Assignment: Play therapy

Teacher Name: Dr. Saima Masoom
Class: PMDACP-2nd Semester

Problem Identification:
A child who is 14 years old and has frequent fights with classmates doesn’t show interest in studies.
He gets involved in fights with his siblings. How you will go in therapy sessions with him?
A session with parents for the case history of the child:
Before involving the child in a therapeutic session with a therapist I would prefer a brief meeting
with their parents to explore the complete history of academic, family, and social background.
Making a friendly relationship with the child:
In account to gather the brief history, the next process is to create a strong and friendly bond with
the child in order to explore the underline issues behind his fighting and aggressive behavior with
classmates and lack of interest in studies with mastery skills of empathy, genuineness,
active/reflective listening, and unconditional positive regards.
The implication of play therapy:
The implications of play therapy will usually be applied to reveal the underlying issues and modify
the child’s behavior.
Interact with the playroom:
The child will be made to interact with the playroom for therapy and session where there will be
toys and other objects according to his issues so that he can explore his emotions easily in a very
comfortable and friendly environment.
Storytelling and role play:
There may be some disturbances that are happening with the child which should be come in front
of the therapist in order to fix the unrevealed issues just as feel insecure, inferiority complex,
bullying, the stress of overloaded studies, issues in parenting styles, nature of the conflict with
classmates, siblings or even parents. For this, storytelling and role-play techniques will use with a
child which is very helpful to draw the complete picture.
Using of CBT:
If there are present some negative core beliefs about self just as unlovability which triggers
aggression with classmates and siblings, CBT may also be very helpful to fix the issues in negative
thinking patterns and also modify the behavior.
Working with a child with some anger management techniques:
• Personify the anger:
Anger is a powerful tool to express emotions. Personifying anger is a fantastic technique which
often use with children to externalize or challenge the problem that the child has. In these
situations, the child often thinks that I am the problem but the reality is the person is not the
problem, the problem is the problem. Make a simple statement to the child along the lines of
“It seems like anger has been causing you lots of stress lately. How about we give your anger
a name and draw a picture of what you think it might look like”. When your child can view the
problem, they may objectively problem-solve and develop a better understanding of the problem
or circumstance.
• Anger Iceberg:
Anger Iceberg is a fantastic visual that illustrates triggering factors and builds self-awareness. In a
therapeutic setting, the child may ask to write the events, emotions, and stressors under the surface
of the anger iceberg. When a child becomes aware of their true emotions and stressors therapist
can help them work through those emotions and problem-solve around challenging situations.
• Anger balloon technique:
Through the anger balloon technique child will learn how to release anger gradually and safely so
that no one gets harmed physically or emotionally just like air in a balloon relates to anger, the
balloon relates to the body and how we release air after filling in a balloon without getting burst.
Modifying techniques of child behavior:
After coaching the child with anger management techniques, the child will able to face challenging
situations with the awareness or understanding of the nature of the problem the second goal of
therapy is to modify the child’s behavior.
• Promoting positive behavior:
Create a positive and well-wishing behaviors list with the child and talk to the child about how to
learn and implement in behavior in order to replace aggressive and fighting behavior in school and
at home. A starting list could be:
• Positive reinforcement:
It’s a very helpful technique to modify the child’s behavior. The child shall be given some gifts
and desirable objects after training the child to adopt positive behavior and achieve good grades in
studies.
Giving assignment/ homework for the next session:
The homework or assignment will what the child learned in a play therapy session is to practice at
home under the supervision of their caregivers. Parents or caregivers will also involve in the
completion of homework to record the changes what are coming after giving the therapy.
