Design of Eccentric Isolated Footing With Strap Beam: NMM Per Meter Run

The document describes the design of an eccentric isolated footing with a strap beam to support two columns. Key steps include: 1) Sizing the footing to a width of 2.13m and lengths of 1.4m and 2.25m for each column area. 2) Designing the slab footing with a depth of 400mm and reinforcement of #12mm bars at 150mm spacing. 3) Designing the strap beam to resist bending and shear from the column loads, with a depth of 550mm and reinforcement of 6 #16mm bars at the top. 4) Detailing shear reinforcement of 2-legged 10mm stirrups at 150mm spacing at supports to 300mm at the center

Design of Eccentric Isolated footing with strap beam

Input Parameter
Column Size C1 = 0.355 m
Column Size C2 = 0.355 m
Load on C1 P1u = 445.62 kN
Load on C2 P2u = 829.33 kN
C/C distance of C1-C2 L = 3.9 m
SBC of Soil q = 150 kN/m2
Strength of concrete fck = 20 N/mm2
Strength of rebar fy = 500 N/mm2

Step 1 : Size of Footing

Assuming 10% self weight of the footing
Pu = 1274.95 kN
Unfactored load P = 849.9666667 kN
Area of footing required A = 7.79 m2
Assume width of footing B = 2.133495885 m
Let L1 and L2 be the lengths of footings under column C1 and C2 respectively and B be the width of footing
B(L1 + L2) = 7.79 m2
(L1 + L2) = 3.65 m
The distance from the resultant of the column forces to the center of Column C2
X = 1.36 m
Center of gravity of the two footings should coincide with the resultant of the two
column load to ensure uniform soil pressure below the two footings.

0.5L12 - 4.725L1 + 4.22= 0

Solving equation 1 we get
L1 = 1.40 m
L2 = 2.25 m
Step 2 : Design of slab footing under columns
Soil Pressure = 140.05 kN/m2
Cantilever projection of slab = 0.889247943 m
Maximum moment at the face of strap beam Mu = 55.37 kNm per meter run
dreqd = 142 mm
Provide depth d = 350 mm
Overall depth D = 400 mm
Step 3 : Depth requirement from one way shear criteria
Maximum shear force Vu = 75.52 kN
Assuming 0.2% of steel Ʈc = 0.32 N/mm2
Normal shear stress Ʈv = 0.22 N/mm2
Ʈc > Ʈv HENCE SAFE
Provide overall depth as 350mm, effective cover as 50 mm
Step 4 : Reinforcement in footing slab
Mu = 55372646.51 Nmm per meter run
Mu = 0.87*fy*Ast*d*(1-(Ast/bd)*(fy/fck))
fck = 20 N/mm2
fy = 500 N/mm2
Mu = 55372646.51 N-mm
B = 1000 mm
d = 200 mm
Now Solving above equation,
Area of Steel required Ast = 373.86 mm2
Dia of bar Ø = 12 mm
Area of bar AØ = 113 mm2
Spacing required SV = 162 mm
Hence provide #12mm Ø bar @ 150 mm c/c
Ast provided = 523.6666667 mm2
Distribution steel
Distribution steel = 0.12% of x-sectional area
Ast required = 480 mm2
Dia of bar Ø = 10 mm
Area of bar AØ = 78.55 mm2
Spacing required SV = 236 mm
Hence provide #12mm Ø bar @ 150 mm c/c as distribution steel
Step 5 : Design of Strap beam
The beam is subjected to a UDL = 298.79 kNm
Shear force at just right section of C2 = 336.38 kN
Shear force at just left section of C2 = -492.95 kN
Shear force at just right section of C1 = -53.04 kN
Shear force at just left section of C1 = 392.58 kN
Shear force at corner of footing C1 = 27.20 kN
Point of Zero shear force X = 1.31 m

Positive moment at center of C2 = 189.34 kNm

Positive moment at center of C1 = 4.71 kNm

Maximum negative moment occurs at point of Zero SF

M = -253.20 kNm
Hence maximum moment occure in beam Mu = 253.20 kNm
Assume width of strap beam b = 355.00 mm

Depth required from moment criteria

dreqd = 490.25 mm
d = 500.00 mm
D = 550.00 mm
Area of steel required
Mu = 253.20 kNm
Mu = 0.87*fy*Ast*d*(1-(Ast/bd)*(fy/fck))

fck = 20.00 N/mm2

fy = 500.00 N/mm2
Mu = 253200662.36 N-mm
b = 355.00 mm
d = 500.00 mm
Now Solving above equation,
Ast = 1157.23 mm2
Dia of bar Ø = 16.00 mm
Area of bar AØ = 201.09 mm2
Number of bar required = 5.75
Hence provide 6 bars of 16 mm dia at Top portion of the beam
Ast provided = 1206.528 mm2
Minimum steel Ast min = 301.75 <
HENCE SAFE Ast provided
Design for shear
The critical section for shear is at the right face of column C2
Vu = -440 kN
Ʈv = 2.48 N/mm2
From Table 19 of IS 456 Pt = 0.6797 %
Ʈc = 0.58 N/mm2
Ʈc < Ʈv
Hence Shear reinforcement required
Vus = 336.97 kN
Using 2 legged 10 mm dia stirrups
Dia of bar Ø = 10 mm
Area of bar AØ = 79 mm2
Asv = 157.1 mm2
Sv = 101.40 mm
Hence provide 2 legged 10mm Ø bar @ 150 mm c/c at support and gradually
increase to 300 mm c/c towards the center of beam

Reinforcement for positive moment

Area of steel required
Mu = 189.34 kNm
Mu = 0.87*fy*Ast*d*(1-(Ast/bd)*(fy/fck))

fck = 20 N/mm2
fy = 500 N/mm2
Mu = 189.343 KN-m
b = 355.00 mm
d = 500.00 mm
Now Solving above equation,
2
Ast = 1016.51 mm
Dia of bar Ø = 16 mm
2
Area of bar A Ø = 201 mm
Number of bar required = 5.06
Hence provide 3 bars of 16 mm diat at bottom portion of the beam
2
Ast provided = 603.264 mm
Minimum steel Ast min = 301.75 < Ast provided
