Lesson Use Personal Pronouns in
3 Sentences
Pronouns are words that can be used to take the place of a
noun. There are different kinds of pronouns, but, in this lesson,
we are going to look specifically to personal pronouns and learn
how useful they are in our everyday speaking and writing
activities.

What’s In

In your previous lesson, you have learned Kinds of Nouns –

Mass Nouns and Count Nouns, Possessive Nouns, Collective
nouns. With nouns, sentences are given more clarity as listeners
would know what is the object or thing and what is happening to
that object or thing in relation to the verb which is exerting an
action.

So now you are ready to move on in using personal

pronouns in sentences. Let's see how we can use personal
pronouns to add interest to our writing.

Notes to the Teacher

This contains helpful tips or strategies that will help
you in guiding the learners.

8
What’s New

Do you have a name? What do you think is the importance of

having names? Of course, everyone wants to be called by his or
her own name. There’s nothing sweeter than hearing one’s name
being called. Now let’s find out how Datu introduced himself in
front of the class.

My name is Datu. I like reading. Reading

helps me know a lot of good things. I also
enjoy drawing. It makes me feel relaxed.

My father’s name is Abdullah he is a

habal-habal driver and my mother’s
name is Sittie. She is a business woman.
We have a small business in our house. It
is a Sari-sari store. My parents worked
hard for our family because they love us
very much.

I have two pet cats at home. Their

names are Dhabz and Mr. Kags. They
are my cats. The cats are mine. My
Kaka has a chicken. Its name is
Kuroko. It is hers. My Ali has a pet
goat. Its name is KamKam. It is his.
Mother and Father have birds. They
have seven colorful birds. It is theirs.
We have many pets. It is ours.

9

Did you enjoy reading Datu’s introduction of himself? Awesome!

This time let’s continue our learning.

selection and circle the words that replaced the nouns.
7. What do you call these words?
_____________________________

It is good that you remember important details from Datu’s

dialogue.

2
Now, imagine that you are Datu, and you introduce yourself in
front of the class like this:

My name is Datu. Datu likes reading. Reading helps Datu to

know a lot of good things. Datu also enjoys drawing. Drawing
makes Datu feel relaxed.

Wouldn’t it seem strange to speak of yourself like that. Now read

the sentences below and find out the difference.

My name is Datu, I like reading. Reading helps me to know a

lot of good things. I also enjoy drawing. It makes me feel
relaxed.

In the sentences above, the word Datu is replaced with the words
I and me. When you talked about a person, place, thing or idea
you do not have to use the same words over and over again. The
words I and me are used to refer to a person. They are called
Personal Pronoun.

PERSONAL PRONOUNS are words used in place of nouns in

sentences
The following are personal pronouns
Singular I, me, he, she, it, him, her, you
Plural you, we, they, them, us
Remember the following guidelines in using the pronouns
1. When you talk about yourself, use I or me.
2. To show you own something, use my, mine.
3. When you talk directly to a person or group of persons, use
you.
4. When you talk about others and yourself, use we or us.
5. To show that one or more persons and yourself own
something, use our or ours.
6. When you talk directly to one or more persons, use you.
7. When you talk about a girl or a woman, use she.
8. When you talk about a boy or a man, use he.
9. When you talk about a thing, a place, an idea or an animal,
use it.
10. When you talk about two or more persons, places, or
things, use they. To show they own something, use their or
theirs.
11. 3
EXERCISE 2: Replace the underlined words with personal
pronouns. Write your answer on the space
provided before the number.

__________1. My sister Carla and brother Ben walk to school

everyday.
__________2. Carla carries a blue backpack.
__________3. The backpack has flower prints on it.
__________4. Ben has a trolly bag that Ben pills around.
__________5. Carla and Ben are never late.

Good Job! You have already learned how to use personal

pronouns. This time, let us learn how personal pronouns agree
with their antecedents in number and gender.
Read the following sentences.

1. My father’s name is Abdullah, he is a habal-habal driver.

2. My mother’s name is Sittie. She is a business woman.
3. We have a small business in our house. It is a Sari-sari
store.

To what word does the pronoun he refer? To what word does the
pronoun she refer? To what word does the pronoun it refer?

My father’s name is Abdullah, he is a habal-habal driver.

The pronoun he refers to Abdullah, Datu’s father.

My mother’s name is Sittie. She is a business woman.

The pronoun she refers to Sittie, Datu’s mother.

We have a small business in our house. It is a Sari-sari store.

The pronoun it refers to the small business.

The words Abdullah, Sittie and the small business are nouns.
They are the antecedents of the pronouns he, she and it
respectively.

4
ANTECEDENTS are nouns that are replaced by pronouns in
sentences
Personal pronouns should agree with their antecedents in
number and gender:
Pronoun Antecedent
He Boy or man
She Girl or woman
It An object or animal
They More than one person, object
or animal
Example:

Ana is joining us. She is Eva’s older sister.

antecedent pronoun

EXERCISE 3: Let’s do this exercise! Fill in the blanks with a

pronoun that will agree with the antecedents to
complete the idea of the sentence.
Like people, animals have homes. (He, She They)
1.__________ live in special places where (he, it, they) 2.__________
can be safe. These homes are close to where (she, it, they)
3.__________ get food. A mother bird lives on a nest where (she,
he, it) 4. __________ keeps her babies while father bird searches
for food. A spider spins a web for home. (It, she, they)
5.__________ traps food in this web, too.

Excellent! It is good that you were able to determine the personal

pronouns that should agree with their antecedents in number
and gender. This time let us know about possessive pronoun.

5
Read the following sentences

My Kaka has a chicken. It is hers.

My Ali has a pet goat. It is his.
Mother and Father have birds. It is
theirs.

What belongs to Kaka? My Kaka has a chicken. It is hers.

Which word in the second

sentence shows that Kaka
is the owner of the chicken? My Kaka has a chicken. It is hers.

The word hers shows ownership. It is a possessive pronoun.

POSSESSIVE PRONOUN shows ownership. They also help to

make a sentence shorter.
Singular (mine, yours, its, his, hers)
Plural (ours, yours, theirs)
EXAMPLE:
I have a bicycle. The bicycle is mine.
You have a bicycle. The bicycle is yours.
He has a bicycle. The bicycle is his.
