Lesson 3

The document is a daily lesson log for an 8th grade science class. The lesson focuses on the accessory organs of the digestive system. The objectives are for students to demonstrate understanding of how the digestive system interacts with other body systems and to present an analysis of diseases resulting from nutrient deficiency. Students will learn about the accessory organs, their locations and functions. Learning activities include a word drill, labeling an anatomy chart, discussing the organs and their roles, and identifying digestive system diseases. The teacher will evaluate students' understanding and address any needs for remedial or additional lessons.

Activity Sheet:

Fill Me Up
Procedure
1. Get the cut out pictures of the accessory organs to your teacher
2. Using the anatomy chart of digestive system, locate where the organs can be found.
3. Fill in the table with the information needed. For column 1, write the name of the accessory
organ, for column 2 where it is located in the digestive system and for column 5, write its
functions.
4. Be ready to report in the class the output of the activity.

Analysis:
1. What organ produces bile?
2. Into what accessory organ of digestive system does the bile stored?
3. What are the functions of the pancreas?

Information Sheet

Accessory Organs of the Digestive System Functions

-involved in carbohydrate, fat and protein metabolism

-synthesis of plasma proteins
-synthesis of clotting factors
-detoxification of drugs
-synthesis of Vitamin A
-secretion of bile
-production of heat
-inactivation of hormones
LIVER
-pear-shaped structure beneath the liver
-reservoir for bile
-secretion of mucus into the bile
-water absorption to concentrate the bile

GALL BLADDER

(Both an exocrine and endocrine gland)

-exocrine pancreas functions to produce pancreatic

juice which digests carbohydrates, fats and proteins
-endocrine pancreas functions to produce insulin,
glucagon and somatostatin

PANCREAS

FOOD IS TAKEN BY MOUTH --- TONGUE SENSE THE FOOD AND SENDS SIGNALS
TO THE BRAIN, THE BRAIN PERCEIVES THE TASTE OF THE FOOD --- THE SALIVARY GLANDS
START TO PRODUCE SALIVA --- THE TEETH FURTHER GRIND THE FOOD – THE AMYLASE
PRESENT IN THE SALIVA DIGESTS A PORTION OF THE CARBOHYDRATES OF THE FOOD ---
THE FOOD TRAVELS TO THE ESOPHAGUS BY PERISTALSIS, NO ABSORPTION HAPPENS IN
THE IN THE ESOPHAGUS --- THE FOOD, NOW BOLUS, IS CHURNED, MIXED AND
CHEMICALLY DIGESTED IN THE STOMACH --- THE PEPSIN PRODUCED BY THE STOMACH
DIGESTS THE PROTEIN OF THE BOLUS – AS THE BOLUS TRAVELS --- SOME ADSORPTION
NOW TAKES PLACE IN THE STOMACH--- THE LIVER PRODUCES BILE AND PANCREATIC
ENZYMES NEEDED TO FURTHER DIGESTS BOLUS--- AS THE BOLUS TRAVELS TO THE
INTESTINE IT IS EXPOSED TO THE BILE AND PANCREATIC ENZYMES AT THE DUODENUM---
FAT DIGESTION OCCURS WHEN THE BILE IS PRESENT ---MOST ABSORPTION TAKES PLACE IN
THE SECOND PART OF THE SMALL INTESTINE--- THE JEJENUM --- BOLUS FURTHER TRAVELS
DOWN TO THE LARGE INTESTINE--- WATER AND OTHER MINERAL ARE STILL ABSORBED BY
THE LARGE INTESTINE--- BY THE TIME BOLUS REACHES THE SIGMOID COLON MOST OF ITS
MINERALS AND ACONTENTS ARE ABSORBED ALREADY--- THE UNDIGESTED BOLUS IS NOW
SECRETED AS FECES THROUGH THE ANUS.
