extremely high or low ambient,

proper temperature was provided by using insulator for optimum health and growth.

Clean water was provided at all times to prevent dehydration and feed was always

available to ensure the growth and weight of the birds is desirable. Prolonged

storage of mixed feeds was avoided and it was protected from pests and moisture.

Chicken dung was collected every day to ensure cleanliness and safety of the birds

as shown in Figure 4.

Summary, Conclusion and Discussion

A study was conducted to determine the effect of commercial feeds

supplemented with banana meal and corn grits in terms of chicken production. The

study was conducted at Purok 5, Barangay Mirasol from August to December.

The result of the project shows that using commercial feeds supplemented

with banana meal and corn grits applied to broiler chicken will increase the weight

gain and growth performance. Adisa and Okey (2009) reported that inclusion of

banana pulp meal in broiler diets at the levels of 7.5, 15 and 22% led to improved

growth performance, the best result was obtained when banana pulp was included in

the ration at 22%. This result agreed with that obtained by Farman et al (2016) and

Abel fas et al (2015) who observed a significant improvement in total weight gain.

Therefore, supplementing banana meal and corn grits has positive effect on

broiler chicken.

Competences gained and learning experience

Raising the broiler chicken is not easy, but because of the experience we

have we have gained some knowledge in taking care of bird from day old up to

harvest. The actual broiler production is different from what you just see in the book

or in the video in the social media. Since brooding birds needs care and

maintenance to ensure they are healthy. In this group experiments are first difficult to

handle, group activity is not easy that everyone’s idea needs to be consulted so that

everyone will know and there is a good flow in the group activity, there understands.
We had learned that birds in the third week of age needs lower temperature to

reduce panting. It needs good ventilation so that air can pass through so that

elevated housing in small scale poultry farm is necessary. We had learned that ad

libitum feeding is not healthy to broiler it reduce their activity and can cause stroke to

the birds.

Impact to the field of Specialization

It help us gain more knowledge in livestock production, which is in the past

few years we never experience the raising of poultry specially the broiler chicken. It

gives us opportunity to decide what the best choice in the future farming.
