Assignment - 2 - MEC391 (A) - Fall 2022

This document provides instructions and questions for a mechanical design assignment. It includes 4 questions related to analyzing stresses and safety factors in connecting links, shafts, power screws, and helical springs. Students are asked to use reasonable design data and equations to estimate critical stresses, safety factors, deflections, and failure risks for each mechanical component. The assignment is worth 100 total marks and students must show their work to receive credit.

Assignment - 2
Course: MEC391(A) – Mechanical Design Semester / Year: Fall 2022
Total Marks: 100 Date: 25-10-2022 Submission Due Date: 01-11-2022 (In Class)
Instructions: 1) Handwritten Answer only Acceptable
2) Every answer page / sheet must appear Student Name and ID

Question 1.
A mechanical system uses a connecting-link as shown in Figure below in order to manage the
forces and movement. The link is made of AISI 1040 cold-drawn steel has an ultimate tensile
strength of 590 MPa and a yield strength of 490 MPa. It is considered that the connecting-link
is subjected to axial loading having stress concentration at two fillet sections and a hole section.
In design analyses, the geometric stress concentration factor and fatigue stress concentration
factor at fillet and hole sections need to be considered. The forces F fluctuate between a tension
of 15 kN and a compression of 60 kN and the dimensions are r = 5 mm, d = 15 mm, h = 9 mm,
w1 = 75 mm and w2 = 50 mm.
In design analyses, assuming reasonable data from Design Table / Design Figure, estimate the
most critical section (maximum stress) under fatigue loading.

Question 2.
An oil quenched and tempered heat treated steel shaft made of AISI 1050 has ultimate tensile
strength of 717 MPa and yield strength of 538 MPa. The shaft surfaces are machined and at
shoulder, the small diameter d = 32 mm, the large diameter D = 48 mm, and the fillet radius r
= 3.2 mm. The shaft is subjected to a bending moment of 150 Nm and a steady torsion moment
of 130 Nm. The reliability goal is 0.99 against fatigue failure. Assuming reasonable design
data, analyze the fatigue failure criteria and estimate the fatigue factor of safety of the design
using:
(a) DE-Gerber criterion
(b) DE-Goodman criterion
(c) DE-Soderberg criterion
(d) DE-ASME Elliptic criterion
(e) Estimate the yielding factor of safety

Question 3.
A food industry uses a power screw as a driving source for a mechanical system to convert the
rotary motion into a linear motion. The square-thread power screw to be made of triple threads
with major diameter of 36 mm and pitch of 4 mm. The frictional coefficients are 0.18 for the
threads and 0.14 for the collar. The mean collar radius is 28 mm and the power screw to be
loaded by the axial force of 12.5 kN. Considering suitable material for the power screw and
assuming reasonable data from the Design Table, estimate:
(i) The von Mises stress at the root of the thread.
(ii) Is there any possibility of plastic deformation of the material during operation of the power
screw ? Justify your answer.

Question 4.
For a mechanical system, a helical coil compression spring is to be made of no. 27 music wire.
The outside diameter of the spring cannot exceed 15 mm. The ends of the spring are squared
and ground and there are 13 total coils. Assuming reasonable design data, and using Design
Table / Chart, perform a design assessment and estimate:
(a) Deflection of the spring corresponding to the yield strength.
(b) Is buckling a possibility during operation of the spring ? Justify your answer.
