OPINION MARKING SIGNALS

Competency:
Use opinion marking signals to share ideas.

Objectives:
1. Differentiate fact from opinion.
2. Identify opinion-marking signals used in sentences.
3. Use opinion- marking signals to express or share ideas.

WHAT IS IT

FACT vs. OPINION

Fact – it is a statement that is true and can be verified objectively, or proven. It


can be observed or measured through researches or studies.

Examples:
1. There are 50 states in the United States.
2. Your heart pumps blood through your body.
3. The Republic of the Philippines’ independence was on June 12,
1898.

Opinion - it is a statement that is based on your own feeling, thinking, and


judgment. Others may agree or disagree on an opinion, but they
cannot prove or disapprove it.

Examples:
1. English is a difficult subject.
2. Leah, who is friend, is a nice person.
3. Kidney transplants always saves lives.

OPINION MARKING SIGNALS

They are words or phrases used to identify an opinion. They are usually in
the beginning of a sentence. They are also used to introduce your own personal
point of view or perspective towards a specific topic.

GENERAL CATEGORIES OF OPINION-MARKING SIGNALS

a. Expressing Personal Opinion

The following examples can be used in your introduction or opening of a


sentence:
- In my experience. . - Personally, I think. .
- In my view. . - In my opinion. .
- From my perspective. . - My impression is that. .
- From my point of view. . - I believe. .
- I think. . - I guess. .

Examples sentences:
1. Personally, I think it is better to invest in subways and trains than in
road widening programs to solve heavy traffic.
2. I believe that the greatest president in the USA is Barack Obama.

b. Expressing General Opinion


- Some people say that. . - Many people say that. .
- It is generally accepted that. . - Generally, it is thought that..

Example sentences:
1. Many people say that she is an ineffective leader. Her bossiness
resulted to not good impression with her subordinates.
2. Some people say that Visaya citizens are good in singing. Many
singing contests on TV are won by contestants from Visayas and
Mindanao.

c. Agreeing to An Opinion
- I agree. . - I could not agree more. .
- Absolutely. . - That’s true. .
- I think so too. . - Definitely. .
- Actually, I think you’re right. . - Precisely. .
- That’s a good point. . - I second that. .

Example sentences:
1. This topic is interesting!
2. I totally agree with you. It will help us to be critical readers and
listeners.

d. Disagreeing to An Opinion
- I see your point but. . - You could say that, however. .
- I completely disagree. . - I find that difficult to accept. .
- I am afraid, I disagrre - I don’t think so. .
- I still have my doubts - I’m not sure about that. .
- I don’t really agree with that - We don’t seem to be in complete

Example sentence:
1. Teacher 1: This new normal education set up provides students with
easy access to answers because they can search in the internet.
Teacher 2: You could say that, however there are unprivileged
students who do not have an access to internet especially those who
reside in remote areas.
