1. ITEM DEFINITION
The SAPLAS system is designed to provide individual protection for armored vehicles (ICVs, APCs)
against weapon systems that use laser illumination means. The system is designed for vehicles with
length between 6 and 8 meters.
The SAPLAS system :
- detects laser illumination, determines the direction and the type of the source of threat;
- makes discrimination between direct and reflected laser beams;
- gives an early warning about the danger, by displaying a specific icon and the direction of the
threat on the LCD display. In the same time the crew receives an acoustic warning signal;
- allows the commander to take appropriate self-protective measures: maneuvers and/or
smoke shield generation;
- provides the manual, semiautomatic and automatic launching of any type of grenade
(smoke-producing, thermal trap with aerosols of other types of grenades that are to be
developed), in a protection area in accordance with the vehicle requirements. The sensors
heads and the grenades are to be mounted on the same platform, with fixed relative angles
between them.
2. STRUCTURE
Functionally, a standard SAPLAS model 4C-26L-20G (4 sensors heads with 26 laser sensors and
control of up to 20 smoke grenades) system is composed of:
-2 pcs “Laser Sensor Heads” mounted on the vehicle hull. Each sensors head contains 6 laser
sensors mounted on the lateral side and 1 on the top;
-2 pcs “Laser Sensor Heads” mounted on the vehicle hull. Each sensors head contains 6 laser
sensors, mounted on the lateral side
-1 pc “Central Processing and Display Unit”;
-1 set of wiring harness.
- Laser sensors - provides the identification of illumination sources (single pulse or repetitive pulses up
to 40000 Hz) within the wavelength range of 500 to 2200 nm;
- Central Processing and Display Unit – CPDU- processes the digital data obtained from the sensors
heads, transmits the processed signals to the display and to the RS422 serial interface and also
provides the warning acoustic signal. Using a number of graphic symbols on the display can be
observed the type of the irradiation, the direction of the irradiation and the loading status of the smoke
grenade launchers. The CPDU allows that an appropriate smoke grenade to be automatically,
semiautomatically or manually launched in the irradiation direction, in order to obtain the maximum
masking effect. The information could be sent to a Battle Management System, if required.
Physically, the units mentioned above are disposed in the following 5 blocks: (see the picture)

- 4 sensor blocks
- central processing and display unit (CPDU)
The four sensor blocks are disposed on the hull; laser sensors are distributed inside these
blocks in order to provide 360° protection to the vehicle. Optional the sensors heads can be repositioned
on the vehicle hull function of the customer requirements.
The CPDU is mounted inside the vehicle.
