1.0 SCOPE
1.1 This specification pertains to seamless steel tubular products that have a minimum yield strength of 80
ksi and meet the requirements of API 5CT Grade L80 Type 1 or this specification. This material is
listed in NACE MR0175 and exhibits good resistance to cracking in sour (H2S) containing
environments. When there is an apparent conflict or difference between this specification and a
referenced specification, this specification shall govern.
1.2 API 5CT covers oil country tubular goods (OCTG) such as tubing, casing and coupling stock. When
the wall thickness gets to be greater than that typically found in coupling stock, usually in the 1” (2.5
cm) range, then this specification may not be applicable. When bored bar or heavy wall mechanical
tube are used for to make L80 equivalent products for heavier wall products and API 5CT is not a
specific requirement (such as with Liner Hanger products), an acceptable alternative specification is
Weatherford WS-410. Note that there may be additional Supplemental requirements that need to be
evaluated; for example, Liner hanger products will also include at least the addition of WS-410
Supplement 2 (S2) at 14°F (-10°C) or lower but with a higher impact energy value; the minimum
average impact energy is 30 ft-lbs (41 joules) with no single test result less than 24 ft-lbs (33) joules.
1.3 When required by Purchase Order or Engineering Document, there are Supplemental Requirements that
are applicable and defined herein. A suffix attached to this specification (such as WS-302-S1S2) adds
the contents of the supplements listed to the specification requirements. Tubular products that are
required to meet cold weather impact requirements or impact tested in accordance with API 5CT shall
be tested in accordance with the relevant Supplemental Requirements. Tubular products that are
required to meet surface inspection requirements of API 5CT shall be tested in accordance with the
relevant Supplemental Requirements. Tubular product requiring compliance with API 5CT Grade L80
Type 1 in its entirety is specified when Supplement 22 is required. Supplement 26 is required for
tubular product to meet API 5CT Grades L80 Type 1 PSL-2. Supplement 60 is required for tubular
product to meet API 5CT Grades L80 Type 1 PSL-3.
1.4 Seamless casing, tubing, and coupling stock that meets the requirements of API 5CT Grade L80 Type 1
meet the requirements of this specification. The tube dimensions shall be in accordance with the
Engineering Drawing or Purchase Order. Unless specified, all ends are to be plain end.
