Interview: Emma Watson Once Mistook

Jimmy Fallon for Jimmy Kimmel

Script
Jimmy Fallon-Thank you so much for coming back to our show. Is it -- Is it all
flushing back to you?
Emma Watson-The trauma. The post-traumatic stress of my last performance on
the "Jimmy Fallon Show." [ Laughs ]
Jimmy Fallon -Last time you were on this show, and this is late night, we just had
met. We'd never met each other.
Emma Watson -We'd never met before.
Jimmy Fallon -And you couldn't be nicer and sweeter and, gosh, I'm a fan of yours.
Emma Watson - [ Laughs ]
Jimmy Fallon -And you came out, and you sat just the way you're sitting,
Emma Watson -Just here, in this seat.
Jimmy Fallon -And we were talking, and I just gave you a compliment, and then
you said, "Before you continue..."
Emma Watson (overlaps) -"Before you even start the interview..."
Jimmy Fallon -Yeah.
Emma Watson -I just dove straight in with "I love that Halloween candy thing that
you do."
Jimmy Fallon -And I said...
Emma Watson -And there was just silence.
Jimmy Fallon- [ Laughter ] -I said, "The Halloween candy thing, is that right?"
Emma Watson -You're like, "The candy corn thing?"
Jimmy Fallon -Yeah, I thought --
Emma Watson -No.
Jimmy Fallon -You go, "When you get kids, you trick them." And I go, "That's
Jimmy Kimmel."
[ Laughter ]
[ Fog horn blows ]
Jimmy Fallon -It was the first time we met!
Emma Watson -And I died inside.
Jimmy Fallon -(overlaps) You died. You turned bright red.
Emma Watson -I died inside.
Jimmy Fallon -[ Laughs ]
Emma Watson -I was like...
Jimmy Fallon - (overlap) I don't mind. I get that all the time. I get Jimmy Kimmel
all the --but then...
Emma Watson -But you were so sweet, 'cause you let me -- you were like...You
could tell that I was dying inside, and you were like, "It's okay, honey.
If you want to go out and start again, we can do it again."
Jimmy Fallon - [ Laughter ] -Yeah, so I had leave and re-enter, and then when you
came and sat down, I said, "So, are you a big fan of late night TV?"
[ Laughter ]
That was the first -- We don't ever want to embarrass our guests, so,
please, thank you for coming back and I appreciate that.
Emma Watson -You were so sweet. But then I feel like this show had a great vibe,
cause everyone was in hysterics
Jimmy Fallon -Yeah..
Emma Watson -And the energy was like --And I was so keen to do a good job after
having...
Jimmy Fallon -Yeah. We love you. I mean, come on.
Emma Watson -Aww.
Jimmy Fallon -We -- Whatever you do.
[ Cheers and applause ]
You have had a giant year.
Emma Watson -Yes, I have. It's been crazy.
Jimmy Fallon -I mean, you were fantastic in "Beauty and the Beast." We had Josh
Gad on the show. But, man, you were just perfect. You were beautiful
in it, you sang great, it was shot beautifully. And I want to say, not
that it really matters to anybody, but I think it made like a billion
dollars or something?
Emma Watson -It -- It...
Jimmy Fallon -Is that possible?
Emma Watson -It's crazy. I remember someone saying to me, "We'd be so happy if
this made, like, you know, 600 or 500 or something,"
Jimmy Fallon -Yeah..
Emma Watson -and it's been -- it's like, I can't even. I'm just so grateful that
people...
Jimmy Fallon - (overlaps)That doesn't make any sense.
Emma Watson -...loved it.
Jimmy Fallon -[ Overlaps ]Those numbers are crazy.
Emma Watson -I know. It's crazy, crazy.
Jimmy Fallon - How does it.........
Emma Watson - (overlaps) But this means that people loved the film, which is just
-- which is just so awesome.
Jimmy Fallon -I know.
Emma Watson -[ Overlaps ] so....
Jimmy Fallon- We could tell you put a lot of work into it.
Emma Watson -Yeah. [ Laughs ]
[ Cheers and applause ]
Jimmy Fallon -I read somewhere....
[ Cheers and applause ]
I read somewhere that you had to go to like a princess boot camp or
something like that.
Emma Watson -I did. I did princess boot camp for three months.
Jimmy Fallon -That sounds like fun, though.
Emma Watson -It was fun. I got to ride a horse, I got to learn to waltz, and then I
had singing lessons and then rehearsals. So it was like, yeah.
Jimmy Fallon -Yeah....
Emma Watson - (overlaps) It was cool.
Jimmy Fallon -Yeah, so now would you ever -- could you ever waltz now or
ballroom now if you...?
Emma Watson -Uh, I mean, I could, like, stumble my way through something
reasonable, yeah.
Jimmy Fallon -Okay.
Emma Watson -[ Overlaps ] Yeah...
Jimmy Fallon -Maybe next time we'll do a ballroom dance.
Emma Watson -Okay, great.
Jimmy Fallon -All right, yeah. I know. You're really excited about that.

CONVERSATION ANALYSIS
Aspects of Conversation:
1. Opening and Closing:
Opening as an aspect of the conversation is quite apparent in the utterance " Thank
you so much for coming back to our show." Here, Jimmy Fallon thanks her for
coming but it is just to create a rapport with Emma Watson and to make her
comfortable, so that, he can introduce his topic and lead her to answer the set
questions. Closing is not observed in this clip of the interview because usually
Fallon interviews his guests for almost 14-30 minutes but it is just a short clip
taken from that interview.
2. Adjacency Pairs:

The adjacency pairs can be found almost throughout the script of the interview.
The responses to most of the adjacency pairs are elongated to two or more turns a
few times because either one of them laughs while answering or one participant
comes up with another anecdote to discuss, but at the end, the answer is provided
for the type of adjacency pair used.

