Operator Manual

This manual is a reference guide for operating the Simrad CS68

Chart System. Although the manual contains a thorough
description of how to operate the CS68 system, it is
recommended that the user attend an appropriate Simrad
training course.
This manual assumes that the user is familiar with the
foundations of navigation. In addition, the user should have
basic knowledge of the Windows user interface, such as
operation of pull down menus and dialog boxes.
In this manual, names of dialog boxes, menu commands and
menu buttons are written in boldface (e.g. Navigation menu,
Edit command, OK button). References to buttons on the
keyboard and on the optional operator panels are written in
boldface, but in a different text style (e.g. F9 button).

Important text that requires special attention from the reader is

emphasized as follows:
Note Used to draw the reader’s attention to a comment or some
important information.
Caution Used for warning the reader that a risk of damage to the
equipment exists if care is not exercised.
WARNING Used when it is necessary to warn personnel
that a risk of injury or death exists if care is
not exercised.

The CS system includes the complete CS68 Operator manual in

pdf format. The manual is displayed by pressing the Help menu,
followed by the Operator Manual… command.
The manual is accessed by using the Adobe Reader application
included in the CS system. This application provides easy
navigation online by using the bookmark pane, or by using the
search function available in the application.
If a printer is connected to the CS system, it is possible to print
part of or the complete manual.

SYSTEM DESCRIPTION

1 SYSTEM DESCRIPTION
This section provides an overview of the CS68 system and
its components.

20221925 / D 1
Simrad CS68 ECDIS

1.1 Introduction
CS68 is an Electronic Chart Display and Information System
(ECDIS), where both hardware and software are ECDIS type
approved. The type approval certificates are available from the
Help menu. The system conforms to the IMO performance
standards for ECDIS when an authorized chart database is used.
CS68 displays the vessel position, speed and course in real time
in the chart, based on information received from navigational
sensors. The vessel’s symbol is displayed with actual heading,
and speed vectors may also be indicated. Chart information
critical to safe navigation defined by IMO will always appear on
the display, while other chart information may be switched off.

Based on speed and course information, the system generates

danger and grounding alarms, independent of mode of
operation.

The system includes route planning, and routes are planned

independent of the actual vessel position. The routes are
checked for dangerous position of waypoints and legs as the
route is planned. The routes are stored and may be recalled
whenever necessary. The system has no limitations to number of
waypoints in a route.

When a CS68 is used as back-up in an ECDIS system, all routes

and user added chart information will be automatically updated
on both computers. This makes it possible to do all route
planning on the backup system while the main system is used
for navigation.

chart database to cover areas where no official charts are
available. Charts in S57 format may also be imported to the CS
system.
Caution The CS68 system must use authorized charts to be ECDIS
approved. When not using an official chart, this will be
indicated in the program line, with an audible alarm and with
alarm text in the Alarm window.

For updated chart information, see http://www.c-map.no.

When delivered from factory a default chart database is

installed. This database includes no access to detailed charts,
and a license for chart zones with detailed charts should
therefore be obtained from your local Simrad dealer before the
system is used. Refer Installing a chart database, page 28.

GETTING READY TO USE THE SYSTEM

4 GETTING READY TO USE THE SYSTEM

This section holds procedures that have to be performed before
the CS68 system is ready to use.

20221925 / D 27
Simrad CS68 ECDIS

4.1 Installing a chart database

When delivered from factory a default chart database is
installed. This database includes no access to detailed charts,
and a license for chart zones with detailed charts should
therefore be obtained from your local Simrad dealer before the
system is used.
To obtain a chart license, the system’s ID code has to be
submitted to a Simrad dealer.
Use the following procedure to obtain and install the chart
license code:
− Send the system identification code to your local Simrad
dealer
− Register the chart database
− Install the license code for the charts
The chart suppliers have different methods for how to register
and maintain the chart database. Information from the chart
supplier will therefore be needed in addition to the following
sections.
For further information about how to manage the chart database,
refer to MANAGING THE CHART DATABASE, page 93.

The system identification code

When the CS system was installed on the computer, a system
identification code was generated. This code includes a
“fingerprint” of the hardware, and is unique for each CS system.
The chart suppliers demand a data access code for running the
chart database. The data access code will be obtained from the
chart supplier, and is generated based on the system
identification code and which chart zones that are to be
installed.
Note If your CS system includes both a main and a back-up system,
both computers have separate identification codes and will need
separate license codes.
Before receiving an access code, it is therefore necessary to
submit the system ID code to your Simrad dealer before an
access code could be returned.
The system identification code is found in the License
Administrator dialog as shown below. The dialog is activated
by pressing the Setup menu, followed by the Chart and the
License Administrator commands.

