Motion Assignment

This document contains a 10-question assignment on motion graphs and kinematics. The questions involve interpreting speed-time and distance-time graphs to calculate values like speed, acceleration, distance, and time. They also require plotting graphs, describing motion, and calculating average speeds. The assignment covers core concepts in kinematics and graphical analysis of 1D motion.

FORM 2: MOTION ASSIGNMENT

Question 1
Student P and student Q run in a 100 m race. The diagram shows the Distance-Time graph for each student
during the race.

a) Determine the time taken for student Q to run 100 m. [1]

b) Determine the distance between the two students as Q reaches 100 m.[1]
c) Calculate the speed of student P at time 8.0 s. [2]
d) Calculate the average speed of student Q during the 100 m race. [3]
e) Calculate the speed of student P between 10.0and 12.0 s [2]
f) State which student has the faster speed between 3.0 s and 6.0 s. [1] [Total: 10]

Question 2
A box is attached to a parachute. The box and the parachute are falling through the air. The graph is the
Speed-Time graph for the box before the parachute is opened.
FORM 2: MOTION ASSIGNMENT

(a) Calculate the distance the box moves between time = 30 s and time = 40 s [3]
(b) Determine the time when the speed of the box is 30m/s [1] [Total: 4]

Question 3
The graph is a Speed–Time graph for a skier in a race.
(a) Describe the motion of the skier at each point P, Q, R and S on the graph. [4]
(b) Calculate the acceleration of the skier between 0 s and 5 s [2] [Total: 6]
FORM 2: MOTION ASSIGNMENT

Question 4
A car moves at a constant speed of 16m/s for 4.0 seconds. During the next 2.0 seconds, the car decelerates
from a speed of 16m/s to a speed of 13m/s. It then continues at a constant speed of 13m/s for 3.0 seconds.

On the grid, plot the Speed–Time graph for the motion of the car during these 9.0 s. [3]

Question 5
A student drops a ball from a high window.
FORM 2: MOTION ASSIGNMENT

The graph shows the speed of the ball while it is falling. The points S, T, U, V and W are shown on the
graph.

a) Determine the distance fallen by the ball in section U–V of the graph. [3]
b) State the distance fallen by the ball in section V–W of the graph. [1] [Total: 4]

Question 6

The diagram shows a Speed-Time graph for a student who is running.

(a) Calculate the distance travelled by the student between 80s and 100 s.[3]
(b) Calculate the deceleration of the student [3] [Total: 6]

Question 7

The diagram shows the axes of a Speed-Time graph for an object.

FORM 2: MOTION ASSIGNMENT

(a)The object has an initial speed of 50m/s and decelerates uniformly at 0.35m /s 2 for 100 s. On the
diagram, draw the graph to represent the motion of the object. [2]

(b) Calculate the distance travelled by the object from time = 0 to time = 100 s. [3] [Total: 5]

Question 8

A model railway has two stations, Station A and Station B. The distance between the two stations is 120 m.
A model train takes 54s to travel between Station A and Station B.

Calculate the average speed of this model train. [2]

A student reviews some data about athletes and footballers. An athlete runs 12 km in 90 minutes. Calculate
the athlete’s average speed in km /h. [3]

Question 10

Some students determine the speed of a car on a road. The students measure the time for the car to travel
30m along the road. The time is 5.4 s.

Calculate the average speed of the car. [2]
