Alarm Interface Test 16505-2022

1) MAN Energy Solutions recommends performing a test to verify that the auxiliary monitoring system (AMS) will not initiate an alarm, slowdown, or shutdown if it stops receiving data from the engine management system (EMS) due to a disrupted data connection. 2) The test involves disconnecting network cables or powering off the EMS computer to interrupt the EMS to AMS data flow and confirm that AMS only indicates missing values without generating out of range alarms or shutting down the engine. 3) If the test causes an engine slowdown or shutdown, it means AMS is not properly configured to handle missing EMS data, and MAN-ES should be contacted for assistance.

To whom it may concern

Our ref: EEEEO/AJL/BSAM/16505-2022 31 March 2022

Test procedure: AMS Handling of Engine Process Values.

Applicable to MAN/ES 2 stroke ME engines with Triton and MPC controllers.

MAN-ES strongly recommend performing below test to verify that AMS will react
according to design in case no information is received from EMS.
The test is to verify that AMS will not raise alarm, slowdown or shutdown based on
missing EMS data. It is done by disrupting the EMS-AMS Modbus.

The data flow is as shown below with the red line.

Figure 1 Data flow: ECS MOP-B ->EMS MOP -> AMS

In case ECS MOP-B, EMS MOP, managed switch or any of the network cables fail, the
data flow will be interrupted. EMS-AMS Modbus will send “+32767” signifying #Bad
Value for affected Modbus registers; however, they must not result in Out of Range
Alarms (OoR) in AMS.

Test steps:
At a convenient and safe location while operating Engine at low load, but above
slowdown limit:
1. Conduct following tests separately followed by Verification steps 2.1-3:
1.1. disconnect LAN cable 󠆯from port / MOP-B
1.2. disconnect LAN cable from port / PMI DAU
1.3. Power off the EMS computer
2. Confirm that:
2.1. no slowdown or shutdown is requested/activated by AMS
2.2. no alarms – Process value, OoR or any other type alarms are raised in AMS.
Only Acceptable AMS Alarm is one for EMS communication loss.
2.3. values missing in AMS monitoring are indicated:
As missing such as “---“, “N/A”, 󠆯“OoR” 󠆯etc. 󠆯
Not 󠆯as 󠆯physical 󠆯values 󠆯such 󠆯as 󠆯“3276.7 󠆯°C”, 󠆯“327.67 󠆯bar” 󠆯or 󠆯“327.7 󠆯g/kWh” 󠆯etc.

In case above test cause slowdown or shutdown, it is an indication that AMS is not
configured correctly. If assistance from MAN-ES is needed in this respect, please
contact MAN-ES at: [email protected]