28 20221925 / D
GETTING READY TO USE THE SYSTEM

The system ID code can also be found on a sticker located

nearby the hardware identification sticker on the computer’s
side panel.
The chart suppliers may have different routines for receiving
and returning the data access codes. Information from the chart
supplier will therefore be necessary for obtaining the code that
should be used for the chart database.

Registering a chart database

A chart database could be run from the CD or from any disk
available on a LAN. It will however be faster to access the
charts when the database is copied to local hard disk.
When the chart database is copied to local disk as described
below, the database is also automatically registered in the CS
system.
1 Open the Database Administrator dialog by pressing the
Setup menu, followed by Chart and Database
Administrator commands.

− The right column in the dialog will explore all disks and
folders available on the computer.
− Databases that already are registered will be displayed in
the Registered DB column.
2 Select the database that is to be registered in the dialog’s
right column.

20221925 / D 29
Simrad CS68 ECDIS

− When the database is selected, name and issue number for

the database will be displayed in the Available Database
field.
3 Press the Copy Database to HD button if the database is
to be run from local disk. If not, press the Register
Database button.
− If the Copy Database to HD button was selected, the
database was automatically registered into the CS system.
4 Make sure that the preferred chart database is set as
default.

Applying the license code

When the system identification code is submitted to the chart
supplier as described in The system identification code, page 28,
the chart supplier will return a license code that has to be entered
into the CS system before the charts can be used.
1 Activate the License Administrator dialog by pressing
the Setup menu, followed by Chart and License
Administrator commands.

??

2 Select the database from the Databases drop down field.

Note The Software Modules database is not used in the CS systems!

3 Add the license either manually by typing the license code
in the Licence string field, or by selecting Add licenses
from field option.
Further information about managing the chart database is found
in MANAGING THE CHART DATABASE, page 93.

7 WORKING WITH ROUTES

This section holds description for the different methods that
may be used when creating and saving a route. The section
also includes guidance for modifying, copying and printing
a route.

20221925 / D 65
Simrad CS68 ECDIS

7.1 General
Routes may be planned independent of the actual vessel
position. The routes may be stored and recalled whenever
necessary. There are no limitations to number of waypoints in a
route that can be stored in the system.
Route planning is performed as described in page 70 onwards. A
simplified route planning may also be done using the quick
route function. Refer page 84.
The SOLAS convention requires that all charts must be updated
for intended voyages. Before planning a new route or prior to
updating an existing voyage, it is required to receive the latest
chart updates.
For automatic or manual updating of the chart, refer Official
chart updates, page 94 onwards.

7.2 The Route Editor window

In the CS68 system, routes are planned in a separate Route
Editor window. This window is activated when a new route is
created, or when an existing route is modified.

This window will be displayed as an overlay on the chart. The

display layout and the scale is setup as for the graphic area, but
independent of this setup.
The window may be minimized, resized and moved.

66 20221925 / D

68 20221925 / D
WORKING WITH ROUTES

Radius
A route consists of a series of waypoints joined together with
straight lines. Each waypoint in a route, except the first and the
last, has an associated turn radius defined. This turn radius will
make the ship turn over before the waypoint is reached.

Default turn radius for the vessel is set in the System

Configuration dialog (Ship tab). Refer the separate CS
Installation manual.
The turn radius may be set individually for each waypoint in the
route. Refer Modifying a route by using the Waypoint dialog,
page 78.

Deviation
This parameter defines the vessel’s offset distance from leg
before an alarm is given.

The deviation may be set individually for each leg in the route.
Refer Modifying a route by using the Waypoint dialog, page
78.

Speed
This is the speed used by the CS68 system for calculating
estimated time for the route.

Rhumb line
Parameter used for calculating the distance between two
waypoints. If the tick box is selected, rhumb line computation
will be used. If not, great circle computation is used.

7.5 Creating a new route

Two methods could be used when creating a new route:
− using the cursor. Refer page 71
− manually enter waypoints into a waypoint table as
described in page 72
Using the cursor for entering waypoints is used when a rough
position of the waypoints is sufficient, while the waypoint’s
coordinates may be exactly defined in the dialog.
Generally, a combination of these two methods may be the best.
The waypoints are entered by using the cursor, and then
modified to accurate coordinates by using the waypoint dialog.
A new route is started by pressing the Navigation menu,
followed by Create New Route command.
− The Route Editor window and the Create new Route

10 MAINTENANCE
This section holds descriptions for simple maintenance
procedures that should be performed by the system
operator.

20221925 / D 105
Simrad CS68 ECDIS

10.1 Maintenance philosophy

All units in the CS system are “repair by replacement” units, and
the operator is therefore required to perform only a very limited
amount of preventive maintenance.

