Problem Set 4

This document contains 5 problems involving calculating geometric properties such as volume, surface area, and lateral area of pyramids and cones. Problem 1 asks to find volume, lateral surface area and total surface area of a rectangular pyramid. Problem 2 asks to calculate the weight of the roof of the Washington Monument, which is in the shape of a pyramid. Problem 3 asks to find the lateral area of a regular triangular pyramid given its volume and slant height. Problems 4 and 5 involve calculating various properties of right circular cones and a cylinder-cone composite solid.

Problem Set 4: Pyramids and Cones

1. Find the volume, lateral surface area, and the total surface area of a rectangular
pyramid with base measurement of 6 ft by 4 ft and a height of 18ft.
2. The regular pyramid roof of the Washington Monument is 55 ft. high and has a base
which is a square 35 ft. 2 in. on a side. The marble slabs of which it is built weigh 165 lb.
per cu. ft. If the room covered by the roof is a pyramid whose square base is 34 ft. on a
side and 54 ft. high, what is the weight of the roof? (Neglect the six small windows.)
3. A regular triangular pyramid with a slant height of 9 m has a volume equal to 50 m3.
Find the lateral area of the pyramid.
4. A right circular cone has a lateral area of 1,280 𝜋 ft2. And a base area of 512 𝜋 ft2. Find
the volume.
5. A right circular cone with an altitude of 25 cm and a base diameter of 20 cm rests on
top of a right circular cylinder of the same base and 30 cm high.
a). Find the lateral area and the volume of the cone.
b). Find the total surface area and the volume of the composite solid.
