Data Collection Methods and Procedures

This document provides information about research methods for collecting data. It discusses quantitative research methods like surveys, observation, experiments, and document screening. It also discusses the definition of an intervention in research and important steps to consider when planning data collection, including getting permission, preparing instruments, selecting participants, creating a budget, and developing a timeline. The document includes activities for readers to analyze their own research paradigm and describe the methods they will use.

Research

in Daily Life 2
John Lemuel J. Noche
Research Teacher
Dear Lord and Father of all, thank you
for ways in which you provide for us all.
Help us to focus our hearts and minds
now on what we are about to learn.
Inspire us by your Holy Spirit as we
listen and write. Guide us by your
eternal light as we discover more about
the world around us. We ask all this in
the name of Jesus. Amen.

The Intervention (Experimental)
Survey, Interview, Content Analysis,
& Observation (Non-Experimental)

4
Objectives
The learner should be able to:
1. Determine the procedures and guidelines for

undertaking experimental and non-experimental

procedures such as surveys, interviews, and
observation
2. Describe their study’s experimental and non-

experimental procedures such as survey, interview,

and observation
3. Illustrate the procedures using a flowchart and

other smart objects

4. Write and describe the research procedures of the

study
What is a Research
Method?
In General, Research methods are
ways of collecting and analyzing
data. Common methods include
surveys, experiments, interviews,
and observations.
Quantitative
Research
Methods
Quantitative Research Methods

Surveys or questionnaires: which

ask the same questions to large
numbers of participants or use
Likert scales which measure
opinions as numerical data.
8
Quantitative Research Methods

Observation: which can either

involve counting the number of
times a specific phenomenon occurs,
or the coding of observational data
in order to translate it into
numbers. 9
Quantitative Research Methods

Document screening: sourcing

numerical data from financial
reports or counting word
occurrences.

10
Quantitative Research Methods

Experiments: testing hypotheses in

laboratories, testing cause and
effect relationships, through field
experiments, or via quasi- or
natural experiments.

What is an
Intervention?
The intervention itself is
the aspect that is being
manipulated in your
research.
Steps to Consider
in Planning Data
Collection
1. Permission
Before the conduct of the study,
seek first to collect data in any
private context (for example, in a
school, a community, family,
church/mosque, bank, hospital).
In most cases, it has to be a
written permission.
Informed consent
2. Instrument
• Prepare beforehand an appropriate
research instrument that is suitable for
your study to collect good data.
• Make sure that during the administration
of the instrument such as questionnaires,
sufficient and clear instructions are given
to the respondents.
• Collected data should be properly
recorded or tabulated. Afterwards it
will be analyzed and summarized.
3. People
Think about the people who will
be the participants in your study.
Determine beforehand the
sample size, and corresponding
respondents over group if
applicable.
4. Budget
You need to have a clear budget
for your entire study. Prepare
your Cost Estimates for the
whole research period.

Budget Allocation
5. Timeline
You need to have a clear plan for
the different steps of your
research study. There should be
an attainable and practical
deadline to be met.

Gantt Chart
Activity 2
Analyze your
Research Paradigm.
create a flowchart/
timeline of data
collection procedures
20
Activity 3
Write the description of
the methods that will
be used in your study.
Incorporate them on
your Chapter 3.
Interview on Ethnobotanical Knowledge
Permissions from the Barangay Hall and National Commission on
Indigenous Peoples (NCIP) were sought before the interview with the
Cuyonons and Tagbanua tribe and utilization of the wild plant. A
structured interview guide was created prior to the interview. Questions
regarding the community preparation of Amomosing plant were
constructed in Filipino, English and Cuyonon languages. A Human
Informed Consent form was signed by the participants who were
selected through Purposive Sampling using Tremblay’s key informant
technique[39]. The respondents were asked to describe the community
preparation of Amomosing plant in terms of plant part, disease treated,
mode of preparation, application, and dosage. Written and audio
records of their respective responses were kept with their consent. 22
