Ans: Our arm works like a third class lever. The palms holding the object is the LOAD
area, the elbow is the FULCRUM and the arm muscles apply the EFFORT

2. You must have come across spiral staircases in buildings. What is their advantage?

Ans: Spiral stair cases save space and are also modern designs of interior designing.
Ready to fix kits are available for this. It also reduces the risk or danger of falling
down from a normal stair case due to the curves in between the steps.

1. Why do hospitals and railway stations have sloping ramps along with stairs?
Ans: Hospitals and railway stations have sloping ramps to load and unload heavy
materials in and out of the buildings
2. A person pushes a wall with all his might but it is said that no work is being done.
Why?

Ans: In Science, Work is said to be done when an object is moved from one place to
another in the direction of force applied. Here the wall has not moved in the direction
of applied force and therefore work is not done.

3. Why machine parts are oiled?

Ans: When machines are not in use for a long time the friction between their parts
increases and the movements will be harder. To lubricate the machine and make it work
smoothly we use oil in machine parts.
