Loxone Vs KNX

Loxone and KNX are automation and control systems, with the following key differences: - Loxone uses a centralised processor while KNX can operate without one; centralization allows for easier configuration and troubleshooting with Loxone. - Loxone uses its own proprietary protocol while KNX uses an open protocol, but Loxone's protocol is faster. - Loxone manufactures its own hardware to strict standards while KNX works with devices from various manufacturers of varying quality.

LOXONE vs KNX

As a Loxone and KNX installer, we have highlighted the key differences with both solutions
to help you make an informed decision when it comes to your automation/control system.
We can provide either solution, or a hybrid of both, depending on your project needs.

Centralised Control
With centralised control, a single processor is responsible for all actions performed in your system. Inputs from switches and
sensors are sent to the processor, and then depending on the setup, gives instructions to the relevant output devices. Without
a centralised system, messages are sent directly from the input devices to the outputs.
YES NO
Whilst having a central processor means there is a single point of failure, the Loxone Miniserver is designed to be robust,
reliable and has several safeguards. The advantage is having a single point for configuration, monitoring and troubleshooting,
which gives incredible flexibility. Support and configuration changes with Loxone can be done remotely, whereas KNX has
many limitiations in this repect. Also, with Loxone, the user can make many changes or additional configurations themselves
via the mobile app.

Open Protocol
NO
The ‘protocol’ is the language between the devices to communicate. KNX is open, meaning it’s available for manufactures to YES
use within their own devices based on a common language however they feel. The details of the KNX protocol are controlled KNX INTEGRATION AVAILABLE VIA
by a council of the biggest manufactures. Loxone has its own proprietary languages, designed in-house and are five times AN EXTENSION MODULE
faster than KNX. Faster communication gives a more reliable and an efficient response from your system.

Brand Specific
As various manufactures have adopted the KNX protocol on their devices, there are many options available in the market.
YES
Whilst compliance with the protocol is required for use of the KNX name, not all devices are officially certified and the quality
of the hardware aren’t governed. NO
KNX PRODUCTS FEASIBLE
VIA KNX EXTENSION MODULE
Loxone manufactures its own hardware to very strict standards, and have licensed their protocols to a very select few
companies to use within their products. Importantly, Loxone also has a KNX Extension, which allow using KNX devices within
your installation, giving you the best of both worlds.

Graphical User Interface / Mobile App

The Miniserver includes, as standard, a visualisation tool for a graphical interface and a free mobile app to control everything

in your property in one app. It’s a dynamically created interfaced generated from everything on your system.
SUBJECT TO A SUITABLE
KNX solutions require a visualisation server to provide this functionality and on some occasions two, one for a visualisation INCLUDED AS STANDARD

on a touch screen device inside the property and another for mobile apps. These systems need separate configuration and
customisation in addition to the normal system setup, taking more time to complete the setup, and some system changes
maybe overlooked in error.

BacNET Support YES

YES
BacNET is another key open protocol in the automation industry, very common for large building control systems and HVAC.
SUBJECT TO A SUITABLE
Loxone has BacNET IP built inside, enabling this communication natively with other key systems. Again, KNX requires an INCLUDED AS STANDARD

additional device, setup and configuration.
