The Kickstarter campaign was a success but
many of the backers are still waiting for their
product due to a disagreement between Dust
Studio and Battlefront. There is no point to talk
about it for long, none of us know the full details
and it is for the parties involved in the disagree-
ment to find a solution.

However the talk on social media put a stop to

bringing back Dust chronicles. There was no
way we could cover the Babylon storyline as
people could not get hold of the campaign book
or the new models and everybody involved felt
that Zverograd had been covered in enough de-
tail for a while.

Now that things seem to be moving forward in

regard to Operation Babylon we started talking
about Dust chronicles again.

THE dust CHRONICLES TEAM
Giselle
As the personal assistant to Sigrid von Thaler, Giselle is no stranger
to strict deadlines and the consequences of failing to adhere to them.
For this reason she is the perfect person to be the Editor-in-chief of
Dust Chronicles. With a team as diverse as that of Chronicles a strong
person had to be put in charge and with Giselle we have that person.

What the team thinks of Giselle:

[Rosie] “It’s great fun to wind Giselle up and see her reaction. I often
make deliberate spelling miscakes just to get on her nerves.”*
[Helga] “I don’t think I have ever seen her sit still. The woman works
day and night, I think she must be Russian.”
[Bub] “GGRRRRR!!”

Rosie
The veteran of many battles including Operation Cyclone, Rosie
Donovan doesn’t panic easily. She is a top mechanic and can fix a
Pounder with nothing more than a screwdriver and hairclip. As part
of the Dust Chronicles team she looks after the creation of new units
and vehicles for use in friendly games. Rosie is hard at work creating
a new version of Rosie’s ScrapYard.

What the team thinks of Rosie:

[Helga] “A very good mechanic for an American.”
[Bub] “GGRRRRR!!”
[Giselle] “A good person but I wish she would tidy the office up
when she has finished fixing whatever Bub broke.
* and yes I know what you tried to do there and left the mistake in.”

Dee Dee
As the mascot of Dust Devils International she doesn’t have a lot of
spare time but still wanted to help out with Dust Chronicles. Dee Dee
can often be seen running round the office making sure everybody
has the correct images to go with the article they are working on.

What the team thinks of Dee Dee

[Rosie] “I don’t know how she does it but Dee Dee always has the
perfect picture to go with the text I write.”
[Helga] “She is red so that makes her ok in my book.”
[Giselle] “A good friend. I just wish she would be careful when she
turns round, twice she has swiped my cup of tea onto the floor with
her tail.”
[Bub] “GGRRRRR!!”

4
the dust chronicles team
Helga
Helga can be very stubborn and will not take no for an answer. No
surprise then that she is in charge of gathering together the latest
news and conducting interviews. Because she is the oldest member
of the team, the others call her Mother Russia but never to her face.

What the team thinks of Helga:

[Giselle] “She is a great addition to the team. It means I’m not the
only one who delivers before the deadline.”
[Rosie] “A very good mechanic for a Russian.” (Editor’s Note: “I’ll
leave it for now but next issue I want a better comment instead of a
bad attempt at a joke.”)
[Bub] “GGRRRRR!!”

Bub
A man of few words, actually just one word. Bub is a good listener
and helps out around the office with whatever needs doing.

What the team thinks of Bub:

[Giselle] “Nobody makes a cup of coffee like Bub.”
[Rosie] “Nice guy, just wish he wouldn’t break the printer so often.”
[Helga] “Am I the only one who realises Bub is a Zombie?”

OPERATION BABYLON
When the Operation Babylon Kickstarter pro-
jected ended it was fully funded and one stretch
goal after the other had been reached. It seemed
Babylon was a big success and the Dust com-
munity was looking forward to a large number
of new releases and the opportunity to take their
games into the desert. However not everything
has gone as expected.

The full details are only known to Dust Studio

and Battlefront but in short there was a disagree-
ment about the funds generated by the Kick-
starter campaign and this has caused delays with
fulfilment of the orders placed by the backers
of the campaign. Various rumours, theories and
opinions have been flying around social media.
There is no point for Dust Chronicles to get in-
volved and stir things up. It is up to the parties in-
volved to come to an agreement where the back-
ers receive what they paid for and the how and
why of the disagreement is for Dust Studio and
Battlefront to discuss and take further if they feel
it is necessary.
Update 99 – posted on the 20th of February 2015 on the Babylon Kickstarter page is a sign that a pos-
sible solution is on the horizon and we look forward to finding out how things progress from here.

