Welcome to the Reading and Writing Self-Learning Module on Features of and


Requirements in Composing Professional Correspondence: The Résumé.

This Self-Learning Module was collaboratively designed, developed, and


reviewed by educators from the Schools Division Office of Pasig City headed by its
Officer-in-Charge Schools Division Superintendent, Ma. Evalou Concepcion A.
Agustin, in partnership with the City Government of Pasig through its mayor,
Honorable Victor Ma. Regis N. Sotto. The writers utilized the standards set by the K
to 12 Curriculum using the Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELC) in
developing this instructional resource.

This learning material hopes to engage the learners in guided and independent
learning activities at their own pace and time. Further, this also aims to help learners
acquire the needed 21st-century skills especially the 5 Cs, namely: Communication,
Collaboration, Creativity, Critical Thinking, and Character while taking into
consideration their needs and circumstances.

used to depict skill, action, and purpose. Through our hands, we may learn, create,
and accomplish. Hence, the hand in this learning resource signifies that you as a

RECAP

In your previous lesson, you learned about a kind of academic writing


in which a student researches a controversial issue being raised and writes a
paper that explains his/ her stand or viewpoint on it. This academic writing
is called a Position paper. Its purpose it to take part in an issue and present
his/her side by giving arguable opinion supported by valid evidences.

LESSON
Professional correspondence is a communication between two or more
parties through professional writing of letters and emails such as application
letter, inquiry letter, college application letter, resume, and more.
Understanding and applying these things will equip you will increase your
confidence in dealing with the competitive job market in the future.
In this lesson, we will focus on the writing of resume and its features
and details. Since you will be graduating soon, and eventually would be
applying for job, it is very important that you should be acquainted with
features and details of resume and finally can write an effective one. First, let
us define résumé.

What is a Resume?
A resume is a summary of one’s qualifications, educational background,
and work experience relevant to a particular job he/she is applying for. (Carey,
2012)
A resume is a written document that lists your work experiences, skills,
and educational background used as a marketing tool to “sell” yourself to the
potential employer. (Foster, 2010)

It is also considered an advertisement of oneself with a purpose of


getting an interview that would lead to landing a job.

Resume has parts or sections. These would help you organize the
information you need to indicate as you market yourself to your prospect
employer. Note that resume has many parts, but in this lesson, we will include
only the basic ones.

Each parts contains the following:

Heading
▪ Your name, address, telephone/cell phone number, e-mail address
▪ Your name should be in a large font and it should stand out from all
the other texts
Objective
▪ One or two plainly stated sentences focusing on your goals for the job to
which you are applying, and how this will help you with your
professional skills

Education
▪ Contains the name of school and its location, senior high school strand,
inclusive years, academic awards, and relevant recognitions

Skills
▪ Includes different skills you possess such as communication skills,
computer or technical skills or different computer operations system
you know and other skills related to the job you are applying for. (Do
not include skills that are irrelevant)

Work experience (If applicable)


▪ Name of the company, your job title, inclusive years/months of
employment, number of years employed, and job accomplishments.
This may include On-the-job training, immersion, and the like.

Trainings (If applicable)

▪ This includes Trainings/Seminars you have attended, the date you


attended, and the sponsoring organization

References
▪ List of the contact persons who know you better but not related by
blood, and is available upon request. The list includes their names,
organization affiliated with, their position, and contact number. Three
contact persons are reasonable
There are also considerations in writing a resume. Remember that the
purpose of it is for you to get an interview. Content is very important but it
must go along with the mechanics in writing (grammar, capitalizations,
punctuations, spelling) and technicalities. (margin, font style and size, paper
size)

Here are the things you have to avoid and is considered as DONT’s in
resume writing:

▪ Do not lie- do not include information that is not true or do not falsify
your documents. (pretending you graduated college but actually did not,
pretending you passed in a board exam but truly did not, pretending you
had previous employment but in reality doesn’t have) this will ruin your
integrity and will hamper you in your future employment.

▪ Do not tolerate typographical error- (this has something to do with


mechanics in writing) this reflects your personality, and this shows
carelessness. Look for someone who is qualified to proofread and edit
your resume.

▪ Do not include unnecessary information- include only those that are


relevant to the position/job you are applying for. (Do not include
hobbies, interests, parents’ names, and the like.

▪ Do not use unreadable or distracting font style- (font, font, font, font)
choose font styles that are commonly used and acceptable in
professional writing. (e.g. arial, verdana, Calibri, or Times new roman)
▪ Do not photocopy résumé- invest in resume. Submit only the original
one. A reasonable number of pages of a resume is just one or two. A
photocopy resume would decrease the professional appearance of it.
Remember, your resume represents yourself.
