Statistical Mechanics -2 Assignment Question: Module -2

Model Questions: Statistical Mechanics

Statistical Mechanics Model Questions:
1. What do you mean by μ-space and Γ-space? Consider a one-dimensional harmonic
p2 1
oscillator of mass m whose total energy is E   m 2 x 2 . Find the volume in
2m 2
the phase space of the oscillator with the restriction that the energy lies between U
and U+dU.
2. What do you mean by Macrostate and Microstate? –Explain with suitable
example. Consider a system of four distinguishable particles, each with spin ½, at rest
in a magnetic field of intensity B. Each particle has an energy +μB (for ms=1/2) or –
μB (for ms= -1/2), where μ is a constant. Calculate the number of microstates if the
total energy of the system is (a) -4μB, (b) -3μB, (c) -2μB, (d) –μB, (e) 0, (f) +μB, (g)
+2μB, (h) +3μB, and (i) +4μB. Here, a microstate of the system can be specified in
terms of the spin state of each particle.
3. Consider a system of N distinguishable particles, each with spin ½, at rest in a
magnetic field of intensity B. Each particle has an energy +μB (for ms=1/2) or – μB
(for ms= -1/2), where μ is a constant. If n is the number of particles in the spin up
state, (a) find the energy of the system, (b) Calculate the number of microstates in the
system.
4. What do you mean by thermodynamic probability? How the entropy is related
with thermodynamic probability?
5. (a) Derive the expression for the density of states between the energy range E
and E+dE. Find quantum mechanically the number of microstates for a one-
dimensional simple harmonic oscillator having an energy between E and E+dE
(dE»ħω).
6. (a) Write down the comparative statement of MB, BE and FD statistics. What do
you mean by Boson and Fermion? Give two examples for each. (b) State Pauli’s
Exclusion Principle.
7. Explain the criteria for the applicability of Bose-Einstein statistics.
8. What do you mean by symmetric and anti-symmetric wave function? How does F-D
statistics differs from B-E statistics?
9. Consider a system of two noninteracting identical particles of mass m confined in a
two-dimensional square box of side L. Find the wave function of the ground state of
the system when the particles are (a) fermion, (b) bosons.
10. Four particles are to be distributed amongst five energy states a, b, c, d, and e.
Enumerate all the possible ways for such a distribution if the particles are (a) fermion,
(b) bosons, and (c) classical particles.
11. Consider two-particle system with 3-states a, b, and c. What are the possible states of
the system when the particles are (a) bosons? (b) fermion? and (c) classical? Also
calculate the probability of finding two particles in the given states.
12. 3-distinguishable particles each of which can be in one of the E, 2E, 3E and 4E
energy states have total energy 6E. Find all possible number of distributions of all
particles in the energy states. Find the number of microstates in each case.
13. Explain the classical limit of Quantum Statistics.
14. Show that the Maxwell-Boltzmann energy distribution law is a limiting case of
the Bose-Einstein and Fermi-Dirac distribution, and show that the M-B
distribution is applicable in rarefied gases.
