UNIT 4-Functions

Functions describe the purpose of language use within a context. A function emphasizes how language is used and its meaning for those involved. The same words or phrases can have different functions depending on the context. For example, ways of inviting someone to lunch can vary based on the situation and degree of formality. Functions, exponents, context, and register all contribute to effective communication.

UNIT 4-FUNCTIONS

What a Function is? A function is a reason why we communicate.

Apologising Agreeing Interrupting

Advising Claryfing Expressing obligation
Thanking Disagreeing Expressing preferences
Greeting Refusing Inviting

 Functions are a way of describing language use.

We can also describe language grammatically or lexically (through vocabulary). When we

describe language through functions we emphasize the use of the language and its meaning for
the people who are in the CONTEXT where it is used

One exponent can express several different functions because its function depends on the
context. Here are five different exponents of inviting someone to lunch. In what different situations
would you use them?
Register
The formality or informality of the language used in a particular situation.

Formal register or language is used in serious or important situations, e.g. in a job application.

Informal register or language is used in relaxed or friendly situations, e.g. with family or friends.
Requesting, making a polite request. To ask someone politely to do something,

e.g. Please could you open the window?

Identify the context, the exponent, the function and the register.