10.2 Cleaning the operator panel and the

computer surface
Use a vacuum cleaner with a soft brush to avoid damage to the
buttons and the panel. If required, clean the buttons and panel
with a non-abrasive cloth moistened with mild soap solution.

10.3 Checking the connectors

The connectors should be checked by visual inspection only.
Push the connector plugs into the connector. If the connector
plugs are equipped with a lock, ensure that this is in correct
position.

10.4 Replacing the air inlet fan filter

If the filter (normally white colored) is discolored (gray), it
should be vacuum cleaned in place. If the filter is very
contaminated, it should be replaced.
1 Lift the fan filter cover at one corner using your finger tips
and pull it outwards.
2 Remove the dust filter using fingertips or a screwdriver
tip.
3 Insert a clean dust filter into the fan filter cover.
4 Refit the fan filter cover by snapping it onto the fan
housing.

The Chart Symbols window includes a color test area to enable
the mariner to detect the stage at which the display can no
longer be used to discriminate important features by color.
Use the following procedure to display the color test area:
1 Make sure that the ChartletsBase database is registered.
Refer page Registering a chart database, page 29.
2 Press the Tools menu followed by the Chart Symbols
command.
− The Chart Symbols window will be displayed.

3 Set the scale to 1:50 000.

4 Enlarge the window to cover the complete screen by
pressing the Maximize button.
5 Move the cursor to the middle of the color test diagram in
the lower part of the area, and press the middle cursor
button to center the display on this position.

information and charts are installed on the D drive. Regular
backup should therefore normally only be necessary for the D
drive.
Note It is strongly recommended to make a complete system backup
when the CS system is installed and configured. The separate
CS68 Installation manual includes a description for this
procedure.
The CS system includes three blank CDs, labeled MC50
SYSTEM BACKUP. These CDs should be used after
installation for a complete system backup. Other CDs used for
backup of user information and charts are not included in the
delivery.

Making a back-up
Use the following procedure for making a backup of the CS
system:
1 Insert the CD labeled MC50 BOOT in the CD drive.

This section presents a list of symptoms and suggested
corrective actions for the MC50 computer.

20221925 / D 119
Simrad CS68 ECDIS

12.1 Fault location/identification

If an error situation has occurred, the fault is normally identified
from the symptoms observed. It is therefore important to record
all these observations to help the maintenance person or service
engineer. All error messages shown on the screen should be
logged for this purpose.
If you are not able to correct the error situation yourself, you
should contact your nearest Simrad service office for advice or
to request service on board.
The fault-finding table below assumes that the problem is
caused by the MC50 itself and that no external factors are
involved. For faults and error messages related to the RAID

FAULT FINDING

12.2 Errors in the RAID system

If the MC50 includes a RAID system, all data is written to both
drives at the same time. If one of the drives fails, the other will
still operate. The system will display an error message on screen
indicating that a hard drive has failed. The system can then be
stopped at a convenient time for service. In this state where one
of the drives has failed, the system will have the same level of
reliability as a standard system without RAID.

Error messages
Note The illustrations used in this chapter are general purpose
illustrations used by the manufacturer of the RAID system.
If one of the hard disks in a RAID system fails, the system will
indicate this with the following error message:

The system will still be operational in this state. To prevent loss

of data in case failure on the other hard disk, it is recommended
to replace the faulty hard disk.

Locating the faulty hard disk

The hard disks used in the MC systems are labeled 1: Mas and
2: Mas. This corresponds with error messages found on screen.
Use the following procedure to find which hard disk that has
failed:
1 Restart the system
− During boot up the system shows the error message:
Critical status
2 Press the CTRL + F buttons to enter the RAID BIOS
3 Press 5 (Rebuild Array)
4 Press ENTER to open Array1
− The system will now show which hard disk that has failed;
either as 1:Mas or 2:Mas. This corresponds with the labels
on the hard disks
5 Turn off system and replace the faulty hard disk.

Rebuilding the RAID system

When the faulty hard disk has been replaced, the following
procedure should be used to rebuild the RAID system:
1 Turn ON the system
2 Disregard error messages and continue the start-up
procedure by pressing the ESC button
− The system will now reboot and be operational
3 Press OK when the following messages is shown:

− A new message will indicate that the system is ready to

start rebuilding the RAID system:

4 Press the OK button

− The system will now start rebuilding the disk. It will finish
the rebuilding without further assistance from user.

Note It is recommended to let the system run for at least 3 hours

before shutdown to ensure that the system has finished the
rebuild procedure. If this is impossible, the rebuild procedure
will automatically continue at next start-up.