Third-party mediation
We can report some positive progress this week. One of the Kickstarter backers, who happens to have
professional experience in dispute mediation, has offered his services to help reach a mutually agree-
able solution.
We at Battlefront have enthusiastically agreed to abide by and honour the mediation process. We have
said all along that this is the best way of achieving a fair, impartial result.
We understand Paolo has also expressed interest in the opportunity, and has approached William Yau,
the Dust Studio CEO, with a view to establishing Dust Studio’s commitment to this mediation process.
We are looking forward to their response so we can proceed with getting this sorted out.

This is good news as it looks like all parties involved are trying to work to get this resolved. We un-
derstand that a lot of people have backed the project and are eager to get their Babylon miniatures, lets
give this mediation a chance and not throw oil on the fire by posting angry comments on cocial media
(especially not aimed at other players of Dust).

On the 27th of February a further update was posted and we urge anybody who has backed the Kick-
starter project to check that update as it includes a list of people that Battlefront is trying to contact.

DUST EVOLUTION
It had long been rumoured that Dust would be
turned into a video game and in 2014 that seemed
to become reality. An ambitious Kickstarter was
started and what was shown impressed the com-
munity.

However the amount needed to fund the project

turned out to be out of reach and a difficult deci-
sion had to be made. On the 3rd of December
2014 Dust Evolution closed their Kickstarter and
posted this final update:
Hi Everyone,
It’s with a bittersweet solace that we announce we will be taking down the Kickstarter for now. We
want to thank all of our supporters and fans, both old school Dust fans and newcomers alike. We did
have great feedback both from within the Kickstarter, the numerous Facebook communities, our other
social feeds and other external sources. We are very grateful for that. There were some great ideas and
options that we are considering and you will be happy to know that we will be coming back in 2015.

For us the campaign was a success but we were too ambitious with the amount we wanted to raise so
we are going back to the drawing board on that end. You will hear from us soon as we are exploring
different avenues on how to proceed as there are even more ideas and opportunities to pursue for the
explosive World of Dust. Keep an eye on the Dust Evolution website as well as our Facebook page and
Twitter feed as we will keep all new announcements coming on there as well.
We welcome everyone to please spread the word on Dust for as it grows in all arenas it gives us a
greater community to enjoy and have fun with! Thank you and stay tuned.

The Dust Evolution Team.

DUST NOVEL PREVIEW
Andy Chambers is a British author and game designer,
best known for his work for Games Workshop. He worked
extensively on various Warhammer 40,000 rulebooks and
sourcebooks, and also authored mutliple fiction novels set
in the same universe.

In 2003 Andy Chambers joined Mongoose Publishing as

the Starship Troopers tabletop miniatures game. He Joined
Blizzard Entertainment in 2006 as their Creative Director,
with which he worked on StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty.
In May of 2012 Dust Warfare, written by Andy Chambers was released by Fantasy Flight Games.

Andy Chambers has written a number of novels and what follows is a short extract from the yet to be
released Dust novel that he wrote for Dust Studio.

tIPS FOR TRACKS
Soon there will be six variants of the SSU IS
Heavy Tank. Not only that but thanks to the
Captured Walkers rules published in Operation
Babylon the IS-48B Lavrentiy Beria is now also
available to Allied and Axis players. This means
a lot of people will have encountered the chal-
lenge of painting around and between the tracks
of these giant beasts of war.

Dust Veteran, Major Malfunction has come to

the rescue with a very handy picture tutorial on
how to remove the tracks from your model and
make painting that little bit easier.

Major Malfunction here with a modeling and

painting tip for all you SSU players with the IS-5
and IS-48 Heavy Tanks. The IS-5 (Mao Zedong/
Vladimir Lenin) and IS-48 (Lavrentiy Beria/Karl
Marx) tanks both share a common chassis and
something that all tanks have: tracks. The rub
here is that they are pre-assembled, and getting
a paint brush down in there with all those bogeys
and track retainers is a pain!

