POLICY
It is the policy of Alcatel-Lucent to establish and maintain requirements for product and package identification and traceability that support the requirements of Section 7.0 of the Quality Manual: Product Realization, document 8BD 00001 0000 QRZZA.

2.0
2.1

PURPOSE AND SCOPE

Purpose The purpose of this document is to state the requirements for both product and packaging identification marking. This document will indicate the minimum acceptable requirements for sending products built by OEMs/ODMs to Alcatel-Lucent business units, Alcatel-Lucent business partners, and customers of Alcatel-Lucent.

2.2

Scope This document covers markings and labels applied to product and product packaging. Product types include, but are not limited to: Printed Circuit Board Assemblies, MultiBoard Modules, Shelves, Racks, Cabinets, and Cabling. Packaging and Shipping labels include Unit Packaging, Cartons, and Skids. This document contains time-sensitive information. The telecommunications industry has labeling requirements that will undergo change in 2006. Those changes will affect all product. When appropriate those changes are noted. Consult section 6.0 for 2D migration timeline details.

DEFINITIONS
In-Service Label : An in-service label implies that the label contents may be read with the unit installed and in operation. A Non In-Service label implies that the label is still readable, but the unit must physically be taken out of service and possibly removed from the system. OEM: Original Equipment Manufacturer, An OEM will typically build to order based on designs of Alcatel-Lucent. ODM: Original Design Manufacturer, is a company that designs and manufactures a product that is then sold under other brand names.

5.1

RESPONSIBILITY, GENERAL REQUIREMENTS AND RECORDS

Responsibility The Product Support Engineering [PSE] group within Alcatel-Lucent is responsible for this document. If an OEM is not able to comply with a requirement within this specification, PSE must review the circumstances to determine the impact on AlcatelLucent and Alcatel-Lucent customer business operations. From this review either plans for compliance within a reasonable time frame or a waiver will be jointly drafted.

5.2 5.2.1

General Requirements Whenever serialization is cited as a requirement, the OEM must comply with TCIF-98005 at a minimum. A preferred refinement of these requirements used within AlcatelLucent is documented in 8BD 01000 1321 QRZZA. The required method is the use of the Telcordia MFR Code as a serial number prefix. When an Alcatel-Lucent product design specification is cited as a requirement, it will supersede any differing requirements in this document unless Alcatel-Lucent submits written notice otherwise. Generic requirements for labels are found in Section 10.0. These must be used in lieu of a specific Alcatel-Lucent requirements document for a particular application.

5.2.2

5.2.3

5.3

Records The OEM is required to maintain history of items sold to Alcatel-Lucent or to customers of Alcatel-Lucent. This requirement is universal for both serialized and non-serialized product. This history must be made available to Alcatel-Lucent upon request and may not be destroyed before a period of ten years without permission from Alcatel-Lucent.

5.3.1

Serialized Product Record Retention The OEM must maintain the history of product by serial number that includes: OEM Part Number OEM Revision Date of Manufacture Date of Shipment Test and Repair history

PROCESS DOCUMENT TEMPLATE: 8BD 02000 0000 QRZZA_03 Copyright 2001-2007 Alcatel-Lucent All Rights Reserved

5.3.2

Non-Serialized Product Record Retention The OEM must maintain the history of product by purchase order that includes: OEM Part Number OEM Revision Date of Manufacture Date of Shipment Test/Audit history of identical items with same date of manufacture.

6.0
6.1

2D SYMBOL IMPLEMENTATION
Introduction 2D symbols The Telecommunications Industry is undergoing a migration to the use of 2D symbols on both product and package labeling. These 2D symbols combine data that has been historically contained in multiple, linear bar codes. The 2D symbols contain the data in a specific format that identifies each data item within it so that host software can identify what the data is (part number, revision, CLEI code, weight, et cetera).

6.2

Important Dates 2D symbols 2D symbols may be placed on both product and packaging immediately. Beginning in April 2006, manufacturers may place 2D symbols on product exclusively. If room exists on product and both the 2D and linear bar codes can exist in an in-service scannable location, that is recommended. If room does not exist for both types, the linear bar codes may be moved to a non in-service location. Because of the various 2D symbol reading capabilities of Alcatel-Lucents customers, these dates are not absolute. Alcatel-Lucent reserves the right to alter 2D symbol implementation based on customer readiness. Such deviation will be discussed during the review of the OEMs product and packaging marking plan, see section 7.1

6.3

Changes During Production Delivery 2D symbols As Alcatel-Lucent customers become capable for 2D symbol reading during 2006 and later, the product and package marking may need to change after the approval of the OEMs marking plan. Alcatel-Lucent will contact the OEM and communicate required changes for compliance. The OEM has four weeks to implement the changes to affect shipped product. If the changes can not be incorporated in four weeks, a waiver is required.

Larger equipment such as shelves, racks, and cabinets must have an Alcatel-Lucent label that provides Alcatel-Lucent contact information. This label must be placed in a prominent location that is visible to an equipment operator. For outside plant equipment, such as a cabinet or customer access enclosure, the contact information may be placed in a protected area, but must still remain prominently visible when the equipment is opened for access. Unless directed otherwise by Alcatel-Lucent, the OEM may place their company name on the product on an interior surface not visible from the exterior, but must not place contact information relating to installation, operation, troubleshooting, or product return inquires. The OEM may place their contact information on the product to inform personnel to call in case of emergency. The intent of such contact is for emergency service agencies. The OEM must submit a document defining their product marking method to AlcatelLucent for approval. Alcatel-Lucent will then advise the OEM of any changes relating to product branding and customer contact information. Based on specific circumstances, deviations from these generic requirements may be imposed by Alcatel-Lucent. The label shown in Figure 8 may be used in lieu of a specific requirement from AlcatelLucent in marking product. The information may also be incorporated into an existing label containing other information, but must maintain the minimum requirements stated below and in sections 7.7.6 and 7.7.7 .

GENERIC LABEL REQUIREMENTS

Part Number and Revision Formats Alcatel-Lucent has a broad range of part numbering systems due to years of corporate acquisitions. Many products will maintain a legacy part numbering system for various reasons. It is important to note that in some cases only a portion of a part number may used to mark a product or package. Some part numbering systems have multiple revision types for a part number. A revision type may be intended for internal or external use or both. Internal Revisions are intended for Alcatel-Lucent and its suppliers (CMs, OEMs, and ODMs). External Revisions, also referred to as Customer Revisions, change less frequently and are intended to inform Alcatel-Lucents customer of a change that is significant to them. In cases where the OEM supplied item does not have a Bill of Materials [BOM] that Alcatel-Lucent comprehends, the External Revision might be used for trading purposes between AlcatelLucent and the OEM. If the OEM supplied item has a BOM, in that it contains other OEM supplied items considered field replaceable, the internal revision must be used to ensure the OEMs BOM and Alcatel-Lucents BOM match. The table below indicates appropriate part number and revision formats for most situations. Due to the complexity of OEM supply chain logistics, variations from the table may be required to facilitate various business processes. An OEM must receive guidance from Alcatel-Lucent on proper part number and revision formats for each application. Per sections 7.1 and 8.1, the OEM must submit a marking plan to Alcatel-Lucent for approval.
