Chapter I
INTRODUCTION
In an educational institution, the students are the main character in the plot, without them,
the school, the teachers, and facilities will be worthless. The topmost priority of educators is the
quality of students' performance in academic standards. Students' motivation to participate in
physical activity on a regular basis has become an important concern of a physical educator.
Previous experiences of students in their PE class may also result in their perception towards the
activity. Physical Education is an important component in child development, and physical
activity directly affects students performance.
As we are all aware that factors are always present /occur in every corner of specific
situation. The fact that factors may serve us, hinder in which it will affect directly. Learning can
be observed differently and is often measured and evaluated. The learning experience of the
students may rely on through experience. As we all know, learning with experience is the best
escape to explore new things. That's why every person should educate themselves from the
things that can create learning. On the other hand, there is huge collection of student
achievements has been associated with participation in a physical activity.
Educating individuals in terms of physical aspect is among basic principles of the modern
education concept. Games as well as activities which are arranged in the form of games and
which prepare the students for future sports activities beginning from the primary school are of
great importance. Most Physical Education lessons contain an introduction that gets the students
warmed up and ready to participate in the lesson. The teacher usually provides an overview of
what the lesson is about and what the students will be doing throughout the lesson. In the same
way, this chapter provides an overview of the research and explains what the research will
involve.
Given the importance of time on task to learning, students should be provided with
frequent physical activity breaks that are developmentally appropriate. Although presently
understudied, physically active lessons offered in the classroom may increase time on task and
attention to task in the classroom setting. Educators, trainers, and researchers have been
exploring factors that contribute to effectively address performance of learners. Many factors can
affect a student's quality of academic achievement, may it be inside or outside the school
premises. These factors may be termed as student factors—family factors, school factors and
peer factors (Crosnoe, Johnson & Elder, 2004). Besides other factors, socioeconomic status is
one of the most researched and debated factors that contribute towards the academic
performance of students.
1
The purpose of this study is to identify the factors affecting students' performance in their
PE class on the 1st semester 2022-2023. This sought to determine the direct relationships
between identified factors (aptitude, and learning facilities) in a student's performance. The study
will contribute towards answering the significant determinants of students' performance that need
to be address. This will also serve as a guide for future physical educators and practitioners for
the improvement in the quality of physical education program. In addition, the results will also
serve as a platform for schools to initiate discussions on the possible causal factors and how the
school may be able to address these problems so that students' performance can be improved.
This study aims to identify the factors affecting student's performance in second year Physical
Education class in Eastern Visayas State University (EVSU-OCC). Specifically, this study aims
to determine:
•Age
•Gender
3. Is there a significant difference between the students' demographic profile and their perception
of aptitude and learning facilities?
2
THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK
According to the Theory of Educational Productivity factors are divided into two parts
the external and internal factors that are affecting students' performance.
3
CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK
The illustration above tackles the dependent variable and independent variable in which it
shows the factors affecting students performance in physical education second year class in
Eastern Visayas State University (EVSU-OCC). The respondents of this study are the second
year students during their 1st semester in physical education class. These factors may have
different effects depending on the students' perception. The researcher's conceptual framework
would be a great help for the respondents in having better understanding of these studies.

DEFINITION OF TERMS
6
CHAPTER II
Many early studies used student-aged adults as subjects. College students appear to value
fitness more than younger students, and they indicated that physical fitness is a major reason for
participating in physical education classes (Avery & Lumpkin, 1987; Blair, 1984; Soudan &
Everett, 1981; Weick, 1975). They are the final link in school physical education and can provide
valuable insight into students' positive and negative perceptions of physical education (Coelho
2000). Socioeconomic factors are one of the major causes of student performance that the
researcher has been investigating. Research studies show that students’ performance depends on
many factors such as learning facilities, gender and age differences, etc. that can affect student
performance (Hansen, Joe B., 2000).
It has been discovered that such a factor has a significant impact on students' academic
performance and that there is a negative relationship between family income and students'
academic performance (Diaz, 2003; Raychauduri et al., 2010; Hijaz and Naqvi 2006). A number
of studies have been conducted to identify the root causes of poor academic performance in a
variety of institutions around the world. The majority of studies concentrate on three intervening
elements: parents (family causal factors), teachers (academic causal factors), and students
(personal causal factors) (Diaz, 2003). Only a few of the many characteristics that influence a
person's behavior help goal attainment in a specific situation. These are referred to as aptitudes.
Aptitude, in particular, refers to the degree of readiness to learn and perform well in a specific
situation or domain (Corno et al., 2002). In fact, intelligence tests, also known as IQ tests, are
measures of general aptitude: the results of these tests represent a composite of cognitive abilities
and can be used to predict achievement and other behavior in a variety of situations. Physical
education aptitude is important among institutions because it is used as part of the admission
process.
The sessions are held in PE classes and include a variety of advanced physical education
sessions covering sports psychology, physiology, and skill acquisition. Meanwhile, Portman
(1995) claims that students' awareness of their low skill level when compared to others leads
some students to believe that success is unattainable. The more students perceived themselves to
be competent in physical education, the more they valued physical education as an important,
interesting, and useful school subject, and the more they perceived autonomy and competence
support from physical education teachers, the more likely they were to exert effort and
concentration in PE (Zhang, Solmon, Gu, 2012). "Thoughts, beliefs, and feelings about people,
situations, and events are examples of student perceptions" (Schunk 1992).
Poor performance influence students future uncertainty about overall outcomes of the
university and can decrease the likelihood of students desiring for higher outcomes such as
higher grade (Egunsola, 2014). Thus, a student's academic performance is definitely a subject in
the spotlight for educators (Wintre et al., 2011; Sæle et al., 2017). According to Nicholls (1989),
students who can distinguish between ability and effort are more likely to believe that effort
7
combined with adequate ability leads to success. Until recently, USMA's intramural program
was an excellent example of a Sports Education Model (Seidontop, 1994). Students must learn
not only how to play, coordinate, and manage sports experiences in this model, but also
individual responsibility and effective group membership skills. Students' performance is
significantly related to their satisfaction with the academic environment and the institution's
facilities such as the library, computer lab, and so on (Karemera 2003). The academic
environment is the most effective variable for students, and it has a positive relationship with the
education and grade level of their fathers (Kirmani & Siddiquah, 2008). It has been demonstrated
that physical elements in the school environment have discernible effects on teachers and
students.
It is widely acknowledged that physical activity improves one's overall capabilities. The
curriculum has a significant impact on college students' perceptions of physical education
(Figley, 1985). In general, a school, as defined by Smith (2000), consists of the provision of
school buildings on a well-located site, along with the facilities and surroundings that allow
students to concentrate and learn. It is a place where complex organization is used to influence
people in terms of social perspective, school management, school organization, and class
allocation, as well as teacher quality/effectiveness.
Many students suggested that physical education teachers "go too far," possibly to the
point where learning in physical education suffers (Coelho, 2000). According to Siedentop
(1983), "tolerance is more likely to lead to better knowledge of the person, better knowledge of
the person's point of view is more likely to lead to acceptance, and acceptance is more likely to
lead to positive interactions". According to Aicinena (1991), the quality of a teacher's personal
interactions with students had the greatest impact on students' attitudes toward physical
education. Figley (1985) discovered that teacher reinforcement, or the lack thereof, was the most
important predictor of college students' attitudes. "Teachers who operate unaware of their
students' perspectives frequently doom students to dull, irrelevant experiences, and even failure"
(Brooks & Brooks, 1993). The factors influencing students' performance in EVSU-OCC to their
performance in physical education class are thoroughly discussed in this research report.
