Don’t forget that good poems have interesting titles, use words to
show feelings, ideas and emotions and are a great way to show off
your creativity. Use figurative language (simile, metaphor, hyperbole,
personification, onomatopoeia or alliteration) if you can.
If you have time, illustrate your poem with a picture that represents
the idiom(s) you chose.
Use the space below to brainstorm ideas for your poem.

Helpful Hints
- Newspapers are written from the third person point of view. They are written
as if they are being narrated by someone who watched the story unfold. Avoid
using “I, me, we or us” and instead use “He, she, they, or them”.
- Can you find a unique spin or twist to put on the story? Can you report from a
different perspective – the principal, your teacher or your classmate?
- Don’t forget to include a headline that will grab your readers’ attention and
encourage them to read the entire article.
- Newspapers will often include photographs or pictures (with captions) with
their articles to help tell the story.
- Newspapers are always edited for grammar and spelling mistakes!