Invite:

JF: Maybe next time we'll do a ballroom dance.

EW: Okay, great.

Compliment:

i. JF: We could tell you put a lot of work into it.

EW: Yeah. [ Laughs ]
ii. JF: You have had a giant year.
EW: Yes, I have. It's been crazy.

iii. JF: Those numbers are crazy.

EW: I know. It's crazy, crazy.

iv. JF: Yeah. We love you. I mean, come on.

EW: Aww.

Question:
i. JF: Is it all flushing back to you?
EW: The trauma. The post-traumatic stress of my last
performance on the "Jimmy Fallon Show." [ Laughs ]

ii. JF: Is that possible?

EW: It's crazy. I remember someone saying to me, "We'd be so
happy if this made, like, you know, 600 or 500 or something,"
JF: Yeah..
EW: and it's been -- it's like, I can't even. I'm just so grateful
that people...
JF: That doesn't make any sense.
EW: ...loved it.

iii. JF: I read somewhere that you had to go to like a princess boot
camp or something like that.
EW: I did. I did princess boot camp for three months.

iv. JF: Yeah, so now would you ever -- could you ever waltz now or
ballroom now if you...?
EW: Uh, I mean, I could, like, stumble my way through
something reasonable, yeah.

Assessment: These adjacency pairs are mostly used at the start of the
interview in order to make Emma Watson comfortable and reminisce
the last interview of her by him.

i. JF: Last time you were on this show, and this is late night, we
just had met. We'd never met each other.
EW: We'd never met before.

ii. JF: And you came out, and you sat just the way you're sitting,
EW: Just here, in this seat.

iii. EW: And I died inside.

JF: You died. You turned bright red.

iv. JF: That sounds like fun, though.

EW: It was fun. I got to ride a horse, I got to learn to waltz, and
then I had singing lessons and then rehearsals. So it was like,
yeah.
3. Preference Organization:
All of the responses to adjacency pairs are polite and modest because Emma
Watson as a celebrity has to give responses which are polite and modest in order to
not make any controversies and by using her politeness and easy agreement, she is
also indirectly promoting her film to the audience.
4. Topic Management:
The main topic revolves around Emma Watson as she is the guest of the show,
therefore, the first half of the interview is about her prior experience on Jimmy
Fallon's show which then later shifts to her achievements and struggles.
5. Turn-Taking:
Turn taking is observed most of the time in the interview because both the
participants take turns in answering the questions that the other asked but
turn- taking is also sometimes failed. The turn taking was implemented through
pauses or laughter due to which the other participant automatically took over his
turn. The reasons for failure of turn-taking in this interview sometimes are that, at
the start of the interview, Emma's mistaking Fallon for Kimmel in the last show is
discussed by Fallon and as it is a mortifying experience for her, and funny now,
she mostly can't control her laughter and abruptly stops what she was saying,
therefore, Fallon takes over the turn and vice versa. The times turns were
overlapped includes the following;
i. Jimmy Fallon -And we were talking, and I just gave you a
compliment, and then you said, "Before you continue..."
Emma Watson (overlaps) -"Before you even start the interview..."

ii. Emma Watson -And I died inside.

Jimmy Fallon -(overlaps) You died. You turned bright red.
iii. Emma Watson -I was like...
Jimmy Fallon - (overlap) I don't mind. I get that all the time. I get
Jimmy Kimmel all the --but then...

iv. Emma Watson -and it's been -- it's like, I can't even. I'm just so
grateful that people...
Jimmy Fallon - (overlaps)That doesn't make any sense.
Emma Watson -...loved it.
Jimmy Fallon -[ Overlaps ]Those numbers are crazy.
Jimmy Fallon - How does it.........
Emma Watson - (overlaps) But this means that people loved the film,
which is just -- which is just so awesome.
Jimmy Fallon -I know.
Emma Watson -[ Overlaps ] so....
Jimmy Fallon- We could tell you put a lot of work into it.

v. Emma Watson -It was fun. I got to ride a horse, I got to learn to
waltz, and then I had singing lessons and then rehearsals. So it was
like, yeah.
Jimmy Fallon -Yeah....
Emma Watson - (overlaps) It was cool.
Jimmy Fallon -Yeah, so now would you ever -- could you ever waltz
now or ballroom now if you...?
Emma Watson -Uh, I mean, I could, like, stumble my way through
something reasonable, yeah.
Jimmy Fallon -Okay.
Emma Watson -[ Overlaps ] Yeah...
6. Repair:
The only time repair as an aspect of conversation was observed was when Fallon
and Emma Watson were reminiscing their last interview which was other-repair
type of repair. Fallon said " The Halloween candy thing" but then Emma corrected
him by saying ""The candy corn thing?" because according to her knowledge, that
was what she remembered of the last interview.
Jimmy Fallon- [ Laughter ] -I said, "The Halloween candy thing, is
that right?"
Emma Watson -You're like, "The candy corn thing?"
7. Feedback:
Feedback is observed throughout the interview because it is a crucial element of
conversation, without it, this interview would have been awkward and unbeneficial
for both the participants. Feedback is observed in the interview through use of
expressions like "Yeah", "I know" among many others. Non-verbal feedback in the
form of gestures such as nodding head is also seen throughout the interview in
order to indicate that the participants are following and interested in the
conversation.
