CONVERSATION ANALYSIS
Aspects of Conversation:
1. Opening and Closing:
Opening as an aspect of the conversation is quite apparent in the utterance " Thank
you so much for coming back to our show." Here, Jimmy Fallon thanks her for
coming but it is just to create a rapport with Emma Watson and to make her
comfortable, so that, he can introduce his topic and lead her to answer the set
questions. Closing is not observed in this clip of the interview because usually
Fallon interviews his guests for almost 14-30 minutes but it is just a short clip
taken from that interview.
2. Adjacency Pairs:
The adjacency pairs can be found almost throughout the script of the interview.
The responses to most of the adjacency pairs are elongated to two or more turns a
few times because either one of them laughs while answering or one participant
comes up with another anecdote to discuss, but at the end, the answer is provided
for the type of adjacency pair used.

Compliment:
Question:
i. JF: Is it all flushing back to you?
EW: The trauma. The post-traumatic stress of my last
performance on the "Jimmy Fallon Show." [ Laughs ]
iii. JF: I read somewhere that you had to go to like a princess boot
camp or something like that.
EW: I did. I did princess boot camp for three months.
iv. JF: Yeah, so now would you ever -- could you ever waltz now or
ballroom now if you...?
EW: Uh, I mean, I could, like, stumble my way through
something reasonable, yeah.
Assessment: These adjacency pairs are mostly used at the start of the
interview in order to make Emma Watson comfortable and reminisce
the last interview of her by him.
i. JF: Last time you were on this show, and this is late night, we
just had met. We'd never met each other.
EW: We'd never met before.
ii. JF: And you came out, and you sat just the way you're sitting,
EW: Just here, in this seat.
iv. Emma Watson -and it's been -- it's like, I can't even. I'm just so
grateful that people...
Jimmy Fallon - (overlaps)That doesn't make any sense.
Emma Watson -...loved it.
Jimmy Fallon -[ Overlaps ]Those numbers are crazy.
Jimmy Fallon - How does it.........
Emma Watson - (overlaps) But this means that people loved the film,
which is just -- which is just so awesome.
Jimmy Fallon -I know.
Emma Watson -[ Overlaps ] so....
Jimmy Fallon- We could tell you put a lot of work into it.
v. Emma Watson -It was fun. I got to ride a horse, I got to learn to
waltz, and then I had singing lessons and then rehearsals. So it was
like, yeah.
Jimmy Fallon -Yeah....
Emma Watson - (overlaps) It was cool.
Jimmy Fallon -Yeah, so now would you ever -- could you ever waltz
now or ballroom now if you...?
Emma Watson -Uh, I mean, I could, like, stumble my way through
something reasonable, yeah.
Jimmy Fallon -Okay.
Emma Watson -[ Overlaps ] Yeah...
6. Repair:
The only time repair as an aspect of conversation was observed was when Fallon
and Emma Watson were reminiscing their last interview which was other-repair
type of repair. Fallon said " The Halloween candy thing" but then Emma corrected
him by saying ""The candy corn thing?" because according to her knowledge, that
was what she remembered of the last interview.
Jimmy Fallon- [ Laughter ] -I said, "The Halloween candy thing, is
that right?"
Emma Watson -You're like, "The candy corn thing?"
7. Feedback:
Feedback is observed throughout the interview because it is a crucial element of
conversation, without it, this interview would have been awkward and unbeneficial
for both the participants. Feedback is observed in the interview through use of
expressions like "Yeah", "I know" among many others. Non-verbal feedback in the
form of gestures such as nodding head is also seen throughout the interview in
order to indicate that the participants are following and interested in the
conversation.