12
And what about all those burrs and sprue scars? What to do?!?

Why, pull the tracks off and paint ‘em

separately, of course. As a long time mod-
el builder, I was determined to figure out
just exactly how to accomplish this with-
out destroying the model. After a little
poking and prodding, it became apparent
that those tracks were not simply going
to unwrap, and there was no visible seam
where they were joined. Looking a little
closer it becomes clear: the tracks are one
piece! An amazing feat, actually, but there
it was. The drive wheels and idler wheels
both have teeth, but the teeth don’t go all
the way around and the wheels simply slip
into the track ends. This is where we will
attack.

And this is my weapon of choice. A double end-

ed spiky punch looking thing. It’s tough, doesn’t
flex and that 90 degree bends lets me get it in all
kinds of places.

Prying just so and the wheels come off pretty

easily.

13
tIPS FOR TRACKS
If you don’t have such a tool, you can use a
screwdriver or other tool from behind to pop the
wheels off.

After the drive/idler wheels are removed, you

just tug on the tracks enough to get the retain-
ing spikes out from behind the road wheels, and
work your way from one end to the other until
you can simply slip the entire track off.

“Voila!” as the fella said.

14
Work the track off the other side the same way and you now have nice easy access to paint the tracks
and clean up all those ugly sprue removal scabs that are all over the place.

Once painted simply reverse the procedure to

get the tracks back on. Don’t forget a spot of
glue on the idler/drive wheels to keep them on.

There you go, comrades. Now you can clean

up your models lines, get a nice paint job on
the tracks, and grind your enemies to dust
beneath your tanks.

Helga sat down and came up with some sugges-
tions for breathing new life into the old scenarios.

18
SCENARIO 1: RECON IN FORCE
This scenario is intended to get to grips with the
core rules of Dust Tactics. The briefing states
that each force consists of a single infantry unit
and a sigle walker taken from the box.

V2 SUGGESTIONS
Your Force:
Your force must consist of:
1x Infantry unit (no hero)
1x vehicle unit
The total points of your force can not be more
than 20 points.

The rules for ammo crates and tank traps can be

found on page 21 of the current Dust Tactics core
rule book.

Objective:
The objective for the scenario remains the same,
destroy all enemy forces before the end of turn 8.

SCENARIO 2: BRIDGE IN SIGHT

This scenario is more than just destroy the en-
emy. The attacker must make sure he has at least
a single model on the bridge at the end of the
game. With the increased movement in V2 this
has become a lot easier to achieve.

V2 SUGGESTIONS
Your Force:
Your force may consist of any units from your
collection but you are limited to a single hero.
The total of your force can not be more than 50
points.

The rules for ammo crates and tank traps can be

found on page 21 of the current Dust Tactics core
rule book.

Objective:
The attacking player must have at least one fig-
ure on the Defender deployment zone during turn
8 and perform a single “Doing Nothing” action
with that unit. At that moment the game ends.

Each issue of Dust Chronicles we will look back

something new. In the very first issue of Dust

now.

Will Anastyr be played on the table top or will it

use the tiles and squares system of Tactics?

Anastyr is not a game for now, but is one of the 3

With so many game systems that we as hobbyists
are interested in, it is no surprise that we some-
times overlook rules. I’m not talking about for-
getting the wording of rules or mixing up rules
between game systems (Smoke Screen does not
excist in Monopoly? Who knew?!)
What I’m talking about is rules or skills that are
tucked away in the back of books and don’t often
feature in the games we play.

mind is not to make the weapons to strong in an
attempt to compensate for the movement restric-
tions. As explained earlier these restrictions are
somewhat balanced out with the free attack.

By combining rules it is possible to create types

of Naval Units and there is no need to come up
with complete new rules not present in the game.
For example the Dust background tells of sub-
marines and by giving a vehicle with Naval Unit

Rulebook] you represent the unit diving below

Unit treats Deep Water as Open Space, but can-
not enter any other type of terrain. A Naval Unit
may take a free Attack Action immediately after
it performs a March Move Action. An eliminated
Naval Unit becomes Deep Water terrain.

When looking at the rule it seems very limiting

at first glance due to the movement restrictions.
Not many tables have large bodies of water as
terrain features so the use of Naval Units is hard
to see. However the free Attack Action means
