MATHEMATICS 9 QUARTER 2 Week 4
Competency:
The learner simplifies expressions with rational exponent (M9AL-IIe-1) and writes
expressions with rational exponents as radicals and vice versa. (M9AL-IIf-1)
To the Learners:
Before starting the module, I want you to set aside other tasks that will disturb you
while enjoying the lessons. Read the simple instructions below to successfully enjoy the
objectives of this kit. Have fun!
1. Read carefully all the contents and follow instructions indicated in every page of this
module.
2. Writing enhances learning. Keep this in mind and take note of the important concepts
on your notebook.
3. Perform all the provided activities in the module.
4. Let your facilitator/guardian assess your answers using the answer key card.
5. Analyze the post-test and apply what you have learned.
6. Enjoy studying!

If n is an even positive integer, and a ≥ 0, then 𝒂𝒏 is the non-negative real number
𝟏
such that (𝒂𝒏 )ⁿ = a.
𝟏
If n is an odd positive integer, and a ≥ 0, then 𝒂𝒏 is the non-negative real number
𝟏
such that (𝒂𝒏 )ⁿ = a.
Example:
a. 251/2 = 5 because 52 = 25.
b. 271/3 = 3 because 33 = 27
c. -1251/3 = -5 because (-5)3 = -125
This definition will help us evaluate numbers raised to rational exponents whose base
is a perfect square or a cube, etc. to compensate with the denominator of the rational
exponent.
Example: Evaluate 82/3
82/3 = (2●2●2)2/3
= [(2●2●2)1/3]2
= 22
=4
Example: Evaluate 813/4
813/4 = [(3●3●3●3)1/4]3
= (3)3
= 27
Example: Evaluate (-27)2/3
(-27)2/3 = [(-3●-3●-3)1/3]2
= (-3)2

DEFINITION OF √𝒃
Previously, we determine the relationship between the concept of rational exponent
and radical (91/2 ● 91/2 = 91/2 + 1/2 = 91 = 9. This means that 91/2 = √𝟗 = 3). In this case,
we can express any real number raised in a rational exponent into its radical form:
𝟏
If n is a positive integer and b is any real number such that 𝒃𝒏 is a real number,
𝟏
𝒏
then 𝒃𝒏 = √𝒃.
Note: If b raised to 1 over n is equal to the nth root of b, then x raised to one half is equal to the square root
of x.
𝟏
Example 1: Express 𝒙𝟐 in its radical form.
𝟏 𝟏
𝒃𝒏 = 𝒙𝟐
𝒏
√𝒃 = √𝒙
In the same way that we can express rational exponent in its radical form, we can use
the same definition in expressing radical expression to rational exponent:

The exponent is a number that tells us how many times the base will be used as a
factor.
