Ramos - Module 6 Activty
Activity #6
BSIT – 1A
1. Given the chance, which part of your body do you want to change? Why?
- If I had the chance to change a part of my body, it would be something that’s involved with my
face, which is my nose. There’s already been so many times where I feel extremely insecure about
it. I honestly feel that it’s really unattractive, the way that it’s structured and everything. I feel like
there could have been some way that my nose would’ve looked so much better as I grew up.
To add even more salt to the wound, I am pretty sure that each member in my family has good nose
structure. And that says a lot about my genes, but even though that’s the case, that really never
stopped me from still trying my best to look decent and keep up a good appearance, both in public
and private.
2. Which part of your body do you want to retain? Why?
- If I had to choose what part of my body I want to retain, I would say everything. Personally, I
think every part of my body, except the nose, are alright. Furthermore, I am pretty sure that my
body is very capable of doing a lot of things already. Moreover, I am still just a college student, and
there is still so much room for my body to be improved even further.
3. Discuss your own concept of beauty.
- For me, beauty is “quality”. What do I mean by this? First let us describe what quality is so we
have something to work on, on the way to my own concept of beauty. Quality is usually defined as
the “standard of something as measured against other things of a similar kind; the degree of
excellence of something”. Let’s take a smartphone for example, since pretty much most of us have
smartphones in today’s society, there are low-range, mid-range, and high-range smartphones in the
market. But let us also say that we are living a life that of an average person, who is in the middle
class; not rich but not poor either. If we had to choose a phone that is of quality, not too expensive,
but no too cheap either, we would most likely settle for a “mid-range” smartphone. It offers almost
the same functions of an expensive phone for an affordable price. Still, we have to take in account
the quality of this particular phone that we bought in order for us to be satisfied, is the design
good? And does it have good performance? These are just some characteristics that a good phone
has to possess for it to be called good or decent in quality. This can be very comparable to the
human body, some people have low and high standards when it comes to beauty. For you to be
called “beautiful”, most people will almost always look at someone’s appearance, but I really do not
blame them since someone’s appearance is the very thing that makes us attracted to them in the
first place. Nevertheless, in my opinion, we still have to consider what people are on the inside, in
order for them to be called “beautiful”, and I think beauty isn’t just what you are in terms of your
appearance.
4. A very alarming issue among young people today is depression. As a youth, how can you help lessen
or overcome the impact of depression?
- Personally, I would start making real friends, get them to talk to you often and let them comfort
you. It may not seem much, but it’s a very effective way to combat depression and its impact, that
is, if you have REAL friends. Some friends and friend groups really do not last that long in my
personal experience. I have succumbed into depression before and it really affected my mental
health and I performed very poorly in my academics, but thankfully, I had friends that I could
communicate with and open up to. A lot of people overlook the fact that sometimes, you have to
depend on others when you can’t depend on yourself. Sure, being independent is good but, when we
are at our lowest point of our lives, there really isn’t a choice to make but open up and tell others
your story and let them lay out their recommendations on you in order for you to feel better. To
conclude, if you’re experiencing depression, don’t be afraid to be close to a few people and become
friends with them, they’ll most likely help you out one way or another.
- Media influence certainly did kind of redefined my understanding of beauty. As we may know,
media is a very powerful thing, it is everywhere, ranging from newspapers, television, all the way to
our smartphones. As stated by the module, repeated exposure to media and to both direct and
indirect pressures from media are risk factors for body dissatisfaction, weight concerns, and eating
disorders. This affects a lot of people, especially the ones that are viewing media, they think that the
standard for being even remotely beautiful is the one on the screen, they evaluate their appearance
if it is good enough based on what they see in the media that they’re viewing. An obvious example
of this would be SOME women’s beauty standard of themselves when they look at someone
beautiful on television, on a Korean novella for example. They’ll most likely copy or at least try to
imitate their appearance in order for them to look even better than they did previously. This can be
very risky because they can resort to plastic surgery which will alter their appearance and could
also possibly damage their face (although, that is still their choice), they may also develop eating
disorders since they are most likely going to try a diet that isn’t fit for their body. What we have to
understand is that we have to accept our appearance for what it is. Modifying it can either make
you even more attractive, or make you look worse, and that could lead to even more complications,
both physically and mentally.
- I can develop a healthy/positive self-esteem by just being myself. Personally, developing a healthy
and positive self-esteem isn’t that easy, there’s so much things that I compared myself to back then
until now. An example of this would be that I compared myself to men that have better looking,
better toned muscles than I did, but that’s entirely my fault because I didn’t do my part which was
to go to gym consistently throughout the week. But what I understood was that I can do it too, I just
had to put that as inspiration in order for me to do even better in terms of having a decent body,
that way I was able to accept for what I am and what body I own. That’s why we have to
understand that attractive bodies come in a lot of shapes and sizes, and not only one. Furthermore,
we have to take into account that our physical appearance do not define what we are on the inside,
and that each and every one of us has value.
