Among the 4 skills ( Reading, writing, listening, speaking), which is you weakest skill and why?
I think I lack in listening and speaking. The reason is quite obvious- there wasn’t much attention paid to
these two skills in matric or FSC. All I used to do was cram the question answers and that’s it.
Do you ever got the chance to work on your listening or speaking skills?
No. I don’t think the syllabus or the teachers teaching English language are trained enough to make the
students work on their listening or speaking skills. The only time when I used to speak in English was
when asking questions from the teacher.
Which is the most focused skill in matriculation English books?
Without any second thoughts, it’s writing. For most of the people, it’s not even writing because they
used to cram the whole 6-7 page long essays. Whereas I took this opportunity to test my creative writing
skills, and did great in essay writing and other such things.
How do you think that matriculation english books can be improved?
I think teaching students is more about the way you are teaching them rather than the book or the
syllabus you are teaching from. I think the books of matriculation english should remain the same while
the teachers need to change their traditional strategies to incorporate the new ones.
Is there anything that you regret not learning about english?
The only thing I regret Is not participating in class due to the fear of mispronouncing an english word. I
wish I could have gathered up the courage to answer those questions from “The Rain”. I remember how
well I was prepared, but chose to keep the answers to myself and didn’t speak.
Do you think the English books of Matriculation gave you the chance to showcase your creative side?
Yes! After reading the chapters I used to guess the answers to the questions and when I was told the
correct answers, I used to make a few changes in those and created the perfect answers to the
questions.
How do you think the short stories of english like “Chinese New Year” and “A World Without Books”
helped you learn the english language better?
I think these stories taught me to use the appropriate expressions, while maintaining the smoothness
and flow in a passage. These stories were quite well written and I learned the importance of a good
introduction and a conclusion through these. I remember not being interested in stories that had bad
introductions or the introductions which were not intriguing enough.
Were you able to write your own story after reading the short stories in your syllabus?
Yes! Those stories taught me the basic things like climax, and character development that are the basic
things of a story. So, I could definitely write a whole new story.
Do you think the things that you learned back then in Matriculation english lessons and books will help
you anywhere in your future?
Yes. Everything has its own significance. Answering questions correctly to the given questions was a big
thing in matric. I was instructed to start with proper sentence and use words that are already in the
question. This helped me in the interview that I gave for undergraduate program. I know this will help
me in one way or another in future as well.
Do you see any difference in olevels and matric english syllabus?
Yes! There is a huge difference. I think they don’t teach english in matriculation, the teachers basically
just dictateD me and I jad to follow the instructions. On the other hand, those students in Levels are
given complete creative freedom to use and learn the language however they want.
