JAMF -Device offboarding procedure

It is mandatory to fully wipe the device before ending its life cycle and releasing the
device from the Organization's management system . Please be aware that the device
needs to be taken out from both JAMF and Apple Business Manager (ABM) portals

P.S. The device must be released from the ABM portal in buyout scenarios. If this step is
not performed, the device will still be provisioned for the Zero touch deployment although it
has been completed wiped

Procedures

The following steps must be carried out in order to successfully delete the device from
our management systems
1. Release the device from Apple Business Manager (ABM) portal
2. Wipe the device from JAMF portal
3. Remove the device from JAMF portal
1. Release the Device from Apple Business Manager

Logon to our Apple Business Manager portal : Apple Business Manager

Once you are logged in, Click “Devices” as shown below


Mention the device serial number that has to be removed in the search field

Select the target device.

Now, on the top right Click on “Release from organisation” option


You should see the window below. Give a check mark on “I understand that this cannot
be undone” and click on “Release”

Removing a device from ABM will not wipe it automatically or remove it from Jamf.

It is the process to disable the zero-touch deployment and release the device from

the Company’s ownership.

2. Wipe the device from JAMF Portal


Log on to the JAMF portal through Okta. From the homepage, Click on “Computers”
option from top left

Now Click on “Search” option as shown below

This is the inventory section where you see the details of all endpoints.
Mention the serial number of the target device that needs to be removed on the “filters

field”

Now, Click on the device


Select “Management” option as shown below

Now, Click on “Wipe Computer” option


Give a check mark on the “Clear Activation lock” option and mention a 6-digit passcode
to initiate the device wipe.
NOTE: AFTER SELECTING THE WIPE COMPUTER OPTION, THE DEVICE WILL
IMMEDIATELY RESTART AND THE PASSCODE MUST BE ENTERED ON THE DEVICE TO
INITIATE THE WIPE PROCESS

If the device is not associated with any Apple ID, you will see a prompt that the “Clear

Activation Lock” failed. This is known behavior if the macbook is not associated with

any Apple ID. You can simply close the pop window
After the device restarts, you will see the below prompt. Type in the 6-digit passcode

that you created in the previous step and hit enter. The wipe process will begin

The device wipe takes approximately 5 minutes to complete. Once it is complete, the

machine is ready with its original factory settings.

You can now install a new copy of the Operating System. Depending on the internet
connection this process may take up to 30-40 minutes.
3. Remove the device record from the Jamf portal

Removing the device record is important as it consumes a license.

Once the device is wiped, it can be removed under the same “Management” section as
highlighted below. Click “delete” from the bottom right corner of the screen

Click on delete to remove the device from JAMF.

Offboarding process is now completed. Devices can be recycled / sold out
